CAPITAL  CITY  ALUMNI  BANQUET. 

Forty-eight  graduates  and  former  stu 
dents,  representing  twenty-two  classes  from 
'67  to  '13,  gathered  at  the  annual  banquet 
of  the  Washington  M.  A.  C.  Association  in 
that city on February 20.  Wives and  guests 
made  the  number  sixty-five.  Seating  was 
by  classes,  bringing  gray  heads  and  heads 
wit h  scarcely  any  hair 
together  at  the 
tables. 

Following  a  fine  dinner,  the  officers  elect 
ed  for  the  coming  year  were:  President, 
Arthur  Adelman,  '04e;  first  vice-president, 
'98a;  second  vice-president, 
H.  C.  Skeels, 
Mrs.  Elva  E .  Hicks,  '90;  secretary,  Miss 
Cora  Feldkamp, 
treasurer,  M.  A. 
'05; 
Crosby,  '02a;  chairman  of  executive  com  
mittee,  W.  J.  Meyers,  '90e. 

Resolutions  were  presented,  recommend 
ing  more  strict  entrance  l'~quirements, 
higher  standards  of  scholarshlp,  and  de 
ploring  the  recent  legislative  action  regard 
ing  the  mechanical  department,  and 
the 
practice  of  having  untrained  graduates  as 
instructors.  The  resolutions  were  intended, 
not  as  a  criticism  of  the College  or  atlthor 
ities  but  as  helpful  suggestions  from  men 
looking  back  through  the  perspective  of 
years  to  their  own  days  in  college .. It was 
not  buildings,  equipment  or  athlehcs  that 
inspir ed  t he students of early days, but men. 
The  executive  committee  was  instructed  to 
arrange  for  joint  meetings  with  the  U.  of 
M.  alumni  in  the  city. 

W.  W.  Tracy,  '67,  president  of  the  asso 
ciation  introduced  Harry  Thurtell,  '88,  as 
toastm~ster.  The  latter  at  once  pro"ed  his 
ability  as  a  "master  roaster"  by  the  hand 
ling  of  his  victims,  who  had  been  warned 
ten  days in  advance. 

Vocal  selections  by  Mrs.  H.  W.  Lawson 
opened  the  program.  J.  H .  Tibbetts,  '73, 
secretary  of  the  Carnegie  Peace  Founda 
tion,  spoke  on  the  great  influence  for  peace 
which  is  exerted  by  our  college  men,  carry 
ing  the  arts  of  peace  to  all  parts  of  the 
world.  He  paid  a  fine  tribute  to  his  class- . 
mate,  Lieut.  Col.  John  P .  Finley,  for  ex 
cellent  work  in  Our  island  possessions. 

W.  A.  Taylor,  '88,  chief of  the  Bureau  of 
Plant  Industry,  spoke  on  "Grafting,"  and 
showed  that,  despite  the degradation  of  this 
once  respected  horticultural  term,  there  are 
still  some  honest  men. 

W.  A.  Kinnan,  '86,  principal  examiner  in 
the  Patent  Office,  di splayed  all  the  fire  and 
loyalty  of  hi s  student  days  in  his  handling 
of  the  su bject,  "Reminiscences."  The  names 
of  Beal,  Kedzie,  and  Abbott  received  a  well 
deserved  meed  of  praise. 

Mrs.  Katherine  Cook  Briggs,  '93,  was 
humorous  in  "Th e  Trials  of  an  Authol'ess," 
while  H.  C.  Skeels,  talking  on  "Anything 
. Serious,"  gave  a  medley  of  rib-loosening 
anecdotes.  N.  D.  Simpson,  13a,  interested 
all  with  his  tales  of  diamond  and  gridiron 
triumphs  during  the  past  year. 

The  gem  of  the  eveni ng  was  the  message 
given  by  Prof.  Thomas  Gunson,  represent 
ing  the  College.  It  was  given  to  us  as  he 
talks  to  the  students  from  the  goodness  of 
his  heart,  and  as  he  told  of  the  great  work 
going  on  at preseht,  and of  the  bright plans 
for the future,  not one  but whose  heart beat 
warm  with  love  for  alma  mater.  At  the 
close,  the  good  old  yell  was  given  with  a 
zest  whlCh  made  the old  feel  young  agalll. 

