At the time, when Ken was in this position, I got a kick out of his humor, but still thought to myself that it would be a good thing to be a "has been”. Good in the sense that for the most part, your volunteer duty has come to an end, you put in your time, did your best to lead and make difficult decisions. You could feel good knowing that you did your part to help the association succeed and it was now time to let the next guy take over. But now, being in this position for myself, I believe I may feel what I then imagined Ken may have been feeling; a sense of not wanting to let go of the involvement. To this day, I still don’t know if that is indeed what Ken was feeling, but I always had a hunch that it was. That hunch is now being bolstered by the fact that this is what I am now feeling, as hard as that is for me to believe. I can’t tell you the number of times in the last two years that I thought to myself "why”? Why did you get yourself into this position? Who are you to be making these decisions? Who are you to write and preach to people to get involved? Why do I have to explain myself and my actions to others who disagree. Why do I have to write another letter and let them know that they’re heard and respected? Why? Because you volunteered for it, that’s why Paul. I would tell myself: "you got yourself into this mess, now deal with it and quit your belly aching." And, more times than not, that is what I would do...deal with it. Deal with it and in turn learn with it. That is what I am getting at here. When you volunteerand become involved you learn. You learn to organize your schedule, you learn to deal more effectively with difficult people, you learn to speak in public without too much fear. You learn from your mistakes, you learn from your successes, you learn to deliberate, you learn to negotiate, you learn to be more open to others’ feelings and ideas. YOU LEARN A LOT. Good and bad, glad and sad, when you volunteer your time and become involved, you learn. I wouldn’t trade my six years on the Board of this association for all the green at Augusta. It is without a doubt the best thing that could ever have happened to me in my career as a superintendent. Unless you’ve done it for yourself, you’ll never understand what I am talking about, but those of you who have been involved, surely do. For each of you who has yet to become involved, please remember these words when you possibly think about volunteering your time to the association. I promise you that you will never regret doing so. Now don’t get me wrong. It isn’t all a gimme putt. No. No. No. It is a lot of work, it is sometimes a hassle, it is difficult. Enough said. It is rewarding. Rewarding beyond belief. So when you feel you have the time to put forth the effort, try it for yourself and you’ll see. Thanks to all the terrific individuals on the Board during my term; you are each a pleasure to work with and I wish you all the best in the future. Keep up the good work. Thanks to each of you, the members of this fine association, for giving me the opportunity to lead and to learn. I only hope that I didn’t let you down. Last, but not least, thank you Kate Mason. Thank you for your unbelievable organizational skills. Thank you for keeping us all sane. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Thank you for all of your hard work, you are a godsend. Beck, P.E. There are many factors which govern irrigation management on a golf course. Understanding as many irrigation variables as possible is key in improving water management and efficiency for turfgrass irrigation. At the very foundation of irrigation management is the soil moisture reservoir. The soil moisture reservoir can be simply defined as the area within the soil profile which is available to store water. Although there are many terms and variables defining the soil moisture reservoir, it can be simplified with a very few terms and variables when relating to irrigation management. The reservoir can be related to a potted house plant. When the reservoir is full, after a rain or an irrigation, the soil moisture reservoir (or potted plant) is at field capacity. Any additional water added to the reservoir will either spill over the edge of the pot or force water to flush out the bottom. Permanent wilting point, for the purpose of this publication, will be a term used to define the soil moisture reservoir when there is effectively no water available in the soil for the plant.1 Shematic Diagram of the physical elements in a cubic foot of soil Figure #1 SPACE AVAILABLE TO STORE WATER COARSE TEXTURED SOIL FINE TEXTURED SOIL Reference #3. Fundementals of Geotechnical Analysis The difference between the permanent wilting point and field capacity is the soil moisture reservoir. This volume