Around the turn of the century - the 20th century - along with the rest of the golf course, it was built among the many small farms in what was then a rural area but is now becoming a densely populated suburb of Detroit. Its construction is solid; thick block walls and oak joists supporting the hip roof. Over the last few years attempts have been made to refer to it as a maintenance "center", or maintenance "building", but it never really was able to shake its perception and with polite apologies to the GCSAA, it is still quite literally a barn. Not more than 10 feet from the river, it has endured incursions of the swollen river into its interior, in early September of my very first year working on a golf course, a prolonged storm sent the river over its restrictive banks and to record flood levels that inundated the golf course and filled the barn with nearly five feet of water. I can only picture what the inside of the darkened barn must have looked like: turf trucksters and greens mowers almost completely engulfed in the dark, motionless water. Only steering wheels, seat backs, hoods, and the tops of the tractors showed above the water line. Later, when the water receded, the slow, laborious cleanup began. Both the barn and the course were a mess. Debris from miles upstream was deposited on the golf course. Tree branches and dry-rotted driftwood caught and collected among the trunks of tree groupings. At the high-water ievel dead stream-bank vegetation wrapped around the trees to show the direction of the river current - five feet up the trunks in some of the valleys and hollows. Trash of all kinds - empty bottles, cans, cups, sticks, twigs, branches, and any litter that would float - in one continuous line of debris left behind on the turf to show the height of the flood level. Some of the greens had as much as a foot of sand covering their surface. A couple inches of greasy silt covered the floor of the barn. Every piece of equipment had to have all its fluids drained and changed. Water sat in all of the valleys on the course and a temporary routing of holes for the golfers had to be seen to. Small lakes and ponds remained in the low areas of the course, and while surrounded by the sour smell of rotting turf, pumps had to be set up and tended with fuel and oil. The high water had made it into the pump house and completely submerged the irrigation pumps and a portion of the controls. To me, as a rookie employee, the cleanup wasn’t only overwhelming, it was incomprehensible. For Gerry Kleino, the golf course superintendent, it was simply time to go to work. The river is not of the large or powerful variety. The Missouri, Columbia, Ohio, it is not. But its drainage patterns and course have impacted the thousands who live and work near it. It has determined many a community’s geography and infrastructure. Its significance as a watershed to Lake St. Clair is enormous. It also defines a golf course. Much of the course is river valley, the remainder wooded upland. Just as the flood waters were cresting, from an upstairs clubhouse window, you could survey the altered and foreign landscape. A glimpse of a post-glacial era, the river seeking and reclaiming all of its former boundries. I didn’t know it at the time, but working at the golf course provided me with more than just the groundwork for what later would become my career. For a somewhat sheltered and naive young man of 20, the work at the golf course and Gerry in particular forced me to look at my immediate world in ways I wasn’t accustomed. Many superintendents know at an early age that they want to pursue the profession and take steps toward their goal. My experience never fit that description. Like Gerry, I started working at the golf course, doing as I was told, going to college, being outdoors and enjoying the work, even taking some night classes in order to be able to stay at the golf course in the autumn. But all the while thinking that one day I would leave behind golf course work to begin a "real" job. Upon graduation from college, I did just that. But I ended up leaving that "real" job after less than six months. I realized my mistake. Gerry’s story is a little bit different. Although he too started as a laborer and attended college while returning to the golf course in the summers, he was around long enough, and thought very highly of by the ownership so that when it was time for the superintendent he worked for to retire, he was offered the position. To say that Gerry had a quiet personality would be greatly understating the matter. Difficult to read, most would say that he was hard to get to know. His calm, deliberate and thoughtful approach to life was in stark contrast to a high-paced, stress-filled world. To spend time with Gerry was to experience a drop in one’s own blood pressure. No problem seemed so urgent that it couldn’t be thought through and analyzed before being acted upon. Outside the barn, the river flows by for the most part silent, unhurried, changing its momentum, its depth, its course, only as dictated by varying obstacles and conditions. From the golf course, walk out onto one of the many bridges that span it. The grain and circular knots of the oak planking is raised in ridges, worn smooth from years of metal golf spikes. Stop near the center and look down into the current. If late-winter, it’s swollen and swift with snow melt. Its strength and force A Patch of Green - 7 - Winter Issue, 1998 undeniable. Not soundless. Swirling and mysterious, vortexing eddies flow by directly in front of you, beneath you, behind you, and disappear. The river moves on, unrelenting and tenacious. Its strength ever-increasing, its volume expanding. Unstoppable to the lake. The ownership of the golf course recognized and appreciated Gerry’s far-above average intelligence. They knew him to be loyal, solid, and dependable. When it was time to begin searching for a new superintendent, their search started