MICHIGAN  WINS  FIRST  GAME . 

ANNUAL  GOVERNMENT  INSPECTION. 

When  Fuller  lost  trace  of  the  Ga ll  in  the 
sun,  muffing  an  easy  fly  which  would  have 
made  the  third  out,  he  paved  the  way  for 
Michigan  to  score  two  runs  in  the  sixth  in 
ning.  Th ese  would  have  been  enough 
to 
win  the  game,  as  it  proved,  but  just  to 
make  it  sU l'e,  the  Uni\-ersity  team  fe ll  on 
Dodge  for  three  hits  in  the  ninth,  combin 
ing  them  with  some 
fielding,  and 
pushed  f our  more  over.  Wh en  the  smoke 
of  battle  had  cleared  awa y,  the  count  was 
6  to  0  in  favor  of  the  Ann  Al·borites.

Some  thick-headed  base  running  cost  ill. 
A.  C.  two  runs  in  t he  th ird,  Fuller  being 
caught  off  th ird  base  after  a  ca ught  fly  by 
Sisler.  Mr.  Sisler,  by  the  way,  lived  up  to 
hi s  reputation  as  a  hitter,  fi guring  promi  
nently  in  each  of  the  scoring  bees  staged  by 
his  conf eder at es.  After  the  fourth,  M.  A. 
C.  had  few  chances  to  score,  F erguson  he 
comi ng  better  as  the  game  pr oceeded. 

Dodge  pitched  gilt-edged  ball,  and  should 
have  gained  the  decision  but  fo r  the  \Vorl.;: 
of  his  mat es.  He  retired  thi rteen  Michigan 
batters  on  strikes,  and  fielded  well.  Bib 
bins,  his  battery  1;1ate,  played  a  heady 
game,  but  was  handi capped  in  th rowi ng  to 
the  bases  by  a  split  finger. 

The  game  was,  for  the  most  pa rt,  devoid 
of  f eatures,  both  teams  going  out  in  order 
il lichigan  players 
most  of  the  time.  The 
seemed  to  be  a  trifle  more  aggressive,  and 
were  lucky  in  placi ng  the ir  hi ts.  Th e  local 
team  hit the  ball  fully  as  hard  but  in  nearly 
every  case  the  drive  went  directly  at  some 
fielder.

of  Agriculture,  University  of  Georgia,  at 
Athens,  Ga.

was  enjoyably  cool. . 

Consideri ng  the  number  of  drills  which 
have  been  postponed  because of  ball  games 
and  bad  weather,  the  corps  made  an  excel 
lent  showing.  Following  the  inspection  of 
com panies,  company  and  battalion  drills,  in 
close  and  extended  order,  were  given,  both 
officers  and  me n  showi ng  a  good  under 
:"tanding  of  what  was  required  of  them.

spoke  of  how  the  entering  class  in  1857 
hel ped  clean  up  after  the  carpente rs  in  Col 
lege  Hal l.  This  in cident  was  recently  re 
called  by  E.  C.  Peters,  '93,  of  Sagi naw,  who 
stated  that  '93  helped  plane  t he  Aoor  of  the 
Armory  so  that  it  might  be  ready  for  Com 
mencement  exercises  in  that  year.

day  at  the  Panama·Pacific  Exposition.  A 
large  number  of  our  people  ar e  probably 
planning  to  visit  the  Exposition,  and  there 
IS  no  reason  why  their  visits  could  not  be 
so  timed  as  to  bring  them  to  San  Francisco 
that  day,  provided  the  alT31wements 
on 
were  made  sufficiently  far  in  advan~e, 

Think  the  matter  over,  and  be  ready  to 
give  your  ideas  on  it  when  you  get  into  the 
meeting.  Some  idea  of  t he  plan  will  be

We  believe  that,  as  a  rule,  frankness 
pays  best,  and  that  the  present  time  will 
serve  to  present  one  phase  of  a  difficulty  to

Possibly  you  have  been  looking  fo rwal·d 
to  visiting  the  old  College  at  r euni on  time 
this  year.  We  hope  so.  We  hope  that  the 
number  of  those  who  plan  to  again  see  the 
campus,  with  its  familial'  and  unfami liar 
scenes,  will  be  legion.  There  will  be  a  war m 
handclasp  and  a  hearty  welcome  awaiting 
each  and  everyo ne  of  the  children  of  alma 
mater  who  ar e  able  to  tread  the  broad  lawn 
on  June  23d. 

In  other  yea rs  it  has  been  customary  to 
send  out  announcements  and  to  provide 
means for  repl yi ng, so  that some  idea of the 
number  planning  to  attend  could  be  gath-

ered.  We  hope  that  we  may  yet  be  able  to 
do  t his  in  time  for  the  reunion. 

The  present financial  situation  at  the Col· 
lege,  however,  has  affected  the  alumni  de 
paltment  in  such  a  way  that  it  has  been 
unable  to  carry  out  that  idea,  and  we  are 
for  the  most  part,  un informed  as  to  th~ 
name  01'  number  of  those  who  are  coming 
back. 