of water is highly variable based on the type of soil, type of plant, and the depth of the plant’s root zone. The size of the soil moisture reservoir is typically defined in inches per foot. Using our potted plant as an esample, assume we have a potted plant in a 12"x12"x12" square pot (see Figure #1). If we take a very large press and compress all tile water and air out of the soil it would make a solid block of soil particles or a rock. The void space pressed out of the soil profile would represent the area available to store water. If the soil is a sand, the solid block would be approsimately 12”x12"x11" or only 1 inch of void space is available for water storage in each foot of soil.2,3 If the pot contained clay, the block would compress to 12"x12"x9.7" or 2.3 inches of water is available in each fool of soil. The difference in soil moisture capacities between the coarse textured soils (sands) and fine textured soil (clays) is substantial. This difference can be attributed to the soil particle size distribution and the characteristics of soil structure between the individual soil particles. Most soils fall somewhere between 1 inch and 2.3 inches of water available to the plant for each foot of soil. Table #1 contains water reservoir capacities for different soil types. Experienced superintendents may be able to relate this to observations on your own golf course by remembering that turf grown on sandy soils usually needs water sooner than turf on silty or clay soils. Soil moisture reservoirs for various soil types Table #1 Soil Type Coarse (sand) Moderate Coarse (sandy loams) Medium (loams, silt loams) Mod. Fine (clay loams) Fine (clays) Available Water (in/ft) 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.2 2.3 Reference #2 Rochester, E.W. Landscape & Irrigation Design. The available water represented in Table #1 is for a one foot soil profile. Keep in mind that root zones for highly manicured turfgrasses are notoriously shallow. The shallow root zone typical for recreational turfgrass dramatically restricts the soil moisture reservoirs. In our previous example, we used a 12"x12"x12" block of soil to establish our soil moisture reservoir size. However, in most cases, turfgrass roots do not effectively draw water from the soil to a depth of 12 inches. With many turf cullivars, as heal stress increases root zone depth decreases so that effective root zones can be as small as 4 inches in depth during the peak irrigation season.4 Again, if a square pot is used to represent a turfgrass root zone, the turfgrass pot is 12"x12"x4" deep (See Figure #2). When the water and air is pressed out of this shallow soil block, a sandy soil has only about 0.3 inches available to hold water and only about 0.7 inch of water is available for the clay soil. Few soils are pure sand or pure clay and the actual soil moisture reservoir typically falls between these values (See Table # 2). A Patch o f G reen - 11 - W in te r Issue, 1 9 9 7 Schematic diagram of the physical elements in a 4 inch root zone Figure #2 Soil moisture reservoirs for various soil types using a 4 inch root zone Table #2 Soil Type Coarse (sand) Moderate Coarse (sandy loams) Medium (loams, silt loams) Mod. Fine (clay loams) Fine (clays) Available Water (in) 0.33 0.5 0.66 0.7 0.75 Table #2 dramatically illustrates the soil moisture restrictions which are placed on recreational turfgrasses. With peak turf water uses in Southeast Michigan approaching 0.25 inches per day5, sand greens will easily deplete the majority of soil moisture within one day and require nightly irrigation. Since turf will show water stress before reaching its permanent wilting point, many sand greens require midday sprinkling during the peak irrigation season to hold off excessive drought stress. By understanding soil moisture restrictions superintendents can identify areas which show early drought stress and manage irrigation accordingly. Although there can be several other causes of early drought stress on a golf course, shallow root zones and small water holding capacities may likely be the culprit. The key to managing the small soil moisture reservoir is frequent light irrigation By frequently replacing the depleted soil moisture reservoir, the soil moisture level can be maintained at a level optimum for the turf to thrive. Remember that once the small soil moisture reservoir is full, additional irrigation will not increase the amount of water available to the turfgrass. Additional irrigation will simply flush water through the root zone carrying valuable nutrients the extra water beyond the reach of the turf’s root system. By understanding the limitations of the soil moisture reservoir, superintendents can take steps to avoid excessive and wasteful irrigation practices.