and finished at the barn. When he was offered the position, Gerry had one semester’s worth of work left to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. But he already knew that an engineering career was not what he wanted. He accepted the superintendent’s job and never looked back. The golf course today is a testament to his ability to focus his detail-oriented mind to the many tasks at hand, and the rare ability to see things through - all the way. He took the problems presented to him, ordered them in terms of importance and priority, studied each individually, applied applicable mathematical formulas, ascertained budget allowances, double-checked solutions, and systematically went about tackling all of the projects in need of attention. In the quiet, unassuming, and methodical way that was very unique to himself, he put the golf course on a steady and stable path toward improvement. He completely overhauled the antiquated irrigation system - carrying out much of the planning and work in-house - replacing the original, single-row quick-coupling system with a modern double-row scheme. He engineered, relocated, and rebuilt a pump house. Gerry worked with civil engineers and city officials to properly route a highway bypass, designed and constructed through a portion of the golf course property. He rebuilt 70-year old bunkers, transplanted hundreds of trees onto the property, planned and executed extensive clubhouse renovations. And he maintained a golf course. I asked him many years later if he ever regretted not having finished his degree. It was after I had experienced my six-month, suit-and-tie stint, and was working at another golf course as an assistant superintendent. I remember that his words were incisive. And much out of character, he answered without hesitation: "Never. Not even for a second.” He then paused so that I might absorb his words. Bold. Eyes fiery. The news of his death washed over me like the flooded river of some 20 years ago. A sudden and unexpected passing, paralyzed by my own memories, struggling against the understanding. Not wanting to believe what I was being told. Trying desperately to come up with answers. Coming up with nothing. Coming up for air. Drowning. A month after hearing, I broke away early from my own job - a golf course superintendent now myself - and drove out to the golf course by the river. Mid-November and a windless calm, sun-filled and warm, blue sky day. Walking the golf course with my clubs over my shoulder, I took my time playing and revisited a time, recalled a place, remembered a man who changed my life: ...mowing green banks on a Turf Pro-84 and watching Gerry approach on his golf cart, shading his eyes with the bill of his black golf hat - emroidered with the club’s logo - as he drives toward me into the sharp morning sun, leaning with his right arm over the top of the steering wheel and left leg swinging back and forth off the side of the cart. Stopping, he hands me a styrofoam cup of coffee as I turn the key to silence the motor. The coffee steams when I remove the plastic lid, take a careful sip, trying to appreciate the taste of coffee not sweetened with too many sugar packets and smoothed with creamers. Thanking him, I think of his thoughtfulness in stopping by with the hot drink. We stand silently, facing the river and watching the misty haze drift with the current along the surface of the water. Drinking the coffee in small tastes, and standing - not uncomfortably - without the need for small talk. A few minutes pass in this manner before Gerry smiles, nods, replaces the lid an his cup, gets into his cart and drives away. Not having said a word to me. ... the spot where he taught me for the very first time how to mow a green with a triplex. One of the old Jake models with the bicycle handlebars and grips, small wheels, the vibrating sheet metal of the body that made a tinny racket when the throttle was increased, and the single hydraulic lever toward the center of the console that, when pushed forward, snaps my head back, hands fly from the handles, and feet lifted off the floorboard. Gerry laughing - having set me up. ...visiting him in the dead of winter. Driving slowly down the long driveway that follows the river, back to the barn, the snow pushed to the sides. Parted alongside of the barn out of the wind, the red Massey Ferguson outfitted with a back-blade and tire chains over the turf tires. Opening the door to the heated part of the barn, Gerry stands next to another tractor on jack stands, split in two to change a clutch. Near the work bench, I look out the window and see a fat squirrel sitting on the home-made feeder, hulls of cracked corn in the snow at the base of the oak. Thin wafers of ice cling to the river bank, an inch above the waterline. Strange not to be able to identify the landscape as a golf course, just a wooded field like any other in the drifted snow. After having been away for a few summers working at another golf course, wondering aloud, sheepishly, if he thinks he might be able to use some help come spring. Gerry knew the question was on its way before it was asked. Knew how hard it was for me. And allows himself no smile. ...early in the morning, the sun not yet up, the tops of the eastern trees brightening, pulling up to where the gang mowers were parked for the evening. Slowly backing the tractor into position to drop the hitch pin. Walk around the mowers. Toro Spartan fairway nine-gang. Check for air in 18 pneumatic tires, grasp and try to move all of the rollers for evident bearing slop. Push reels forward, from behind, with soles of my boot. Check to see if they’re too tight or too loose. Settle into the seat and the long cut to break-time, looking back over my shoulder and the heavy dew roostertailing with wet clippings. Easy to see where you’ve cut, Wet, uncomfortable feet until my boots dry with the heat of the tractor. The 17th hole, a par 5 flanked in