Marvin Zalman was born on January 9, 1942 in Bronx, New York, son of Harry and Violet (Bar David) Zalman. He earned hi bachelors from Cornell University in 1963. He earned his Juris Doctor from the Brooklyn Law School in 1966. He completed his masters (1971) and Ph. D. (1977) from the State University of New York . He was a lecturer and Peace Corps vounteer in Nigeria before joing MSU in 1971 through 1980 in the Criminal Justice Department. He began work at Wayne State University 1980 in the Criminal Justice department and as its chair. Other activities included the Michigan Felony Sentencing Project (1978-1979, New york State Comittee on Sentecning Guidlines (1984) and the Michigan State Bar Prison and Corrections Committee (1976-1984).
