ed  by  the  Clirectors  of  the  M.  A.  C.  Associa 
tion.

CONSULTING  AGRICULTURALIST . 

A  SURE  COMER. 

In the  western portion  of  MichiO"an  where 
conditions  naturally  dictate  a  t~ld~ncv  to 
progressive. agriculture,  young men  are I) lay 
lI1g  a  noticeable  part.  The  necessity  of 
adopting  Improvements  and  keeping  abreast 
of  the  procession  has  forced  the  older  and 
more  cons€I'Yative  men  into  the  background, 
and  the  day  of the  you ng  man  has  become a 
reality  in stead  of  a  subject  fo r  commence 
ment  orators. 

Not  the  least  prominent  among  the  youn g 
men  whose names  are part of the rapid  agri 
cultural  progress  of  northwestern  Michigan 
is  E.  H.  Brown,  of  Benzonia,  a  member  of 
the  class  of  1911 .  One  of  the  many  titles 
which might j ustly be conferred  upon  him  is 
t hat  of  Consulting  Agricu lturalist,  for  a 
large part of hi s  work  is  advising  the people 
who  want to  know  and  showing them  how, 

Brown started  out  somewhat  as  a  pioneer 
directly  after  he  was  graduated.  Traverse 
City  High  School  was  one  of  the  first  to  in 
stall  a  course in  agriculture,  and  Brown  was 
t he  first  teacher.  At  the  present  time  he  is 
doing  lecture  and  demonstration  work  in 
western  lVIichigan,  and  helping  the  bankers 
who  wish  to  put  on  agricultul'al  exhibitions 
by  taking  charge  and  answering  the  man y 
questions  asked  by  visitors.  He  really  is 
consulting agriculturalist for  two  banks.  He 
also  visits  upon  request,  the  men  who  wish 
their  orchards  inspected  by  a  scienti st,  and 
~ho welcome  suggestions 
tending  toward 
bigger and better cr ops. 

In  his  spare  time  h~ lectures  to  Granges 
and  schools.  One  of  hI S most  popular  talks 
is  "Reasons  for  Remaining  in  Michigan," 
and  is  illustrated  with  lantern  slides.  The 
place of the meeting 01'  the organization  gi,-  
ing it  matter not at all,  if  he is  only  allowed 
to  preach  the  gospel  of  development. 

His  work  is  almost  identical  with  that  of 
a  federal  county  agent,  except  that  he  cov 
el'S  severa1  counties  and  gets  hi s  financial 
return  from  the  organ izations  and  institu 
tions  directly  profiting  by  his  labors,  rather 
t han  from  the  public  coffers.

Unless  all  indication s  fail  utterly  the re  is 
one  member  of  the  class  of  1913  ~\"ho  bids 
fair  to  be  heard  f rom  within  the  next  few 
years.  Word  has  recentl y  come  to  the  Col 
lege  regarding  th e  rutur~ of  Lee  M.  Hutch 
ins,  who  was  graduated  in  the  3 crri cultul'al 
course  last  Jun e,  and  who  has  s ince  been 
connected with the Eureau of  Plant Industry 
at Washington,  D.  C. 
.  Mr.  Hutchins,  though  in  college  the  f ull . 
i Ollr  years,  probably  had  more  extra  credits 
at  the  t ime  of  hi s  graduation  than  any  s tu 
de nt  of  recent  ,vee-us_  As ide  from  thi s  he 
found  time  t o  take  an  acti ve  part  in  ,n'an y 
little 
phases  of  stu dent 
recogmtlOn  on  account o f  hi s  mus ical  ability.

Th e same t raits  applied in  the O'overnment 
servI ce  attracted  the  attention  of  hi s  s uper 
iors,  with  the  result  that  in  a short  time Lee 
M.  Hutchins  will  eats r  Harvard.  During 
the  first  two  years  he  will  be  allowed  $600 
per  y ear  for  expenses.  and  the  third  year  he 
will  tra ve l  in  Europe,  ydth  an  expense  ac 
count  of  $1 ,000.  Hi s  time  will  be  spent  in 
the study of condition s affecting plant breed 
ing,  and  upon  the  completion  o f  his  studies 
he will  again  enter the  servi ce  of th e  depart 
ment  at  Washington. 

