Interview with George Lauff
George Lauff came to study at MSU but was only able to stay for one year before he was drafted and served in the Philippines. He returned to campus to complete a BS in 1949, followed by an MS in 1951. Lauff earned his PhD from Cornell in limnology, the study of fresh water, and minored in oceanography and invertebrate zoology. In 1964 he joined the MSU faculty as Director of the W K Kellogg Gull Lake Biological Station, a post he held until returning to academic duties and special projects in 1989. Lauff served as secretary of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography and was a member of the International Society of Theoretical and Applied Limnology as well as several other national and regional scientific organizations dealing with the ecology of natural waters. He served as consultant for and received research grants from numerous national foundations and commissions. Lauff retired from MSU in 1991.
