increase  in  salary,  and  the  following  resolution  was 
adopted: 

Resolved,  T h at  county  agents  may  be  appointed  in 
Mason,  Ottawa,  Van  Buren,  and  Schoolcraft  counties, 
and  t h at  as  an  emergency  measure  they  may  be  paid 
from  the  Lever  fund  at  the  r a te  of  $1,200  per  a n n um 
for  the  balance  of  the  present  fiscal  year  only.

was  no  professor  of  botany  as  such,  but

In  1860  or  1861,  however,  Dr. 
George  T h u r b er  was  appointed  pro 
fessor  of  botany  and  h o r t i c u l t u r e,  re

Dr.  T h u r b er  was  a  botanist  of  consid 
erable  renown.  Like  all  botanists  of 
t h at  day  in  America  h is  interests  were 
confined  to  t he  systematic  side  of  the 
subject.  About  1863  he  was  succeeded 
by  Albert  Prentiss,  a  recent  g r a d u a te 
of  the  College,  who  was  first  appointed 
as 
i n s t r u c t or  b ut  soon  after  as  pro 
fessor  of  botany  and  horticulture.  No 
laboratory  work  was  given  in  t he  sub 
ject  of  botany,  t he  lessons  consisting 
of  assignments  of  a  certain  n u m b er  of 
pages  of  Gray's  Lessons  which  had  to

M A.  C.  '69.  He  received  the  degree 
of  A.  B.  in  '96,  B.  Sc.  in  '97, and  A.  M. 
in  '98  at  the  University  of  Nebraska. 
In  March,  1899, he  entered  government 
service  in  t he  Department  of  Agricul 
ture  as  assistant  plant  pathologist.

1901  he  was  put  in  charge  of  the  Office

John  A.  Carmody  (a)  was.appointed 
by  the  State  Board,  at  their  meeting 
last  week,  to  the  position  of  extension 
representative  in  horticulture  at  M.  A. 
C.  Since  graduation  Carmody  has  been 
employd  in  this  work  in  Kentucky  and 
has  made  an  enviable  reputation.  He 
will  be  a  valuable  addition  to  M.  A. 
C.'s  extension  staff.