Hutchins'  preferment  is  t he  well -deser ved 
reward  of  several  years  of  hard  work  and 
persistent  applicati on.  His  many  fri ends 
will  r ej oice  in  t he  s plenclid  future  whi cll  is 
opening  up  to  him. 

G.  W.  Hebble\\-hite,  '06,  formerly  livino- at 
6037  Kimual'k  Ave.,  Chicago,  has  moved  to 
732  Adams  AYe.,  Evansville,  Jnd.,  where  he 
has  a position  as  chief drafts man  for  the  111 -
te mational  Steel  &  Iron  Construction  Co.

P HILIPPINE  TEACHERS  WANTED . 

A circular  has  been sent out by  the Bureau 
of Insular Affai r s at Washington, which may 
interest some  of  the  M.  A .  C.  people  receiv 
ing  THE  RECORD.  It has  to  do  with  the  ap 
proaching  eXaIninations  which  will  be  held 
to  select  teache rs  for  Philippine  service. 

Ma rch  11  and  12  are the dates given.  The 
positions  which  will  be  open  are supervisors 
teachers  of  English, 
of  school  districts, 
mathematics,  history,  science,  manual  train 
ing,  and  agriculture  fo r  men,  and  domestic 
science  and  home  economics  for  women. 

"For  the  rigllt  kind  of  men  there  are  ex 
cellent  opportunities  to  take  a  large  part  in 
the  solution  of  some  of  the  problems  now 
confronting  this  country,  and  at  the  same 
time  O'ain  experience  and  training  of  great 
value:'  The  entrance  salary  fo r  men  is 
$1,200  pear  year,  expenses  to  the  Islands  to 
be  paid  by  the  government,  wlth  ehglbJ!lty 
for  promotion  up  t o  $2,000  as  teachers  and 
$3,000  as  superintendents .

Prof.  S.  F.  Edwards,  '99a,  formerly  a 
member  of  the  local  faculty,  and  at  present 
professor of  bacteriology  at the Ontario  Ag 
ricultural  College,  renewed  h, S subscnptlOn, 
and says:  " I  feel  I  cannot  afford  to  miss  a 
si ngle copy of the RECORD." 

THE  PHILIPPINE  CONSTABULARY. 

H.  M.  Ward,  'I 3e,  who holds  a  commission 
as  third  lieutenant  ill  the  Philippine  con  
stabulary,  has  written  to  Dean  Bissell,  and 
has  something  to  say  regarding  what  he  is 
doing.  The  interesting  part  of  hi s  letter  is 
as follows: 

"The constabulary is offering com rnissions 
to graduates of M. A.  C.  and  similar colleges 
as third  lieutenants,  in  what  might be  ter m 
ed the armed civil  police force of the Islands. 
The organization  is  sem i-military  in  charac 
ter,  but,  in  addition  to  its  military  r outine, 
per fo rms  a  great deal  of political work,  with 
the  ultimate  aim  of  bringing  all  classes  of 
people  to  realize  the  power  of  the  United 
~tates to  ed ucate  and  uplift  the  people.  To 
do this the constabulary  officer must get  into 
close  touch  with  the  people  and  their  cus 
toms  in  a  way  not done  by  any other  bureau 
in  the  Islands .  The officer's  main  duty  is  to 
make  friends  with  the  people. 

"The salary for grades of third and  second 
lieutenants  is $1,200  pel' yea r,  the  next posi  
tion  in  t he  scale  pays  $1,500  per yea r,  with 
an  extra  increase  of  ten  per  cent.  fot'  each 
five  years  of  service.  Thirty  days  leave  on 
full  pay  are  granted  each  year." 

