STATE  BOARD  OF  AGRICULTURE 

The  governing  board  of  the  College,  known  as 
the  State  Board  of  Agriculture,  consists  of  six 
members, 
two  of  whom  are  elected  every  two 
years.  This  13oard  meets  once  a  month,  the  usual 

time  being  the

REGISTRATION 

New  students  should  ban  their  high  school 
credits  sent  to  the  Registrar's  office  as  early  as 
possible  in  the  summer.  1 £  the  credits  arc  satis 
factory,  an  admission  card  is  mailed  to  the  appli 
cant. 

The  student  should  present  himself,  with  admis 
sion  card,  on  Registration  Day  (  ept.  15,  1925,  for 
new  students;  Sept.  18  a11d  19,  1925, 
for  old 
students)  at  Room  109,  Agricultural  Building,  !or 
Registration.  After  registering,  the  student  pro 
ceeds 
the  Library 
Building,  where  lees  are  paid 
(See  Schedule  of 
Fees  on  page  12).  He  then  goes  to  his  proper

The  first  week  of  the  fall  term  is  set  apart  for 
Hegist ration; 
in  the  winter  and  spring  terms  all 
students  register  on  the  first  Monday  of  the  term. 
Students  must  report  to  class  advisers  on  those 
days  for  class  assignments,  or  receive  unexcused 
ahsences  (sec  under  "Absences"  on  page  17). 

Office  hours  on  registration  days  shall  be  from 

8:00  to  12 :00  and  from  l  :00  to  5 :00. 

Late  Registration  and  Classification.  A  student 
who  appears  for  registration  after  the  regularly  aP· 
pointed  date  (See  Calendar)  should  report  at  the 
office  of  the  Registrar,  Old  Library  Building.  A£te1·

Late  Registration.  No  student  in  the  freshmen 
yc:ar  may  be  admitted  to  classification  in  any  of 
the  four-year  courses  later  than  the  close  or  the 
third  week  of  a  term;  other  students  not  later  than 
the  close  of  the  fourth  week.

Students  are  g ranted 
special  classification  only  when  unusual  circum· 
stances  or  the  age  and  experience  of  the  applicant

be  taken.

Class  Rank.  Students  will  be  promoted  from

Excess  Credits.  Students  ordinarily  a re  requi red 
to  register  for  sixteen  academic  credits  per  term 
with  a  maximum  o[  eighteen  and  a  minimum  of 
fourteen  credits,  at 
the  class 
adviser.  If  for  any  reason  a  student  wishes  to  clas 
sify  [or  more  than  eighteen  or  Jess  than  fourteen 
credits,  such  request  must  be  made  i11  writing  for 
consideration  by  the  class  adviser  and  the  Dean  of 
the  Division.

Dropping  Subjects.  A  student  must  not  drop  a 
subject  except  by  permission  o[  his  class  adviser 
and  the  head  of  the  department  concerned. 
In 
case  such  permission  is  granted  and  the  subject  is 
dropped  before  the  close  o[  the  firs t  four  weeks 
(five  weeks  in 
the  case  of  a  Freshman)  of  the 
term,  no  grade  will  be  reported;  afte r  that  time 
a  grade  of  "F"  will  be  reported  in  the  subject, 
except  in  a  case  of  illness  or  other  cogent  reason 
when  upon  written  request  a  committee  may  grant 
that  the  grade  of  "Inc."  or  no  grade  may  be  re 
ported.  All  grades  of  "Inc."  must  be  verified 
by  the  Registrar. 

Changes  in  Schedules.  All  changes  o[  schedules 
must  be  authorized  through  the  R egistrar's  office. 

Definition  of  Credit.  A  credit  consists  of  one 
lecture  or  recitation  or  one  two-hour  o r  three  
hour

Agricultural  Course.  The  first  two  years  of  the 
course  consist  of  required  work.  During 
the 
junior  and  senior  years  the  student  must  complete 
a  minimum  of  28  credits  of  technical  work,  with 
a  maximun1  of  45  allowed.  Fourteen  of 
these 
credits  must  be  in  some  one  series.  The  remainder 
of  the  work  is  elective.

Forestry  Course.  The  first

except  in  the winter  and  spring  terms  of  the  second 
year,  where  Forestry  subjects  take  the  place  of 
Av;ricultt1re.  At  the  close  of  the  second  year  at· 
tendance  at  a  four-weeks'  summer  camp  in  north 
ern  Michigan  is  required.  One-half  of  the  work 
of  the  Junior  year  and  three.fourths  of  that  of 
the  Senior  year  is  prescribed,  and  the  remainder 
elective. 

Engineering  Courses.  The  first  year  is  identical 
for  all  courses  in  Engineering.  During  the  second 
year  specialization  in  the  different  branches-Civil, 
Chemical ,  Electrical  and  Mechanical  Engineering, 
and  Engineering  Administration-begins  and  con· 
tinues  through  the  remainder  of  the  course. 
In 
the  last  year  the  courses  in  Civil,  Electrical  ancl 
~fechanical Engineering  offer  several  options  which 
permit  of  high  specialization. 