The  March  number  of  the  A mer'ican 
Magazine  contains  an  excellent  picture  and 
write-up  of  Hon.  C.  W.  Garfield,  '70,  of 
Grand  Rapids.  The  feature  of  the  article, 
which is  by Ida M.  Tarbell,  is  the  work  done 
by  MI'.  Garfield  in  furnishing  playgrounds 
for the  children of the  Furniture  City.  The 
picture  will  be  of  interest to  many  M.  A.  C. 
men  when  they  know  it  was  taken  in  the 
College  Arboretum  in  June,  1912,  by  G. 
Verne  Branch,  '12a.  On  that  day  Mr.  Gar 
field  had  been  talking  to  the  seniors,  as  is 
his  annual  custom.  after  which  all  went  to 
the  Arboretum.  The  visit  was  significant, 
in  that  Mr.  Garfield  planted  the  trees  him 
self,  in  1873,  while  assistant  to  Dr.  Beal. 

David  Anderson,  '89a,  is at present  presi 
dent  of  Paw  Paw  village,  and  a  member  of 
the  board  of  education.

ARE  rou A  GOOD  I NFESTMENT ? 

The  following  is  part  of  a  talk  prepared 
for  the  annual  meeting  of  the  Lansing  M. 
A.  C.  Association,  which  was  held  last Wed 
nesday.  We  are  of  the  opinion  that  alumni 
in all  parts of  the country  may  find  food for 
r eflection  in  some  of  the  ideas  adva nced . 

Comparisons  of  the  alumni  associations 
of  state  and  endo\ved 
institutions  show 
some  interesting  data.  With  the  latter ,  th.e 
college  e.:"peets,  and  qui te  naturally  gets, 
more  substantial  support  from  the  alumni 
than  does  the  former.  Too  often  graduates 
of state institutions feel  that they  have  hon 
ored  the  school  by  attending,  and  that little 
mor e  is  to  be  expeeted  of  them. 

As  a  matter  of  fact,  statistics  which  have 
been  compiled  by  certain  colleges  similar  to 
our  own  show  that,  where  a  student  attends 
the  college  for  a  period  of  f our  years,  the 
cost  to  the  state,  over  and  above  what  the 
student  pays,  ranges  from  a  couple  of  hun  
I n  each  matl'ic 
dred  to  a  thousand  dollars. 
ulate  who  leaves  such  an  institution,  repre 
sents  that  much  money, 
invested  by  the 
state.  Suppose  in  the  case  of  M.  A.  C.  that 
the  amount  named  be  $500. 

Had  the  student  been  obliged  to  borrow 
the  money,  a  1arge  percentage  would  never 
have  received  the  benefits  of  a  college  edu 
cation .  E ven  those that  did  would  have  had 
to  pay  some  interest.  Suppose  he  had  been 
unable  to  remove  the  principal  within  five 
years,  and  had  been  paying  even  as  low  as 
three  per  cent.  on  it.  A  neat  little  sum  of 

$75  is  the  answer.  Suppose,  to  be  abso 
lutely  liberal,  t he  interest  was  but  one  per 
cent.  The  amount  then  would  be  $5  a  year. 
If the individual  is  to  be  regarded  as  a  state 
investment,  the  state  has  a  ri ght.  morall,v 
at  least,  to  some  r etul"l1 .  Were  thi s  to  be 
made  through  the  alumni  organization  of 
the  college  or  university,  it  would  be  called 
"dues,"  and  those  who  paid  would  be  mem 
bers.  Tili s  is  a  step  that  has  actually  been 
ca rri ed  out,  with  no  little success  in  at least 
one  organization  similar  to  our  own. 

The  above  is  merely  to  show  that  gradu 
ates  of  state  institutions  do  have  a  respon 
sibility  to their alma  mater,  t hough it is  sel 
dom  considered  in  so  concrete  a  form.  Ad 
mitting- that,  in  most  cases,  the  college  does 
receive  credit  th rough  the  performances  of 
its  matriculates,  the  fact  yet  remains  that 
a  large  portion  of  the  debt  is  never  repaid. 
The  permanent  investment,  the  years  spent 
in  building  H  reputatioll,  and  the  yalue  of 
t hat repu tatio n  to  the  newly  made  bachelOl"s 
of  science  are  beyond  any  power  to  esti 
mate. 

