YOUNG  WOMEN'S  CHRISTIAN 

ASSOCIATION 

"Not  by  might,  nor  by  power,  but  by  my 

spirit,  saith  the  Lord  of  hosts." 

Such  is  our  motto  and  we  use  it  as  a 
greeting  and  a  foreword  to  all  new  stu 
dents.  Through  it our Association  has  de 
veloped  until  it  is  in  better condition  than 
ever  before. 
Its  ·membership  consists  of 
the  women  students  and  members  of  the 
facu lty  resident  in  the  Women's  building. 
YOU  will  be  asked  to  join.  We  need  you. 
You  need  us.  Plan  to  attend  our 
first 
meeting.  You  cannot  afford  to  negle c t 
this  part  of  your  education. 

The  regular  meeting,  led  by  the  girls 
or  once  in  a  while  by  some  outside  speak 
er,  is  held  every  Thursday  evening  from 
6:30  to  .7:30· in  the  recitation  room  of  the 
Women' s  building. 

'Every  Sunday  eveping  a  meeting Is  held 
in  conjunction  with  the  Y.  M .  C.  A.  in  the . 
auditorium  of  the  People's  church.  These 
meetings  are  addressed  by  some  person 
outside  the  student  body. 

The  work  of  the  Y.  W.  C.  A.  does  not 
only  consist  in  the  maintenance  of  these 
meetings.  Occasionally  a· social  event  is 
given  In  order  to  further  acquaintance 
ship  among  the  girls  and  provide  enter 
tainment  which  might  otherwise  b e  lack 
ing. 

Bible  and  Mission  Study. 
Bible  a nd  Mission  classes  are  held  dur 
ing  the  year,  and  these  you  will  be  asked 
to  join.  Should  you  do  so ,  you  will  find

these  numerals  have  been  awarded  by  the 
athletic  council  upon  the  recommendation 
or  the  class. 
·  II.  Each  and  every  freshman  and  sub 
!reshman  shall  wear  at  all  times  during 
the  fall  and  spring  terms,  except  on  Sun 
day,  caps  of  the  following  description:  For 
freshmen ,  an  official  brown  cap  with  a 
small  visor  and  a  green  button,  (amend 
ed,  that  present  freshmen  caps  may  be 
worn  for  remainder  of  this  year);  for  sub 
freshmen,  a  gray cap  with  a  black  button. 
They  shalr not  at any  time  in  college  wear 
a  pin .representing their  preparatory school 
In  any  manner,  nor  shall  they  wear  any 
emblem  or  Insignia  of  that  Institution. 

III.  "Student  night"  shall  be  the  last 
Thursday  night  of  the  spring  term,  when

IV.  No  freshman  or  sub-freshman  shall

V.  There  shall  be  no  hazing.  Occa -

STUDENTS'  ORGANIZATIONS. 

Alpha  Zeta-In  1902  a  c hapter  Qf  the  Al 
pha  Zeta  fraternity  was  installed  at  the 
college.  It  is  the  aim  of  the  fraternity  to 
honor  students  who  have  distinguished 
themselves  In  agricultural  studies . 
Tau  Beta  Pl-The  Tau  Beta  Pi 

a 
national  honorary  engineering  fraternity 
with  chapters  in  the  larger  universities 
and  colleges  throughout  the  United  States. 
Its  object  Is  to  further  liberal  engineering 
education  and  help  bring  it  to  a  higher 
standard  in  all  Its  phases.  The  Michigan 
Alpha  chapter at  this  college  was  the  first 
chapter  formed  after  the  fraternity  was 
founded  at  Lehigh  university.

Omicron  Nu-The  Alpha  chapter  of  an 
honorary  fraternity  for  home  economics 
students  was  organized  last  year.  With 
the  high  standards  the  fraternity  has  set 
for  its  members,  the  Omlcron  Nu  is  an  or 
ganization  that  will  make 
influence 
widely  felt  in  the  country  before  many 
years  are  passed.

College  Glee  Club- A  Glee  club  is  main 
tained  under  the  direction  of  Prof.  Killeen . 
A  number  of  concerts  are  given  through 
out  the  year  and  several  trips  made 
to 
the  surrounding  towns. 

