The board recently received notification from the G. C. S. A. A. about an opportunity for eight chapters to receive office computer software and training through a seminar to be held at national headquarters. Certain minimum requirements for computer hardware need to be met and the board voted in favor of upgrading our computer systems if our chapter is chosen to participate in the program. After setup and training is complete, these chapters will be "on-line" with G.C.S.A.A. computers and the wealth of information they have available. The software and seminar are free of charge for the chosen "test chapters" and it is hoped that enough information will be gathered to ultimately allow all affiliated chapters to enlist in the program. The board feels that by getting in on the ground floor our chapter may be able to offer our members information and services through the computer super highway that could be of great benefit. We will keep you apprised of our status as we wait to hear word sometime in February as to whether our chapter is chosen to participate. The Board is also investigating the best possible way to suryey class AA, A, B, and C members of our association at this time. In an effort to allow each Superintendent member input into how their association operates, it was decided that a survey would be required. The exact details of how the survey will be conducted are in the works, so be prepared to be contacted in the near future for your viewpoints on the association. Your participation is critical to make the survey a successful tool to guide leadership in the best direction for each member’s benefit. Please, respond to the survey as soon as you are contacted; we greatly need each member’s viewpoint. Our chapter has also received notification from G.C.S.A.A. that we have successfully completed all requirements for reaffiliation. We were one of the first half dozen or so to complete these requirements out of over 100 chapters nationwide! A tribute to our Executive Secretary, Kate Mason, and to the insight of past boards as to the importance of association business organization. The requirements are stringent and our chapter was able to meet them with very few problems, something we should all be proud of. The Board also voted this past year to take over operation of our Patch of Green magazine and publish it "in-nouse". Through a tremendous effort on the part of its editor, Tim Dorner, it has been a wonderful success. Tim employed the assistance of Kate Mason, and together they "hit the ground running" on the publication without missing a step. We should all be proud of the present status of this publication, but we should all also note that it takes each member’s input to make it even better. Write an article in the upcoming slower months, share your expertise and knowledge with your peers, and help to make the information contained in the newsletter all the more pertinent for each of us. Tim has done a great job, and you can make it easier on him by contributing information. Please, contact Tim and send him an article or personal information on yourself or other members that you feel other members would like to know. Through a great effort on behalf of the Golf Day "Big Event" committee and a large amount of member participation, our association was able to raise $30,000 for turf research and student scholarships on October 7, 1996. This is a tremendous amount of money, and just goes to show what member participation in our association can accomplish. All those who participated or donated to the cause should be extremely proud of our accomplishment. Thanks to the clubs that donated their facilities and to all of their staffs, and thanks to the committee for their hard work and determination. The majority of the dollars raised through the "Big Event" go to the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation to fund our professors at M.S.U., whose research helps us all grow finer turf for Michigan golfers to enjoy. I know that you have probably heard this before, but I will state it again: your association can only benefit you through your participation and involvement. Please re-examine this statement and ponder its implications before you act to judge or criticize the association. Each and every one of us can contribute in one way or another, and we must work to make it a useful part of our professional life. This is a call to arms to each and every superintendent member - get involved and make your association something to take pride in. Our condolences go out to his wife Jean and daughters Aimee and Heidi. Earl joined Michigan and Border Cities in 1956 while working as superintendent at Pine Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake. He was very active in association matters, a tireless volunteer and friend to many fellow superintendents. Earl retired from Sylvan Glen Golf Course in Troy, where he worked for 15 years. $ Clem Wolfrom reminisces about his dear friend, Earl: "Earl Prieskom, long-time friend of Bruce and mine and a charter member of White Pine National Golf Club, died recently after a very short illness. Earl comes from a long line of golf course people in the Detroit area. He was born and raised next to the Bush Hill Golf Club in Western Wayne County. After four years in the Navy during World War II, Earl became superintendent of Pine Lake Country Club. Following a long and rewarding career in golf, Earl retired from Sylvan Glen Golf Club in 1985. Earl and four of his brothers, three living, were the leaders in the golf business in this area for many years. Brother Bob, superintendent, retired from Western Golf and Country Club. Elmer retired as pro from Pine Lake Country Club and Harold retired as superintendent from Burroughs Farms Golf Club. Another brother, George, deceased, was manager of the Burroughs Farm complex until his death. Earl and I became close friends back in 1957, when we traveled to Louisville, Kentucky the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America convention. We both joined the organization the same day and were close ever since. to attend together Bruce and I were proud to have Earl as a charter member of our club. He was a dear friend and will be greatly missed." A Patch of Green - 7 - Winter Issue, 1996 A Patch of Green - 8 - Winter Issue, 1996 The Big Event October 7th marked the 31st year for The Big Event. This year’s participating courses included Forest Lake, Red Run, Bay Pointe and Tam O’Shanter, with the annual dinner and drawings being held at Bay Pointe. Temperatures in the 60’s with very little wind made it a great day for striking the ball. Once again, it was a great turnout, with 409 participants. $30,000 was raised for turf research and scholarships. All four courses were in fantastic shape. Hats off to Rick Murphy of Bay Pointe, Gary Thommes of Red Run, Fritz McMullin of Forest Lake and Mike Bay of Tam O’Shanter for all their hard work preparing their courses for the day. Great job, guys! After golf, all the participants went to Bay Pointe for the dinner and prize drawings. Thanks to the staff at Bay Pointe for the excellent meal and service. After the dinner many nice prizes were given away, including a 27" color TV, CD players, clock radios, golf clubs, gift certificates and several nice golf packages. Ten $500 winners were selected in the raffle and five $300 winners were selected in the 50/50 raffle. Thanks to Kathy Hilbert for selling $3,000 in 50/50 tickets. Nice work, Kathy! Also, a special thanks goes out to the donors of the door prizes and the Board of Directors of Red Run, Forest Lake, Tam O’Shanter and the owners of Bay Pointe for allowing us to use their courses for this important event. Their support helps make our event the largest turfgrass fundraiser in the state. The final and biggest "thank you" goes to the Big Event Committee for all their efforts and to Kate Mason for all her hard work and ideas that help make this event run smoothly and improve each year. If you have any ideas or suggestions that will help make this event better, seek out a committee or board member and pass along your suggestion. Better yet, get on the committee and be involved! Looking forward to your participation in 1997. ’■nMp A Patch of Green - 9 - Winter Issue, 1996 The Big Event 1996 Many Thanks to Our Sponsors and Prize Donors SPONSORS PRIZE DONORS Allingham Corp. Ellis, superintendent at Moravian Hills Country Club, has been designated a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. To become certified, a candidate must have five years experience as a golf course superintendent, be employed in that capacity and meet specific educational requirements of college credit or continuing educational units. The candidate must then pass an extensive six- hour examination covering all aspects of golf course management. As part of the certification process, it is required that two certified superintendents inspect the candidate’s facility. The attestors for Howard were Kevin Dushane, CGCS of Bloomfield Hills Country Club and Jane St. John, CGCS of Heather Hills. The dinner speaker this year is Patti Hathaway from Westerville, OH. She will also give an hour-long talk on Wednesday on "Managing Change with a Positive Attitude."