Admitting  the  existence  of  such  obliga 
tions,  we  ask,  H\Vhat  can  we  do ::,  One 
answer  is  to  unjte,  organize,  be  prepared. 
Keep  in  touch  with  the  progress  of  the Col 
lege,  and  the  plan  of  action  will  be  made 
pla in  when  the  time  comes.  Boost  [01'  the 
College  at all  times.  Let  people  know  whel"e 
you are  from,  and  stl'i\'e  to  send  other;';,  the 
kind  who  will  make  the  right  sort  of  M.  A. 
C.  men  and  women,  to  yOUi'  alma  mater.  Be 
informed  on  questions  touching'  affairs  of 
the  College.

necessary  to  the  acquisition  of  a  broad  cul 
ture;  the  time  has  come  when  they  should 
no  longer  be  made  l'equi l'ements  for  college 
entrance.  Courses  in  commercial  training, 
household  arts,  and  manual  training  can  be 
made  qu ite  as  serious  and  mental1y  broad 
ening  as  college  preparatory  courses,  and, 
in  addition,  are  of  intellectual  interest  and 
necessity. 

"Of t he  whole  college  preparatory  course, 
two-thirds,  including  Engli sh,  is  language 
work.  History  and  science,  t he  most  valu 
able  broadening  subjects,  get  but  one 
twelfth  each  of  the  course.  There  is  but 
little  in  the  college  preparatory  course  that

BY - LAWS.

1.  The  name  by  which  this  organization 
shall  be  designated  in  the  articles  of  incor 
poration  shall  be  the  Michigan  Agr icultural 
College  AssociatiolL 

2.  At  the  regular  meetings  of  the  Asso 
ciation  the executi ve  officers  and  three mem .. 
bel's  of  the executive  board  shall  be  elected, 
and  shall  hold  office  until  the  next  regular 
meeting.  and  until  their  successors  shall  be 
chosen. 

3.  The duties of the executive  officers shall 
be  of  the  sort  usually  assigned  similarly 
named  officials  as t hose  indicated. 

4.  The  members  of the  executive  boar d  to 
be  elected  by  the  local  alumn i  associations 
shall  be  chosen  at  t he  regu lar  ann ual  meet-' 
ing of these associations, and shall  hold office 
until  their  successors  shall  be  elected. 

5.  A  local  alumni  association  shall  be  en 
titled  to  elect  a  member  of  the  executive 
board  upon  its  organization  under  the  con 
stitution.  Recognized  associations  are  at 
present  those  of  Chicago,  New  England, 
\¥ashington,  Western  New  York,  Detroit. 
Flint,  Grand  llapids.  Lansing,  Jackson.  and 
;\linneapoli,. 

6.  The  executive  board  is  given  the  gen 
eml  direction  of  the  affairs  of  the  Associa 
tio n,  subject  to  the direction  of the  Associa 
tion  as  expressed  at  l'egular  meetings,  01'  by 
the  con stitutional  referendum. 

7.  The  number  of  membe1's  of  the  execll 
tive  board  pr esent  at  any  r egulal'ly  s um 
moned  meeting  shan  constitute  a  quorum 
qualified  to do  business.  Bya majority  vote 
of the members present, any question  may be 
submitted  fo r  a  ballot  by  mail  to  the  mem 
bers  of  the  Association.  All  questions  shall 
to  members  of  the 
be  submitted  by  mail 
Board. 

8.  The  Secretary  of  the  Association  shall 
hold office  until his successor shall be elected, 
and  shall  be  subject  to  the  direction  of  the 
executive  board. 

9.  The meetings,  01'  r eunions, of the  Asso 
ciation  shall  be  held  annually;  shall  be held 
upon  the  college  campus,  Commencement 
Day,  and  classes  will  be  requested  to  attend 
in  groups,  as  shown  in  the  diagram  in  this 
issue  of  the  RECORD.  All  members  of  the 
Association  will  be  welcome,  of  course,  at 
any  meeting. 

10.  All  fu nds belonging to the Association 
must  be  deposited  with  the  Association's 
Treasurer;  moneys  may  be  drawn  from 
treasury  by  orders  upon  the  Association 
Treasurer,  dr awn  by  the  Association  Secre 
tary  and  countersigned  by  the  Association 
Presi dent.  The  accounts  of  the  Secretary 
and  Treaslirer  must  be  audited  annually. 

11.  The  Constitution  may  be  amended  by 
a  majority  of  the  members  voting  by  mail, 
all  R ECORD  ballots,  notice  having  been  given 
of  the proposed  amendments  in  the  M.  A.  C. 
RECORD  during  three  issues  priol'  to  the 
regular  meeting.

FINE  MEETING  AT  LANSING . 

VETERINARY DEPARTMENT TO  INSTALL 
NEW  SHORT  COURSE. 

