• 1 MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING of the MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES November 15, 1984 j President Mackey called the meeting to order in the Board Room of the Administration \ Building at 2:29 p.m. on Thursday, November 15, 1984. | Present: Trustees Dade, Lick, Owen, Reed, Sawyer and Wilson; President Mackey, I I I j j j I Provost Winder, Vice Presidents Breslin, Cantlon, Schonbein, Stewart and Turner; Acting Vice President and Secretary Wilkinson, Faculty Liaison Group and Student Liaison Group. Also present were: Bruce Rossiter, Associate Vice President for the Development Fund, and Presidential Search Committee members: Mr. Charles Krupka (Student), Ms. Janet Topolsky (Alumni), Dr. Patricia Barnes-McConnell (Faculty), Dr.. G. J. Karabatsos (Faculty), and Dr. Richard Lewis (Administration-Dean). Absent: Trustee Martin. President Mackey .recognized Trustee Dade, who introduced the members of the ^ Presidential Search Committee. Trustee Dade reported that Dr. Lawrence Sommers, Executive Director of the Presidential Search Committee, would present the Presidential Search Committee Report to the Board of Trustees. Dr. Sommers summarized the activities of the Committee. This included events leading to the establishment of the Presidential Search Committee, commencing with the notification by President M. Cecil Mackey to the Board of Trustees of his intent to leave the presidency of Michigan State University no later than June of 1985 through the establishment of the Presidential Search Committee on June 15, 1984. Dr. Sommers reviewed the timetable of the Committee and the presidential expectations as developed by the Committee. Dr. Sommers concluded his remarks by stating that the Presidental Search Committee, by unanimous consensus, recommends one candidate to the Board of Trustees, namely Dr. John A. DiBiaggio, President, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut. The non-Trustee members of the Presidential Search Committee then gave brief comments in support of the Committee's report, emphasizing the unanimous support of the recommendation and the outstanding qualifications of Dr. DiBiaggio. Trustee Dade moved that the Presidential Search Committee Report to the Board of Trustees be accepted. Seconded by Trustee Wilson. Approved by a vote of 6 to 0. I DiBiaggio as \ President of j MSU Effective j July 1, 1985 j 1 at Annual I Salary of j $99,800 and Deferred j Compensation oil I $13,000 Trustee Sawyer moved that the Board of Trustees hereby appoint Dr. John A. DiBiaggio as the President of Michigan State University effective July 1, 1985, at an annual salary of $99,800 and deferred compensation of $13,000. Seconded by Trustee Reed. On a roll call vote the recommendation was approved by a vote of 6 to 0 with Trustees Dade, Lick, Owen, Reed, Sawyer and Wilson voting Yes. Each member of the Board of Trustees briefly commented on the appointment of Dr. DiBiaggio and the unique qualifications which he brings to the presidency. Trustee Sawyer expressed the Board's appreciation to President Mackey for his service and the courtesies extended by the Mackeys to the DiBiaggios. In addition to his personal remarks, Trustee Dade read a personal communication from Trustee Martin in support of the Board action. Introduction of Dr. and Mrs. John A. DiBiaggio Trustees Lick and Reed escorted Dr. and Mrs. DiBiaggio into the Board Room. Dr. Mackey, on behalf of the University community, welcomed the DiBiaggios to Michigan State University and presented him with a Spartan green blazer. Dr. DiBiaggio indicated his acceptance of the presidency and thanked the Board of Trustees for its confidence in him.
