Dear Sir:- I beg leave to present to the Board of Agriculture, through you, .the following communication; Communica tion from Dean Bissell in regard"to changing the name of the a ^11 in which the name and purpose-s of the college shall be expressly set College* In as much as the Board contemplates presenting to the Legislature i forth, I ask that the Board consider the advisability of changing the legal style of the college and suggest that the proposed bill provide that the coir- lege be designated as the "Michigan State College of Agriculture and Mechanic : Arts." The principal arguments in favor of a change in name are, briefly;tion of ment in 1885 to its present importance as indicated by'an.enrollment of 4S0 !Dean Bissell (a) The growth of the engineering. TTork from its formal establishj-in regard tc changing the ;name of the : college. students, a corps of 21 teachers giving their entire'time to engineering sub- 'Communica- 'jects and a large and valuable building and apparatus equipment• (b) : The attainments, and ..standing : of the engineering graduates ; as set forth in the alnmni records and in the applications for professional degrees which are conferred on the basis cf successful engineering work after ; graduation/ (c) The promotion of the esprit du corps of the student body which would follow the proposed change/ (d) The prevalence of the recognition given to engineering by other Land Grant Colleges in their legal designations. The records show that j out of 24 institutions not consolidated with state universities and offering four year courses in engineering, only 8 are designated simply "agricultural colleges" or "colleges of agriculture". (e) The general propriety of the change when all the conditions ; are weighed and the above arguments admitted as well based. Respectfully submitted, G. ¥. B i s s e l l .' :•• ;':<;:/.'