Ward reports that he likes the serv ice,  and 
recommends  it  as  a  good  way  to  see  the 
world  befol'e  settling down.  but also  says  he 
does  not  expect  to  remain  longer  than  his 
contract  period. 

HORT.  CLUB. 

The  fi rst  meeting  of  the  Hort.  Club  was 
featured  by  all  address  by  Hon.  R.  D. 
Graham,  of  Grand  Rapids.  Mr.  Graham, 
who  was  attending  the  regular  meeting  of 
the  State  Board,  consented  to  sandwich  a 
short  talk  between  the  Board  meeting and  a 
banquet. 

I n  an  interesting  manner h e  compared the 
horticultural  adyantages  and  disadvantages 
of  M_ich igan  and  Texas,  havi ng  had  experi 
ence  with  both. 
] n  hi s  opinion,  1\1ichigan 
has  the  best  of  it,  horti culturally,  although 
Texas  is  very  desirable  for  many  kinds  of 
farming. 

H.  B .  Crane,  '14  Hort .,  gave  the  men  a 
talk  on  exper iences  gained  in  orchard  l'eno 
"ating  during  vacat ioll.  P.  R.  Taylor ,  '15, 
described  his  visit  to  a  chestnut  orchard  in 
the  Blue  Ridge  Mountains.  This  orchard, 
said to be  the largest  of its kind  in t he  coun 
t ry,  is  becoming  extinct,  due to  a  variety  0'( 
causes. 

The customary " H ort."  reed  of apples was 
handed  out  just  before  the  meeting  ad-
journed.

ASSOCIATION  CONSTITUTION  OF  1869. 

ARTICLE  I. 
This  Association  shall  be  known  as  t he  So 
ciety  of  the  Alumni  of  the  Michigan  Agri 
cultural  College. 

ARTICLE  II. 
The  objects  of  the Society  shall  be  to  con 
tin ue  and  strengthen  the  mutual  friend ship 
of t he  Alumni;  and  to enable  them to confer 
as  to  the  best  measures  to  promote  the  use 
fulness  of OUT  Alma  Mater. 

ARTlCLE  III . 

The  members  of  the  Society  shall  consist 
of  t he  Alumni  of  the  College,  and  the  mem 
bers  of the graduating class. 

ARTlCLE  IV. 

The  Society  shall  hold  triennial  meetings 
at  the  College,  at  the  same  time  or  duri ng 
the  same  week  as  the  regu lar  Commence 
ment. 

ARTICLE  V. 

The omcers of thi s  Society shall  consist of 
a  President,  three  Vi ce-Presidents.,  a  Secre 
tary-Treasurer, an Orator, Alternate Orator,

Dr.  W.  J.  Beal  has  forwarded  some  of  his 
usual  timely  r emarks  to  the  RECORD,  along 
with  a  letter  f rom  C.  J.  Strang,  '78.  Mr. 
Strang's  letter  is  too  long  to  permit  of  pub 
lishing  here. 
It tells  of  his  work  at  J o 
hannesburg,  Mich.,  where  he  is  teaching 
school,  as  well  as m inistering to the spiritual 
needs of a  small  parish.  He enjoys his work, 
a nd  has  the , added  encouragement  which 
comes  from  a  community  where  a  good 
spirit  of  fellowship  prevails. 

AMENDMENTS  TO  THE  CONSTITUTION 
ADOPTED  AT  THE  TRIENNIAL 
REUNION,  JUNE  25,  1913. 

The  executive  omcers  of  the  Association 
are  hereby  directed  to  prepare a  new  set  of 
By-laws,  to  print same  in the  M.  A.  C.  REC 
ORD,  and to conduct a  mail  vote  upon  the  By 
laws . 

Shou ld  the  votes  upon  the  By-laws  com 
prise  a  majority of  the tota l  votes  cast,  said 
Constitution  and  By-laws  shall  be  adopted 
and t he executive omcer s  shall  t hereupon  in 
corporate this  Association  under the  laws  of 
th e State of Mich igan. 

