MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING BOARDS OF TRUSTEES of MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY and MICHIGAN COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE April 17; 1970 The two Board of Trustees met at Kellogg Center at 7:30 a.m. Present: Representing MSU - Trustees Hartman, Huff, Martin, Merriman, Nisbet, and Stevens; President Wharton, Provost Cantlon, Acting Vice President Wilkinson, Executive Vice President and Secretary Breslin, Vice President Perrin, Assistant to the President Ballard, Attorney Carr, Director Knisely, and Dean Byerrum Representing the Osteopathic College - Messrs. Angott,Brooker, Butler, Harden, L'Hote, Kropschot, Magen, Moore, Murphy, Patenge, Stoutenburg, and Wilmont The Board of Trustees of Michigan State University and members of the Board of Trustees of the Michigan College of Osteopathic Medicine met for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on April 17, followed by a meeting designed to bring both Boards up to date on previous actions and future plans for the affiliation of the Michigan College of Osteopathic Medicine with MSU. President Wharton welcomed the representatives of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and then asked Executive Vice President Breslin to chair the meeting. Mr. Breslin reviewed for the group the previous legislative action relative to the Michigan College of Osteo- pathic Medicine, the position statement of the Michigan State University Board of Trustees, the action by the State Board of Education, and meetings held with the Finance Committee of the Legislature relative to a supplemental appropriation from the Legislature for the Osteopathic College for 1969-70, plus a budget request for the College for the school year 1970-71.;;:' "' , :"" .;:; ."'.::; :.;:" ;"'!'.;"'.-.:::-::" ••• ^ '•[ ' :"' /: ;:•" : ": •;" •" :;:: , . .-:: [•] ^ "•' V" ::: r, - Breslin further informed the group of the current plans for phasing out the instructional programs at the Pontiac site and transferring them to the East Lansing campus. Mr. John L'Hote, President of the Board of Trustees of the Michigan College of Osteopathic Medicine, indicated approval of the planning to date. Provost Cantlon of Michigan State University brought the group up to date on the status of the selection of a dean for the College and outlined the problem MSU faces in terms of space for the Osteopathic College. Dr. Edgar Harden, Education Consultant for the Michigan College of Osteopathic Medicine, indicated he was pleased with all of the progress made to date. It was agreed that a small committee of approximately 10 people (5 MSU and 5 MCOM) should be appointed to work out additional details for the final affiliation of Michigan State University and the Michigan College of Osteopathic Medicine.