College  Band-The  students  maintain  a 
musical  association  known  as  the  College 
band,  in  charge  of  the  military  depart 
ment. 

Debating  Club-The  Debating  club  holds 
weekly  meetings  during  the  college  ses 
sions,  the  main  feature  of  eacl1  program 
being  a  debate  between  members  select 
ed  by  the  club.  , For  several  years  a  de 
bate  has  been  held  with  the  Ypsilanti 
normal  during  the  spring  term. 

Farmers'  Club-The  Farmers'  club  is  a 
society  composed  of  agricultural  students, 
having·  for  its  object  the  study  and  dis 
cussion  of  practical  up  to  date  questions 
in  agriculture. 
It  was  organized  Dec.  6, 
1899.

Bible  Study. 
We  believe  that  a  practical  knowledge 
of  the  Bible  is  a  necessary  part  of  a  stu 
dent's  education,  as  well  as  a  source  of 
moral  and spiritual  strength.  It is  a  true 
ism  that  your  Bible  will  aid  you  more  if 
you  know  it  than  if you  don't. 

Classes  will  be  organized  at  the  begin 
ning  of  the  fall  term.  Every  student 
is 
urged  to  join  one  of  these  c lasses  and 
take  up  an  active  and  consistent  course 
in  the  study  of  the  greatest  book  of  the 
times. 

Missions 
During  the  winter  term  it  is  intended  to 
take  up  mission  study.  Classes  will  be 
co nducted  in  the  progress  of  Christianity 
in  foreign  lands.  The  recent  Chinese  revo 
lution  will  be  made  a  special  object  of 
study.  You  will  find  these  classes  of  great 
interest  and  value. 

Socia I 
As  a  social  organ,  the  Y.  M.  C.  A.  aims 
to  fill  the  need  evidenced  by  those  not  ac  
corded  the  privileges  of  a  literary  society. 
By  holding  a  joint  social  affair  with  the 
Y.  W.  C.  A.  every  term,  an  opportunity  is 
given  to  every  M.  A.  C.  student  to  enjoy 
that  factor  which  Is  lacking  in  so  many 
a  college  career,  an  acquaintance  with  the 
other  sex.  Also  a  number  of  stag  parties 
are  held  during the year,  at which  the  men 
are  gathered  for  a  good  time  and  to  get 
acquainted. 

Remember  the  stag  reception  for  the 
new  men  the  first  Friday  evening  of  the 
fall  term;  a lso  the  joint  reception  of  the 
Y.  M.  and  Y.  W.  C.  A.  on  the.  second 
Friday  evening. 

Our  Rooms 
The  Y.  M.  C.  A.  rooms  are  located  In 
the  northwest  corner  of  Williams  Hall. 
They  consist  of  a  reading  and  assembly 
room,  and  also  a n  office.  The  reading 
room  is  .always  open  and  furnishes  an 
excellent  place  for  study.  There  is  a lso 
a 
telephone,  piano.  e t c.,  for  the  use  of 
a nyone  at  any  time.

8:00  a.  m.  to  4:00  p.  m.  You  are  at  lib 
erty  to  come  here  for  information  or  ad

Hospital  Committee 
The  Y.  M.  C.  A .  is  for  the  good  of  the 
students.  We  believe  in  doing  good  when 
people  are  well  and  also  when  they  are 
sick.  During  the  past  year  we  have  en 
deavored  to  visit  the  sick  In  the  hospitals 
and  remember  them  with 
flowers  or 
otherwise. 

Th is  year,  Bibles  are  to  be  placed  in 
the  hospitals  for  the  use  o!  the  patients. 
The  easiest  way  to  win  the  heart  of  a 
man  is  to  do  him  some  kindness,  especial 
ly  when  he  is  s ick  or  in  trouble.  That 
is  the  very  aim  o!  this  branch  o!  our  or 
ganization.

The  annual  summer  Con!erence  was 
held  at  Lake  Geneva  last  year.  M.  A.  C. 
was  represented  by  a  delegation.  These 
conferences  are  one  of  the  greatst  fac 
tors  in  stimulating  an  active  Interest  In 
Christian  work.  We  hope  to  send  even 
a  still  larger  delegation  next  year.