It  was  moved  and  seconded  that  the  offi 
cer s  of the  Association  be:  President,  Vice 
Presi dent  and  Treasurer. 

There  should  also  be  an  executi ve  boa rd, 
composed  of  one  member,  duly  elected  by 
each  of  the  recognized  local  M.  A.  C.  Asso 
ciations;  three  members,  elected  at large,  by 
members  of  the  parent  Association  who  do 
not  belong  to  local  Association,  who,  to 
gether  with  the  elective  executi ve  omcers  of 
the  pm'ent  Association,  shall  comprise  the 
executive  board. 

The  executive  board  is  hereby  authorized 
to  accept  from  the  State  Board  of  Agricul 
t ure  a  publication  known  as  the  M.  A,  C. 
RECORD,  provided  such  acceptance  does  not 
entail  expense or  liabi lity to  the  Association, 
and  provided  t hat the  State  Board  of  Agri 
culture  agrees  to  pay  to  the  Association  not 
less  t han  $50  per  month  to  partially  defray 
the  cost  of  publ ish ing  the  said  RECORD,  and 
does,  furthermore,  provide  the  Association 
with  suitable  omce space  with  the  usual  ap 
peltenances  and  without  cost  to  said  Asso 
ciation. 

The executive boa rd shall e mploy  a  perma 
nent  paid  secretary  who  shan  be  an  al umnus 
or  alum nae of t he  College,  and  who shall  edit 
t he  said  M.  A.  C.  RECORD  and  fulfill  any 
other  duties  required  of  this  omce  by  the 
executive  board  or t he  Constitution . 

The  By-laws  shall  be  so  drawn  as  to  per

Mich"  suggests  a  s light  ch ange  in  the  plan 
of annual  reunions as contained  in  this isstle, 
The  al teration  is  as  follo\\'s: 

In  1914,  '05  and  '06  a re  left  out;  in  the 
1917  column,  '04,  '03,  '02  and  '01  are  added; 
in  1918,  '97  to  '00  are  added,  and  in  1921, 
'94  is  left out,  and  '98  added. 

She  gives  as  her  reason  for  the  change 
that  the  plan  2.s  incorporated  in  the By-laws 
appears  to  lea"e  the  oldest  class  each  time 
cut off  from  comparatively all  of its fri ends, 
and  adds  that she  prefers  the  old  Triennials 
to  the  plan as  it  now stands. 

The  RECORD will  make no  comment  on  the 
subject at this  time.  We  prefer to have  the 
comment  come  from  outside,  and  from  the 
older  members  who  will  naturally  be  the 
ones  most  affecte d  by  any  change  in  plans 
as  differing  f rom  the  Triennials.  A  later 
issue  will  contain  stich  comment as  is  receiv 
ed,  together  with  our  own  opinions  in  the 
matter.

RECORD.  Things  are  marching  forward  so 
rapidl y  and  so  well  that  it  is  my  desire  to 
get  the  report of  each  step  as  it  is  taken.

HEIMAN  HUGH  COPLAN,  '12e. 

Heiman  Hugh  Coplan,  of Traverse  City,  a 
member  of  t he  class  of  1912,  died  Tuesday, 
J anuary  13,  1914,  at  J anes,-ille,  Wisconsi n. 
Pleurisy  was  the  cause,  Mr.  Coplan  having 
been ill  for  sever al  weeks. 

OrigniaIIy with the class of 1911,  Mr.  Cop 
lan  was  graduated  with  t he  class  of  1912, 
and  entered  t he  public  school s  of  J anesville 
as  a  teacher  of  manual  training.  While  in 
college  he  was  prominent  in  many  lines  of 
student  activity.  and  was  well  known  and 
popular.  He  was  a  member of the  AUl"orean 
society.