Home  Economics  Courses.  All  work  in  Home 
Economics  is  identical  during  the  first  year,  and, 
to  a  great  extent,  during  the  second  year.  At  the 
opening  of  the  Junior  year  the  student  selects  some 
particular  branch  for  specialization. 

Veterinary  Medicine.  This  course  is  prescribed 

throughout  the  four  years. 

Applied  Science  Course.  The  first  year  of  this

Non-Resident  Fee.  A 

t uition  fee  of  $15.00  a 
term  is  charged  to  those  whose  legal  residence  is 
in  another  state  or  country.  The  burden  of  regis· 
tering  under  proper  residence  is  placed  upon  t1ie 
student.  Should  a  question  arise  as  to  his  legal 
residence.  the  mailer  should  be  taken  up  with  the 
Secretary  of 
the  College  and  adjusted  before 
registe r ing.  A  student  registering  improperly  sha!J, 
when  discovered,  be  required  to  pay  a  penalty  of 
$10  for  each  y~ar so  registered,  aside  from  the  re 
quired  fee.

EXAMINATIONS 

Examinations  arc  given 

in  all  subjects  at  the 
close  of  the  term.  A  schedule  of  ex:i.min:itions  is

posted  in  the  Old  Library  Building  during  the  week 
preceding  examination  week. 

Special  Examinations  for  the  removal  o(  condi 
tions  and  for  advanced 
landing  are  given  on  the 
first  Saturctay  of  each  term  and  at  no  other  time 
except  by  permission  of  the  Faculty.  Examinations 
tudents  who  have  received  the  grade  of  "In

is 
completed.  A  permit  for  all  special  examinations 
should  be  secured  at  the  Registrar's  office.  A 
fee  or  $1.00  is  required  for  special  examinations  to 
remove  conditions. 

Former  students  not  in  attendance,  may  take 
special  examinations  by  paying  the  specified  fee 
of  $2.50  per  credit  hour. 

Entrance  Examinations.  These  may  be  taken 
either  at  the  close  of  the  school  year  in  June,  or 
during  the  week  preceding  the  opening  of  College 
in 
the  fall.  An  applicant  may  take  part  of  his 
examinations  at  either  period  but  will  be  expected 
to  finish  all  of  them  within  a  year.

from  the  Registrar's  office.

Grade  Point  System.  The  following  resolution 
was  adopted  by  the  Faculty  on  September  11th, 
1920:

Conditions  and  Failures. 

,Required  subjects  in 
which  a  grade  of  "F"  is  received  must  be  repeated 
in  class.  Exceptions  to  this  rule  may  be  made 
only  when  the  student  satisfies  the  Department 
concerned  that  he  has.  by  tutoring  or  otherwise, 
met  all  requirements,  when  he  may  petition  the 
Faculty  for  a  special  examination.  A  condition 
(X)  may  be  removed  by  a  special  exalllination  at 
one  of  the  reg ula r  periods  (see  under  Examina· 
tioos) ,  provided  it  is  taken  before  the  subject  is 
repeated  in  course.  After  that  time  the  condition 
becomes  a  failure  aod  may  only  be  removed  as 
stated  above.

Entrance  Conditions.  A  student  permitted  to 
enter  conditionally  will  be  reqllired  to  remove  such 
conditions  within  three  years. 
If  lhe  conditions 
are  "general''  he  must  take  five  extra  credits  for 
each  unit. 

Unsatisfactory  Work.  A  student  whose  work 
proves  unsatisfactory  may  be  warned,  placed  on 
probation,  or  requested  to  withdraw  from  college. 
If placed  on  probation,  he  is  not  permitted  to  par 
ticipate  in  any  extra-curricular  activities. 

Substitutions.  The  matter  of  substitution  of 
credits  is  placed  in  the  hands  of  committees  made 
up  of  the  Dean  of  each  Division  and  the  heads  of 
the  two  departments  interested. 

Requests  for  substitutiot1  of  one  subject  for  an 
other  should  be  made  before  the  term  in  which 
the  subject  for  which  substitution  is  asked  occurs 
in  course. 

Statement  of  Credits.  A  statement  of  credits 
may  be  secured  from  the  Registrar's  office  at  any 
time  except  during  Registratioii.  week.  A  student 
may  receive  one  copy  of  his  cr edits  free  of  charge. 
Additional  copies  are  one  dollar  each. 

REQUIREMENTS  FOR  GRADUATION 

A  candidate  for  graduation  must  have  completed 
the  required  work  of  any  cour.:;e.  and  have  a 
total  of  at 
least  192  academic  credits  and  six 
credits  in  Physical  Education.  Twelve  credits  in 
Military  Science  are

ABSENCES 

Attendance  at  every  class  or  laboratory  period  is 

expected  of  each  student. 

