The Bubble (Serial 172)

The Bubble is the first-known student publication on the Michigan State campus. It was an outgrowth of a series of bulletins written during the previous term. It was published in 1868 by Frank S. Burton, Class of 1868. A total of seven issues of The Bubble were created.

The Bubble was intended to be a humorous look at campus life. As editor, Burton identified himself as "Hezekiah Z. Solemnstyle." The students who worked on The Bubble identified themselves as "The Stoical Pen Yankers' Society."

The Bubble contained short articles, poems, and notices of events around campus. There was substance to the articles, though their tone was often satirical or humorous. There were observations of lectures, books, and the evils of smoking. The publication also took great joy in insulting neighboring communities. After Burton graduated The Bubble ceased to exist. It would be 13 more years before another student publication appeared on campus.