III.,  June 27,  1912.  He was ever a  loyal  sup 
porter of M.  A.  C.,  and  was a  great admixer 
of Dr.  Beal.  In  his  medical  practice he used 
the  chemistry  and  botany  studied  at  M.  A. 
C.  continually.

FARMER'S  CLUB 

The Farmers'  Club began  the winter  cam 
paign with a  rousing meeting,  more than 200 
being  present,  including  a  large  number  of 
short  COUl'se  men. 

Dr.  Giltne r,  of  the  department  of  bac 
teriology,  and  H.  H.  Musselman,  of  the  de 
partment of farm mechanics, were slated for 
a  dual  address .  The  former  spoke  on  the 
"Propel' Storage and  Care  of Farm Manure" 
from  the standpoint of bacterial acti vity and 
the  health  of  surrounding  people  and 
animals,  while 
t he 
mechanics  of  the  proposition  in  an  interest 
ing  manner.  Not  much  was  said  regarding 
the fi nancial  aspects of the  matter,  that sub 
ject  being  left  fo r  a  future  meeting,  when 
r epresentatives  from  some  of  the  other  de 
paltments  will  be  present.  A  generous  feed 
of  apples  closed  the  meeting.

GOOD  ATTENDANCE  MARKS  ANNUAL 
BREEDERS'  MEETING . 

Michigan  feeders  and  breeders  of  fine 
stock assembled  in large numbers  at the Col 
lege last  week,  the  occ.asion  being the  annual 
meeting  of  the  Mi chigan  Breeders'  Associa 
tion.  These  men,  combined  with  the  large 
attendance  at  the  engineering  meeting  and 
t he  usual  numbet'  of  short  course  students, 
gave  the  campus  a  well-populated  appear 
ance. 

The  delegates  li stened  to  a  number  of 
well-prepared talks  on  topics of li ve interest, 
and  on  Wednesday evening witnessed a prac 
tical  demon stration  in  butchering.

MICHIGAN  ENGINEERS  MEETING  HELD 
AT  COLLEGE. 

The  thirty-fift h  annual  meeting  of  the 
Michigan  Engineering  Society  was  held  at 
M.  A.  C.  on Tuesday,  Wednesday and Thurs 
day  of last  week.  A la rge  n um ber of engin 
eering  men  from  all  parts  of  the  state  was 
present,  and  enj oyed  an  interesting  and  up 
to-date  program. 

Among  the  s ubject s  treated  during  the 
meetings  were,  "Industrial  Compensation 
Laws,"  HSewage  Disposa1."  a  number  of pa 
pers  on  highway  construction,  and  discus 
s ions  relati ve  to  land  s Ul' veying.  Lawton  T . 
Hemans,  of  Mason ,  deli vered  an  address  on 
" The  Valua tion  of  P ublic  U t ilities." 

A  number  of  Lansing's  leading  factories 
were  inspected  by the visitors,  who  also took 
a  li ve  inte rest  in  the  growth  of  the  college. 
Many  of  the  junior  and  senior  eng ineers 
took  advantage  of  t he  meetings  to  add  to 
their  own  store  of  info rmation.

1914  SEASON. 

FOOTBALL  SCHEDULE  FOR  COMING 
SEASON  NOW  SETTLED. 

By  trouncing  the  Buckeyes,  of  Toledo, 
f ormerly  the Overlands,  the !v!. A.  C.  basket 
ball  tossers  openEd  the  local  basketball  sea 
son  in  a  ma nne.r  most  pleasing  to  the  cl'ovlcl 
which  packed  the  College  Armory  last  Fri 
day  nigh t .  The fin al  scor e  was  40  to  24. 

