I reflect back to January at th e M ichigan Turf Conference Research. One to p ic o f great interest was how to keep our enviro n m e n t safe while m aintain ing high standards o f tu rf quality. The updated research is strong and interesting. The study o f g roundw ater contam ination is one research project th a t can provide g o lf course superintendents w ith inform ation to answer many o f th e questions being asked by o u r clients. W ith th e use o f fo u r m onolith drainage lysim eters constructed by th e research team , it was shown th a t less than 20 percent o f nitrogen applied to th e tu rf grass plant ever reaches below th e th atch layer. The nitrogen th a t is present in th e soil is largely organic and m ust be considered im m obile; however, it is available to th e plant. The am ount o f leachate fo u n d was less than .01 percent o f nitrogen content. The turfgrass plant, consisting o f chipping, verdure and thatch, uses 100 percent o f all n itro gen applied. The potential exposure to golfers and g o lf course m aintenance personnel was another interesting point. Using daconel 2787, th e research status o f seven body parts w ere tested. Four were below lim its, and th e highest levels were detected on th e hands. Reading in m illigram s/hour, a m easurem ent o f .1160 was fo u n d — well below standards. Also, virtually no risk o f inhalation was fo u n d to either golfers or m aintenance crew workers. A nother very interesting and innovative study fro m one o f o u r peers is being researched at th e M eadows Club at Grand Valley State University. A lthough the course was n o t yet under construction, S uperintendent Kathy Antaya began studying th e w ater quality o f th re e sources entering and leaving th e property. She has com piled good info rm a tio n and is continuing th e study while p e rfo rm ing everday m aintenance program s on th e newly constructed course. These th re e exam ples o f research being conducted in Michigan proves th a t today's g o lf course m anagers are very involved and extrem ely interested in pre serving o u r beautiful environm ent. A Patch of Green • 8 • March/April 1995 Superintendents A re Becoming Computer Literate by Mike Plague It can cause more anxiety than a stretch of hot, humid August days and nights. But a growing number of superintendents are tackling the challenge of becoming "computer literate" and reaping the rewards. "I think everyone should have a computer," says Kevin Dushane of Bloomfield Hills Country Club. "It's a great management tool if used correctly," echoes Jim Timmerman of Orchard Lake Country Club. Personal computers still were relatively new and expensive when Dushane, Timmerman and a handful of other Border Cities superintendents first started using them in their offices some eight years ago. But the growth of computer-controlled irrigation systems and the continued drop in the price of com puter equipment has spurred a dramatic increase in the number of superintendents now using computers. "For not being a computer buff, I was surprised how much I had started to depend on it," says Steve Kolongowski, who gave up his computer when he moved from Washtenaw Country Club to The Captain's Club last season. "If you don't use the computer, you can't maintain efficiency within your operation," says Jerry Faubel, Saginaw Country Club superintendent. Faubel has automated nearly every aspect of his organization in the seven years since he has been using a computer. In addition to the most common applications, such as budgeting and inventory tracking, Faubel has imple mented more advanced uses, including: • Computer-aided design (CAD) drawings of the entire course, including drainage and irrigation layouts • An electronic tim e clock system which records employee hours and computes payroll information as employees punch in and out with credit card ID badges. "The value of the com puter becomes greater as more information is gathered," Faubel explains. Quick access to information is often cited by superintendents as the greatest benefit of com puteri zation. "It's a big filing system fo r me," says John Nowakowski of Great Oaks Country Club, a computer novice until three years ago. "If l want certain informa tion, I can find it right away w ithout searching through file cabinets." When it comes to communicating information, the spell checking, grammar checking and desktop pub lishing capabilities of software programs can be invalu able. "I think it (computer) gives me a better profes sional image with my superiors," says Mike Jones of Continued on page 11 TheProfetsl£°“rse !ssionar.RO OR5 nrAiNS® TURF* VOLTAGE CAL LISTS >LF®CITIES* ACTORS* ERS*SAW«AIR DEES* RF®MOWER5® 5®¥RAILERS*CUSHMAN® MOWERS® FOUNTAINS® DIFFUSED AIR®SPARTAN DISTRlBl!TORS*TORO*TORO IRRIGAT!ON®SERVIC£*PARTS SPARTAN DISTRIBUTORS, INC. Last year, the flowers began to bloom around July 1 in my newly planted sites. By mid-July, full bloom! My plots established in previous years were in full bloom by mid-May. In the autumn, when the flowers are dried and frail, chop the plants down to a height of 4-6 inches. This allows seed dispersal from the annuals and allows sufficient sunlight to penetrate the seedlings next year. The perennials you planted will begin to flower next year as well. By following the correct procedures in site selection, soil preparation, choice of seed mixtures and planting, you will enjoy a magnificent array of color all summer long, with minimal maintenance. Since then, Weingartz, with locations in Farmington Hills and Utica, has grown to become Michigan's largest lawn, snow and outdoor power equipment dealer. Over the years, the products have changed to meet customers' needs, yet the original com m itm ent to quality products and excellent customer service have not. In its third generation, family remains an im portant part of Weingartz's success. Ray Weingartz, Jr. took over the leadership reins 25 years ago, and much of his family is very involved in the business. Ray's fou r sons, one of his daughters and two sons-in- law play an active role in the everyday operations of the business. The Weingartz family, nevertheless, is just a small part of the fam ily of employees at Weingartz. Currently, there are approximately 80 full-tim e employees, many of whom have been with the com pany fo r 15 or more years. With such a large family involvement and many longtime employees, Ray always has felt that a big key to success is plan ning and com m itm ent. So, after many years of planning and researching locations and layouts, a dream was brought to reality in March 1992 in Farmington Hills when Weingartz added its sec ond location. This state-of-the-art, 42,000-square-foot facility includes a spacious 11,000 square feet of showroom. The show room's wide array of equipment reflects the company's broad customer base—a mix of 55% residential, 45% commercial. In addition to the showroom, there also is a 4,000-square-foot parts area, a 12,000-square-foot basement/warehouse and a 4,000- square-foot service area. With this type of facility, Weingartz stands poised to offer their customers the very best in service, selection and value. In 1995—their 50th anniversary year—Weingartz manage m ent and employees are celebrating by making a genuine recom m itm ent to make the extra efforts necessary to satisfy their customers. One of the big ways that Weingartz plans to offer more to their customers involves a complete remodeling and expansion of the Utica store, beginning this summer, so it will match the modern, state-of-the-art stature of their other build ing in Farmington Hills.