In  each  Division  a  member  of  the  Faculty  acts 
as  Excusing  Officer.  All  absences  from  class  are

and  a  student  who  bas  been  absent  from  class  for

The  following  regulations  fo r  control  of  absences 
were  adopted  by  the  Faculty  September  11th,  1920: 
That  one  negative  credit  be  imposed  for  every 
six  unexcused  absences  caused  by  ]ate  registration, 
or  occurring  during  Registration  Week  subsequent 
to  registration. 

For  absences  (1)  Due  to  leaving  College  before 
the  end  of  the  term  without  formal  withdrawal  or

dismissal;  (2)  On  the  working  half  days  preceding 
nn<l  following  authorized  holidays;  (3)  Incurred  by 
l)articipation  in  unauthorized  holidays:  One  nega 
tive  credit  £or  every  six  absences. 

For  casual  absences,  negative  credits  may  be  im 
posed  by  the  Excusing  Officer  at  the  rate  of  from

collegiate  contest  who  has  ever  been  guilty 
of  professionalism  in  athletics. 

No  person  who  receives  any  compensa· 
tion  from  the  institution  for  services  ren· 
dered  by  way  0£  regular  instruction  shall 
be  allowed  lo  play  on  any  team;  but  labora-

tory  assistants  or  men  holding  analogous 
positions  shall  not  be  barred  by  this  rule. 

Number  of  Games  on  Schedule 

(a)  The  football  schedule  may  not  exceed  eight 
regular  games.  The  total  absence  from  recitation 
for  the  sport  shall  not  exceed  five  days. 

(b)  The  baseball  schedule  may  not  exceed  eigh 
ken  regular  games.  The  total  absence  from  reci 
tation  for  the  sport  shall  not  exceed  five  days. 

(c)  The  basketball  schedule  shall  not  exceed 
sixteen  games.  The  total  absence  !rom  recitation 
for  the  sport  shall  not  exceed  five  days. 

Time  of  Games 

Athletic  games  are  forbidden  at  any  time  be 
lo;·c  4  p.  m.  except  on  Saturdays  and  holidays. 

MILITARY  TRAINING 

The  Military  work  ol  the  College  is  organized  as 
a  unit  ol  the  Reserve  Officers'  Training  Corps,  and 
includes  Infantry,  Cavalry  and  Coast  Artillery. 
The  work  is  required  during  the  first  two  years  ol 
college  o[  all  male  students  who  are  physically  fit. 
Th•  third  and  fourth  years  are  elective. 

Military  Uniform.  This  consists  of  woolen  coat, 
breeches,  cap,  flannel  shirt,  web  belt  and  canvas 
leggings,  and  is  secured  by  making  a  deposit  with 
the  Secretary  at  the  time  of  paying  lees  in  the 
fall.  The  amount  of  this  deposit  in  the  year  1925-26 
will  be  $5.00.  This  is  subject  to  change  by  the 
War  Department. 

Exemptions  from  Military Training :  Men  thirty 
five  years  of  age  or  over;  men  having  families  of  a

is  required  to  take  M.  S.  1 ·6  unless  excused  as 
provided  above. 

Credit  for  Military  Service.  Men  who  performed 
mi!itary  or  naval  service  as  commissioned  officers 
shall  be  held  for  184  academic  credits  instead  of 
192  for  graduation. 

Men  who  performed  military  or  naval  service 
in  capacities  other  than  as  commissioned  officers 
shall  be  heltl  for  186  academic  credits  for  grad 
t•ation. 

Jn  order  to  secure  this  credit,  some  evidence  of 
service,  such  as  an  honorable  discharge,  shall  be 
presented  at  the  office  o[  the  Registrar  with  the 
request  for  credit.

THE  BAND 

The  Band  is  under  (be  direction  o[  the  Director 
of  Music,  but  is  a  part  of  the  Military  organiza· 
tion.  Those  taking  this  work  are  permitted  to  sub· 
stitute  it  for  either  physical  training  or  military 
science  during  the  freshman  and  sophomore  years. 
In  the  junior  and  senior  years,  two  credits  a  term 
are  given. 

THE  STUDENT  COUNCIL 

The  Student  Council  shall  be  composed  of  six 
members,  three  from  the  Senior  class,  two  from 
the  Sophomore 
the  Junior  class,  and  one  from 
class.  The  Council  members  shall  be  electecl  by 
their  respective  classes  at  the  general  election,  at 
least  two  weeks  before  the  close  of  the  winter 
term  of  the  year  previous  to  their  term  of  office. 
These  new  men  shall  attend  all  meetings  of  the 
old  council  during  the  spring  term  and  take  their 
office  the  next  foll  term.  Vacancies  shall  be  filled 
by  their  respective  classes .