Here's  the  idea.  Each  reader  of  t he  REC· 
ORD  can  render  a  very  great  service  at  al 
inconvenience  to  him

self  if  he  will  just  send  a  postal  card  to  t he 
Alumni  Secretary,  saying  that  he  is  plan  
ning  to  be 
in  East  Lansing  fo r  the  big 
show,  and  giving  the  names  of  two  or  three 
especial  friends  whom  he  would

Do  that  TODAY!  Don't  put  it  off  and 
forget  about  it.  Let  us  know  you  are  com 
ing-and  do  your  best  to  get  some  one  else

WHY  YOU  S HOULD  PLAN  TO  COME. 

There  are  so  many  good  reasons  whv  the 
alumni  and  former  students  should  plilll  to 
be  at  East  Lansing  this  year  that  the  sing· 
hng  out  of  anyone  of  them  is  a  difficult 
proposition,  However,  there  is  a  special 
appeal  to  the  classes  indicated  on  the  re 
union  plan  adopted  this  year. 

As  a  recent  writer  to  the  RE CORD  put  it 
"In  t he  heart  of  eyery  true  son  and  c1augh: 
tel'  of M.  A.  C.  there is  a  longing to  be  back 
on  the  old  campus."  And  when  vou  want 
to  come  back,  is  there  any  better  time  t.o 
come  than  when  you  l'easonablv  expect  to

awaiting  you  undel:  the  trees? 

That  is  why  the  1914  r eunion  should 
have  an  especial  appeal  to  the  designated

The  State  Board  met  Wednesday  of  this 
week  to consider  ways  and means of  rai sing 
money  to  run  the  College  until  the  end  of 
the term.  Some of t he  members believe that 
suffic~ent money  can  be  borrowed  to  pay  the 
salanes of the 200  odd  instructors  who have 
not  seen  anything  resembling  a  pay  checl::: 
fo r  the  past  six  weeks .

and  is  explanatory  in  itself:

The  enclosed  letter  from  Mr.  Gagel'  C. 
Davis,  Secretary  of  the  M.  A.  C.  Associa 
tion  of  Southern  California,  sets forth  what 
seems  to  me  to  be  a  most  excellent  idea,  as 
giving  us  western  fellows  a  rare  opportun  
ity of  greeting  and  welcoming  many  of  our 
old  time  friends . 
It  also  creates  what  we 
t rust  will  be  an  added  inducement  to  many 
of  those  friends  to  come  and  see  our  big 
show,  and  unite  with  us  in  celebrating  Olll' 
Uncle  Samuel's  great  achievement.  Hoping

There  is  a  movement  on  foot 

to  have 
some  one  day  next  year  as  M.  A.  C.  day  at 
the  San  Francisco  exposition.  There  will 
probably  be  many  of  the  alumni  and  stu 
dents  and  faculty  who  will  visit  t he  exposi 
tion,  and  it seems  to  Mr.  Voigt  and  myself 
that  it  would  be  a  good  idea  to  encourage 
the  designating  of such  a  day,  when  we can 
a ll  meet  together. 

The  undertaking  must  be  started  lar gely 
from  the  West,  and  we  know  of  no  better 
persons  to  start  the  work  than  you  and 
Prof.  Cook,  by  each  sending  a  brief  article 
to  the  RECORD, suggesting  that such  a  meet 
ing  be  held.  Then 
t he  matter  can  be 
brought  up  at  the  alumni  meeting  next 
month,  and  brought  to  a  successful  issue 
as  to  details.  Mr.  Voigt  wi ll  be  there  to 
see  to  that par t  of  it.  Am  writing  to  Prof. 
Cook,  and  hope  you  will  both  a id  us  as 
much  as  you  can.  Whatever  is  done  must 
be  done  at  once,  to  get  it  properly  before

Prof. V.  R.  Gardner,  '05a,  and  wife  (Ber 
nice  Jackson,  '05)  are  planning  a  trip  to 
Michigan  t his  summer,  although  doubtful 
if  they  will  be  able  to  attend  t he  reunion. 
There  is  always  a  hope,  however  faint. 

Announcement  of  the  marriage  of  Mr. 
Arthur  E .  Kocher,  '02a,  and  Mrs.  Wilma 
K.  Jones,  on  Thursday,  April  30,  has  been 
received.  The  ceremon y  took  place  at  Los 
Angeles,  Cal. 

Mr.  Kocher  is  employed  in  the  U.  S.  De 
partment  of  Agricu lture,  Bureau  of  Soi ls, 
and  for the  past few  month s  has  been  work 
ing  on  a  soil  investigation  in  Southern  Cali 
fornia.  The  couple  will  be at  home  to  their 
friends  at  Washington ,  D.  C.

gaged  in  developing  plans  for  a  banquet,  to 
be  held  Friday,  May  22.  T here  are  a  large

city,  and  prospects  are  good  for  a  spilited 
meeting.  Don  D.  Stone  is  secretary  of  the 
association,  and  would  be  glad  to  heal'  from

At  Li ncoln,  Neb.,  I  met  E.  A.  Burnett, 
'87,  who  is  Dean  of  Agriculture  and  Di 
rector  of  the  Experiment  Station

University  of  Nebraska.  Just at present  he 
is  interested in  the  disc ussion  of  mo ving the 
University  from  the  city  of  Lincoln  to  the 
suburbs,  where  the  Agricl!ltural  College  is 
the 
already  located.

Mr.  Burnett  ra nks  high  in  the  estimation 
of  the  people  of  Nebraska,  and  with  the aid 
of  hi s  estimable  wife,  maintains  a  most

E.  Carl  Bank,  '84,  resides
