1 I I 10441 MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES July 27, 1993 The Special Meeting of the Michigan State University Board of Trustees was called to order by Chairperson Joel Ferguson on Tuesday, July 27, 1993, at 5:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Room of The Kellogg Center, The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the presidential search and to provide an opportunity for public participation. Trustees present: Dolores M. Cook, Joel Ferguson, Dorothy Gonzales, Russell G. Mawby, Barbara Sawyer-Koch, John D. Shingleton, Bob Traxler, and Robert E. Weiss- University officer present: Secretary Marcellette G. Williams. Others present: Dry Bruce Miller, Executive Director, Presidential Search Committee* All actions taken were by unanimous vote of the Trustees present, unless otherwise noted. 1. 2. 3. On a motion by-Mr. Shingleton, supported by Ms. Cook, THE BOARD VOTED to approve the agenda. Chairperson Ferguson distributed a letter he received from Mr. Eli Broad, dated July 26, 1993, regarding the presidential search, and his July 27, 1993 letter of response to Mr. Broad. Both letters are included with the agenda in the Office of the Secretary of the Board of Trustees. - The following individuals addressed the Board of Trustees regarding the presidential search and the appointment of a President* Their comments are included with the agenda in the Office of the Secretary of the Board of Trustees. Their remarks are included with the agenda in the Office of the Secretary of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Weiss requested to have the letters and comments which have been received by individual Trustees or in the offices of the Presidential Search and/or the Secretary of the Board be made a part of the record of the meeting. Those items are included with the agenda materials in the Office of the Secretary of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Weiss recommended that the meeting be adjourned. The motion was supported by Mr. Shingleton. At the request of Chairperson Ferguson, a ROLL CALL VOTE to adjourn the meeting was conducted by Secretary Williams. Trustees Cook, Mawby, Shingleton, and Traxler voted Yes* Trustees Ferguson, Gonzales, Sawyer-Koch and Weiss voted No- Following discussion of Ms. Sawyer-Koch's suggestion for a date to be determined when the Board would reconvene, it was recommended by Dr. Mawby, supported by Mr. Shingleton, that the Presidential Search Committee review the names of those they have already interviewed plus any other names, in accordance with the procedures, that Board members may wish to suggest to the Committee for consideration and report back to the Board in one week. The Board will then look further at the issue; Trustees commented on the motion. Ms. Cook recommended that the motion be amended so the Search Committee could meet at a mutually agreeable time as soon as is convenient for all members. Mr. Ferguson reported that the Search Committee would reconvene. Board members would be contacted, and a meeting would be scheduled• The MOTION was approved by a vote of 7-1.