While  t here  had  been  a  little  doubt  ex 
pressed  as  to  the  exact  caliber  of  the  team 
Wllich was to  r epr esent M.  A.  C.  this winter, 
all such  feeling vanished  in  view of the speed 
and  consist ency  of  tEam  work  displayed  by 
the  college  five.  Hewitt  Miller,  of  football 
fame,  and  "Bob"  Goss,  the  relia ble  guard. 
showed  midseason  form,  and  rung  up  fixe 
a nd  six  field  goals,  respecti\'ely.  Gauthier 
and  HDutch"  Miller  also  were  much  in  €Y1-
dence,  while the work of Frimodig, at center, 
was  excellent for  a  man  in  his  first  'varsit y 
game. 
The 

\lisitors  were  considerably  handi 
capped by the  low  girders,  but M.  A.  C.  com 
pletely  outclassed  them  in  speed  and  floor 
work,  and  the  victory  rested  \vhe1'e  it be 
longed .  Four  substitutes  were  used  in  the 
second half,  and  showed  up  well.  The  team 
leaves  Wednesday  for  a  three-game  series, 
when  Lake  Forest ,  l'\orthwestEl'n  College, 
and  Notre Dame  will  be met.  The attention 
of  Chicago  alumni  is  called  to  the  first  t\l'O 
games.

The  new  overcoats  which  have  been  pur 
chased  by  the  band  arrived  just  b efore 
Christmas.  Most of the men  were sufficient 
ly  proud  of  the  coats  to  take  advantage  of 
every  opportunity  to  displa y 
t hem  to  the 
gaze  of  admiring  students.  The  coat s  a re 
dark  blue,  with  large  collars,  f ull  military 
cut , and trimmed with black braid.  We don't 
blame  the  boys  for  being  proud. 

Coach Macklin  return ed to t he College last 
week,  and  at once set abo ut  closing the  foot 
ball  dates  for  1914.  An  excellent  schedule 
has  been  prepared,  the  only  weak ness  of 
which  lies  in  the fact  that a  rat her  sl im  bill 
of  fare  has  been  provided  fo r  t he  stay-at 
home fans , while the games away f r om  home 
are at such  a  distance as  to preclude the pos 
sibility  of  many  roote rs  follow ing the  team, 
as was done last fall. 

Gi\'en  a  team  of  the  same  quality  as  last

M.  A.  C.  will  pro\'e  to  the  sporting  world 
that  she  is  at the  top  to  stay_  One  success 
ful  season  does  not  lnake  a  team  nor  a  l'€C  
mod.  but  if the  " Aggies"  can  come  through 
the  schedule  now  prepa red  in  a  creditable 
manner,  t he  most  severe  critic  cannot  but 
gh-e  cl'edit  where  it belongs. 

Blacklock,  sturdy  right  hair,  has  been  out 
of  school  since  his  Jather's  death  last  term, 
but  footba ll  stock  received  a  boost  when  it 
\l'as  iea l'lled  toda:;  that  he  intends  to  retul'll 
to  college  next  fall,  or even  sooner.

HE  MAKES  THE  FARM  PAY . 

The  RECORD  was  recently  in  receipt  of  a 
letter from  Frank R. Smith,  '87a,  who, as he 
says,  is  t'one  of  M.  A.  C:s  graduates  who 
took  to  the  farm."  He  adds  that  there  "is 
no  M.  A.,  LL.  D.,  0 1'  DD.  attached  to  his 
name,"  but  a  newspaper  clipping  which  he 
thoughtfully  enclosed  will  give  some  of  his 
old  friends  an  idea  as  to  hi s  sliccess. 

In  substance  it  says  that  Mr.  Smith,  on 
December  15,  sold  26  choice  steers  at  a  net

was  the  highest  price  e\"€l'  known  to  have 
been  paid  for  beef  cattle  in  that  locality. 
This  lot  made  a  total  of  105  head  of  cattle 
sold  from  the fa r m  during the yea r,  in  addi 
tion  to  which  100  fat  hogs  and  some  300 
sheep  wer e  disposed  of.