Lansing  alumni  and  friends  to  the  num 
ber  of  100  gathered  about  the  festh~ e uoarrl 
at  the  Cham uer  of  Commerce  last  Wedne, 
day  night,  and  made  merry  with  college 
songs  and  anecdotes  of  past  days.  Twenty 
seven  classes  from  '61  to  I V1  were  repre 
sented.  Officers  for  1914  were  elected  as

Judge  Collingwood  then  took  com

J.  H.  Gunnison,  '61,  one  of  the  fir, t  stu 
dents  to  enter  the  college,  made  a  few  re 
marks.  A.  C.  Anderson.  '06,  professor  of 
dairying a.t  t he  Col lege,  spoke  of the impres 
si ons  ga ined  from  class  after  class  of  new 
students.  Zelin  C.  Goedell ,  \\'ho  graduated 
in  forestry  and  went  to  wO l'k  as  an  insur 
ance  man  the  next  day,  emphasized  the 
necessit~'  of  the  College  pa,\-ing  more  atten 
tion  to  the  "axocations"  of  undergl'adllHtes. 
Such men  as  Dr.  A.  J.  Cook,  L.  H.  nailey, 
P.  G.  Holden  and  Eugene  Da\'enpOlt  \\'ere

M.  A.  C.  has  done  wonderfully  well  for  so 
young  a  college.  in  producing  men  of  this 
type.  F.  L.  Radford,  '01.  yoiced  t he  senti 
ments  of  the  engineering  graduate~  who 
w ish  the  name  of  the  college  changed ,  but 
stated  that  whatever  the  name,  the  men 
would  still  be  loyal.  Dr.  F.  S.  Kedzie.  Oil 
"Town  and  Gown,"  deplored  the  lack  of  in 
terest  in  the  college  exhibited  by  Lansing 
people  at  large,  and  stated  t hat  the  college 
in  itself  would  have  been  sufficient  to  make 
the  name  of  Lansing  famous.  W.  K.  Prud 
den  and  F.  F.  Rogers  also  gave  inspi ring 
short  tall<s.

in  the U. S.  service,  having his headquarters 
at  Medford,  Ore. 

The  outline  for  a  short  course  in  \'eter 
inary  subjects  has  been  submitted  lo  the 
State  Board,  and  appeal's  to  meet  \\'ith  their 
appro,·al.  Dean  Lyman  has  felt  for  some 
time  that  the  practitioners  of  the  state 
\\'ou ld  be  quick  to  take  advantage  of  slich  a

The  RECORD  blank  of  Charles  Johnson, 
'99a,  of  Belding,  Mich.,  has  just  been  re 
ceived.  Among  other  th ings,  Mr.  Johnson 
held  the  position  of  temporary  commandant 
of  the  cadet  corps  after  the  outbreak  of  the 
Spanish-American  war.  We  have  heard  of 
no  other  student  who  held  this  post. 

U.  P.  Hedrick,  '93a,  of Geneva,  N.  Y.,  was 
at the College part of last  week.  He  reports 
a  strong  interest  among  the  alumni  in  west 
ern  New  York,  and  stated  that  the  annual 
banquet of  the  Association  will  be  held  i.n  a 
few  weeks. 

Prof.  H.  K.  Vedder  and  wife,  Pres.  J.  L. 
Snyder,  and  Prof.  A.  J.  Clark expect  to  rep 
resent  the  College  at  the  annual  dinner  of 
the  Chicago  Association.  Coach  Macklin 
will  probably  be  present,  also. 

Early  indications  point  to  a  big  attend 
ance  and  a  lively  interest  in  the  Farmers' 
Week,  which opened  at the  College  Monday. 
The  new  form  of  the  Round-up  Institute  is 
receiving  its  first  trial 
in  Mi chi gan,  al 
though  other  states  have  found  it  to  be 
quite  popular. 

C.  S.  Langdon,  'l1a,  of  Bay  City,  was 
the  Eunomian  party.  Langdon

has  been  busily  engaged  in  getting  a  local 
association  under  way  in  the  Saginaw  val  
ley,  and  his  labors  will  bear  fruit  on  the 
night  of  March  6,  when  a  rousing  banquet 
will  be  held  in  Bay  City .  Nearly  60  alumni 
and  former  students  have  been  rounded  up, 
and  a  live  organization  will  probably  result. 
Prof.  Hedrick,  Dr.  F.  S.  Kedzie,  and  Gen 
eral  Secretary  George  C.  Sheffield  expect  to 
represent  the  College. 

Floyd  W.  Owen,  '02a,  is  at the head  of the 
Crescent  Co.,  of  Detroit.  The  company  has 
been  interested  in  developing  a  compressed 
air  starter  for  automobiles.  The  offices  a re

with  him  in  the  work. 

