Due to the development  and extension of the tree fruit breeding work 
at the South Haven Experiment  Station, we are now in need of more land for its 
continuance.  There is also a pressing demand from the fruit  growers of that 
locality for experimental work with small fruits, while the Office of the Hort 
icultural Investigations at Washington, D . C, desires to start  some work their e 
on the development  of certain phases of nursery  stock investigations. 

The fruit growers of South Haven have offered us ten acres or more of 

land for the tree fruit and small fruit work on a ten-year lease at a rental 
sufficient  only to cover the general taxes ©f the land.  The land that we con 
sider the most desirable of the various pieces available is located on the old 
C.J.Monroe farm about one mile from the Experiment  Station property. 

Mr. L. C. Corbett, Chief of the office of the Horticultural Investi 
gations, offers to pay #1000 per j'ear on the salary of Mr. Stanley Johnston, 
the superintendent; to pay for such labor as may be necessary  in handling the 
nursery stock work, to furnish plants from time to time to add to the small 
fruit  collection, and to furnish the services of Mr. G. M* Darrow, for the 
scientific breeding work. 

Most of the work  on this new property  could be handled for .the same 

overhead as is now necessary for the work on the Experiment  Station grounds, and 
I believe that with the help that Mr. Corbett has offered us, we could handle 
this acreage for about $1000 per year in addition to our present Experiment 
Station budget, half of which would be used for labor and half for supplies 
and miscellaneous expenses. 

She necessity for more room to carry on the work of the Experiment 
Station and the desirability  of initiating some experimental work with small 
fruits and of offering the proper facilities for the nursery stock investiga 
tions, leads me to recommend to the State Board of Agriculture that we be 
allowed to enter into contracts with Mr. L. C. Corbett, representing the U, S. 
Department  of Agriculture and Mr. Wm. McEwing of South Haven in behalf of the 
fruit growers in that section, to take over this property and. carry on the 
work as outlined.

On motion of Mr. Doelle, the resignation ofW. J•Kurtz as Assistant 

in Farm Management, was accepted effective Sept. 30th. 

On motion of Mr. Wat kins, the following temporary  classification of 

the departments in the Division of Applied  Science and the Division of Letters, 

was adopted:

On motion of Mr. Doelle, the president was requested to appoint a 

committee of three to confer with him regarding the adjustment  of salaries 

where  contracts have not been signed or where  appeals  have been made, and 

also to consider the matter of extension of time in the case of certain em 

ployes, formal report to be made to the Secretary.

of Cornell University,  Oct. 20th.