This  is  a  new  department for  the  RECORD, 
but  we  believe  it  will  be  appreciated  by 
many.  The  former  members  of  various  so 
cieties  will  be  glad  to  know  when  their  par 
ties  occur,  and  there  are  other  functions  of 
interest  to  the  alumnus.  The  ed itor,  while 
in  Detroit  recently,  was  asked  about  vari 
ous  parties,  such  as  band  dances  and  mili  
taries,  which  leads  to  the  belief  that  thi s 
column may be helpful.  The list  of activities

NEWEST  ALUMNUS  BECOMES 
RANCH MAN. 

George E.  Piper,  the first  member of 1914 
to  be  graduated  from  M.  A.  C.,  leaves  for 
t he  West  in  a  few  days,  where  he  will  have 
char!!"e  of a  large Montana ranch.  The  posi 
tion,  which  appears  to  be  a  desirable  one 
from  evel~Y  standpoint,  was  secured  partly 
through  the assistance  of  Dean  R.  S.  Shaw. 
Piper's  decision  came  as  a  surprise  to 
many  of  his  friends,  since  his  ability  as  a 
newspaper man  had  led  to  the belief that he 
would  take  up  agri cultural  journalism,  in 
which  he  had  already  shown  considerable 
talent.  For  some  months  he  has  been  edit 
ing a weekly farm page for a  large Michigan 
newspaper  syndicate,  a  work  which  has  re 
ceived  a  good  deal  of  praise.  Piper,  how 
ever,  says,  "Me  for  the outdoor  life ." 

WILLIAM  GILLETTE  SPEAKS  TO 
STUDENTS . 

Last  Tuesday  evening  William  Gillette, 
the  well-known  author  and  playwright, 
spoke  to  a  large  audience  in 
the  College 
Armory.  The  lecture  was  one  of  the  series 
conducted  by  the  Liberal  Arts  Union. 

Mr.  Gillette  had  as  his  s ubject,  "The 
Drama and  Some Other Things."  This  sub 
ject,  he  explained,  comes  from  the  manner 
in which members of the  profession  classify 
plays.  To  them  there  are  no  divisions,  as 
drama,  melodrama,  farce,  comedy,  .etc.  A 
play which gives a  simulation of real  human 
life  is  drama.  Anything  else  is  classed 
among  "other  things." 

"The drama is unassailable," said Mr. Gil-

lette,  "because  of  its  record.  Records  play 
an  important  part  in  all  walks  of  life,  and 
this  is  true  of  the  stage  as  of  everything 
else."  The  speaker  further  declared  that, 
such  being  the  case,  he  could  talk  right 
ahead  wi thout fear  of any  harm  bei ng  done . . 
He  did  not,  as  had  been  expected,  mention 
the  modern  social  QI·ama. 

During the  course  of  the  lecture  Mr.  Gil 
lette  entertained  his  hearers  with  numerous 
anecdotes  gathered  during  his  long  experi 
ence of the stage.  He explained  the origin of 
the  old  stock  compan ies  and  the  cause  of 
their  disappearance,  and  related  several 
stories  about  famous  actors  with  whom  he 
had  come  in  contact.

O.  W.  Schleussner,  '12a,  who  has  been  Kan 
sas  City  representati ve  for  some  months, 
has  been  tran sferred  to  Texas  to  assist  in

Woodin,  '13a,  who  has  been  in  the  Chicago 
offices  of  the  same  firm,  has  been  sent  to 
Kansas  City. 

After  a  short  stay  in  Toledo,  Harry  A. 
Schuyler,  '13a,  has  taken  a  position with  the 
California  Fruit  Growers'  Exchange.  Hi s 
headquarters  in  the  futu r e  will  be  at  908 
Schweiter  Bldg.,  Wichita,  Kansas. 

Fannie  E .  Beal,  '08,  and  her  sister,  are 
studying at Columbia  Un iversity,  New  York 
City,  this  year.  They  spent  the  holidays 
with  Dr.  W.  J.  Beal  and  the  Bakers  at  Am 
her st,  Mass.