William  L.  Lightbody,  '89a,  is  now  prin

FARMERS'  CLUB. 

"Emergency  Methods,"  as  related  to  the 
care of farm  animals,  was  the  subject  taken 
by  Dr.  McDaniels,  of  the  veterinary  depart 
ment,  before  the  last  meeti ng  of  the  Farm 
ers'  Club .  A  few  of  the  most  common 
emergencies  were  related,  with  advice  as  to 
the  proper  action  in  each  case,  after  whi ch 
the  meeting  was  opened  to  discussion  of  in 
dividual  experiences.  Much  useful  informa 
tion  was  deri ved  by  those  present,  and  the 
club  plans  to  meet  in  the  Veterinary  Build 
ing  at  an  early  date,  for  further  enlighten -
ment  along  these lines.

Galien,  Mich.,  is  the  man,  and  appears  to  be 
doing  finely  on  a  400-acre  farm.  He  has  a 
fine  flock  of  White  Wyandottes,  and  fine 
stock  of  all  kinds  is  a  specialty  with  him.

Dalton  Moomaw,  '07e,  has 

resigned  his 
position  as  assistant  professor of  mechanics 
at Case,  to take up county engineering  work 
in Cleveland. 

L.  E.  Hall,  a  s uccessfu l  fruit  grower  of 
Ionia  county,  addressed 
the  meeting,  and 
outlined  the  points  which  ha ve  proved  effec 
tive in  his  experience  of many  years. 

He believes his  good  r esults are due large 
ly  to  the following:  He  does  not  use  fillers, 
preferring culti vated  crops,  and  holding  the 
opinion  that  allowing  hogs  to  forage  in  the 
orchard  is  beneficial;  in  pruning,  he  says 
the  heading of a  t ree  is  not  so  important  as 
the  after  training;  he  takes  off  the  fruit 
spu rs  before  the  blossoms  appear,  sa,;ng 
much  vitality  to  the  tree;  finds  that  Bor 
deaux  m ixt ure  is  still  the  most satisfactory 
spray,  urging  t horoughness  above  all  else .. 
I n  marketing,  integrity  should  go  ha nd 
in  hand  with  good  business  sense.  Great 
is  essential,  for 
care  in  sorting  the  fruit 
reputations  are  built  upon  details.  A  study 
of  conditions  as  an  aid  to  locating  the  best 
markets  is  invaluable  in  getting  the  best 
prices  for  the  fru it.

BASKETEERS  IN  SUCCESSFUL  TRIP. 

Coach  Macklin  and  hi s  squad  oj'  basket 
ball  tossers,  nine  strong,  invaded  Toledo 
last  week,  with  gratifying  results.  St. 
J ohns  College  proved  the  first  victims.  suc 
cumbing  to  a  count  of  50  to  17.  M.  A.  C. 
led  all  the  way.  and  was  never  'in  dangel', 
displaying  some  of  the  most  brilli ant  work 
seen  in  the  Maumee  citv  this  winter. 

The  Buckeyes,  who  were  defeated  at  East 
Lansing  early  in  the  season,  were  met  in 
the  second  contest.  The  game  was  as  close 
and  hard  fought  as  a ny  t he  local  playe r s 
have  indulged  in,  and  went  to  the  Farmers 
at  the  close  by  the  nanow  margin  of  one 
point,  the  final  count  standing  26  to  25. 
Frimodig,  the  big freshman,  abl y  s upported 
by  the  entire  team,  was  the  star  of  both 
games,  caging  basket  after  basket  from  the 
fiel d  in  a  sensational  manner. 

The season  will  end  in  Detroi t  next  Tues 
day  night,  when  the  Aggies  will  seek  1'e 
venge  for  the  beating  handed  them  by  the 
"Y"  some  weeks  ago.  The  game  wil1  be 
hard  fought,  for  it  will  be  the  final  appear 
a nce  of  at  least  two  members  of  the  squad, 
Capt.  Gauthier  and  Vatz  being  seniors. 

G.  W.  Lindsley,  '09a,  had  charge  of  the 
large  orchards  of  W .  A.  Watts  near Lowell, 
during the  past season.  An  interesting fea  
tu r e  of  his  work  lay  in  the  shipment  of  a 
carload  of  perfect  No rthern  Spies  to  Eng 
land .  The  apples  were  some  of  the  finest 
ever  sent  over  the  pond,  and  the  price  ob 
tained  stands  as  a  record  in  that country.
