MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES April 10, 1961 Present: Dr. Smith, Chairman; Messrs. Harlan, Huff, Merriman, Stevens, Vanderploeg: Dr. Bartlett; President Hannah, Treasurer May and Secretary Breslin. Absent: No one 1. The Board assembled in special meeting called to consider the crisis developing from the recommendation of the Appropriations Committee of the State Senate reducing the proposed appropriation from $37,586,732 asked for by the Board, and the $31,509,000 recommended "by the Governor, to the $29,677,219- After discussion of the facts and a. report on proposed action "being taken by other agencies of the State Government, the President asked the Trustees for direction and advice as to the course to be followed by the officers and staff of the University. On motion by Mr. Stevens, seconded by Mr. Vanderploeg, it was unanimously voted to instruct the officers and staff of the University to use all the resources of the University in an attempt to restore the appropriations bills to at least the figures recoinmended by the Governor. 2. The President asked the Board as to what his answer should be to the proposals that have been made that he consider the possibility of being a candidate for the Constitutional Convention representing the senatorial district of which East Lansing is a part. After discussion, on motion by Mr. Stevens, seconded by Mr. Merriman, it was unanimously voted to urge President Hannah to become a candidate for the Constitutional Convention. The Trustees further stated that it is their opinion that President Hannah's candidacy will encourage other leading citizens of this State to also run for election to the Constitutional Convention.
