The following r e p o rt is submitted by t he committee chosen by P r e s i d e nt Faculty Report of , ' F* S* Kedzie to consider t he memorandum of S o il and Economic Survey p r e s e n t ed by Director R* C* Allen, State Geologist, and others, under date of Jan.$, 1917* (1) We believe a soil and economic survey of the newer portiGiisof Michigan would be of great service in stimulating and directing agricultural development* In such a survey we would consider investigations relating to soils, climate and other natural resources as of primary importance, and other economic phases mentioned in the memorandum as secondary because of tneir dependence on the former and the possibilities of speedy and radical changes* (2) If legislation should be enacted authorizing investigations as described by this memorandum it is our opinion that the Michigan Agricultural College should not be charged with the administration of the same because of the varied economic, sociological and industrial features included in the add- ition to the soil survey* (3) At the same time we..are thoroughly of the opinion that if the state legislation authorizes, and. provides for the conduct of investigations as described in tiie memorandum, a cooperative agreement should be made between those charged with the administration of the investigations and the Michigan Agricultural College relating to the agricultural or soils investigation phases of the work* The special training of men in Soils and Science and 'the varied and extensive facilities of the College would aid in providing co-operators who should see clearly, interpret correctly and direct safely* Committee • ! j concerning, j I memorandum^ from t he : S t a te Geol> ft ft* •If 11 n 296 I li'v ft" .-": .'ifte i- f I?- a I: J- ! IT ii :| i; (*O We believe the newer portions of Michigan are not only greatly in need of a soil survey but require an agricultural survey in i ts broadest sense involving the cooperation of soil physicists, crops experts, animal and dairy husbandmen, h o r t i c u l t u r i s t s, geologists, chemists, meteorologists, botanists and other scientists as well* . On motion of Mr. Woodman, the recommendation t h at Miss Clara Morse be employed in extension work u n t il September 1st n e x t, at a salary of $1000.00 per y e a r, was approved. The President presented a communication from t he Mayor of the City of East Lansing asking the Board to make provision for a s s i s t i ng in paving Grand River Avenue. - On motion of Mr. Doherty, the Secretary was d i r e c t ed to draw an enabling act permitting the Board to appropriate funds for t n is purpose. On motion of Mr. Doherty, the p e t i t i o ns of several students for refund of the A t h l e t ic and Liberal Arts fees- as presented by the P r e s i d e n t, were refused* On motion of Mr* Doherty, t he request of Mr. Clinton B.