hardwoods, parallels thd river on your left. It sweeps up and out of the river valley and onto a bluff. It then draws left toward the river and, still slightly uphill, until you are standing 150 yards out, looking across the river and back down onto the flood plain where the green sits. I approach the river and walk out onto the bridge, A Patch of Green - 8 - Winter Issue, 1998 Turfgrass Environmental Education Specialist Michigan State University Gregory T. Lyman Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program Announcement pausing, halfway across, one final time. Looking down, dry leaves neat by in the meandering current, and I see the bottom and side of the bridge mirrored in the dark, caramel-colored water, and just for an instant I catch a glimpse of myself, leaning carefully over the side to look down. Gerry was a man who, with no siblings, and the death of both of his parents at an early age, learned about life earlier than most. He was a man who kept to himself. Liked it that way. Although I never saw him happier then when he first spoke to me of his fiance’, he was still a solitary man. And had a solitary man’s dreams - his desire to hike the Appalachian Trail was not, to my knowledge, fulfilled. The golf course that he worked at all of his adult life was his life was about something altogether different. His could be found reflected in his character. It could be found reflected in his integrity, and his quiet sense of decency. I hope that part of his life is reflected in me. He was one of three superintendents whose opinion of my own work I valued highly. One of only three whose personal regard held high. One of three I admired. One I was proud to have as a friend. Beck, P.E. With the 1998 golf season now history, its time to start looking at 1999 and beyond. Many superintendents are evaluating their current irrigation technology and accessing the need to upgrade all or portions of their irrigation system. The basic technology in piping systems and sprinkler equipment has remained virtually unchanged for 25 years. Certainly this equipment has improved with newer materials and reliability and cost improves have occurred over time, but overall, a valve in head golf rotor and 2" PVC pipe is essentially unchanged over the past 25 years when compared to irrigation control systems over the same period. Irrigation control systems 25 years ago were electro-mechanical, essentially chicken house timers which simply activated irrigation or turned it off. Timers were maintenance intensive, sensitive to the elements, inaccurate, and had relatively short lives. Central controllers were a rarity. Over these last 25 years, golf course irrigation control has raced forward and drawn on the resources of personal computers to advance management. These computer central control systems have become very sophisticated and have required extensive training to fully utilize their resources. In most cases, central controllers of the past 5 to 10 years have been so complex that superintendents have been unable to dedicate the learning time required to maximize their operation. As a result, computer operation has been set up to be little more effective than their predecessors, the elector-mechanical clocks. Over the very recent past, computer control programs are utilizing the power of windows based operation and faster computer computation speeds to present user friendly operations. Complex control and manipulation of data is being handled by the computer itself and an easy graphical interface is provided to the superintendent. Complex sprinkler system operations can be performed with a few clicks of a mouse. These operations are presented to the superintendent in graphical format similar to other windows applications and in terminology common to the superintendent. As a result, with little training or irrigation background, superintendents can effectively manage their water resources. The most dramatic trend in computer control technology is the use of actual golf course layouts within the computer control program. An actual map of the golf course is generated and input into the computer central irrigation program. An as-built map or plan of the irrigation system is laid on top of the golf course map. Elements of the as-built plan are tied into the control system’s software database. The resulting map allows the superintendent to actually see the golf course and irrigation system on the computer as management decisions are made. Irrigation commands and programs can be constructed using the map symbols. If irrigation sprinklers have operated, are operating, or have failed to operate, the map shows symbols and colors to help the superintendent interpret these conditions. All technical decisions for limiting pipe flow rates, pump capacities, irrigation times, etc. are all automatically calculated. Obviously this technology is not cheap and requires extensive setup and preparation. However, the resulting program allows the superintendent to make better and more complicated water management decisions without extensive manipulation of the control software or irrigation hardware. As you visit the trade show this year in Orlando, visit the irrigation manufacturers’ booths and sit through a demonstration of the new control technology. Although this level of control is not for every one of today’s golf courses, computer control technology filters quickly throughout the industry and it is likely that over your career you will be required to use similar control programs. By understanding today’s cutting edge, you will be better prepared for your future work requirements and able to make educated decisions for irrigation upgrades at your golf course. This event is being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (new South Building) in Toronto, ON. The show runs from Thursday, March 4 to Sunday, March 7, 1999, which is different from the previous format of Saturday to Tuesday, so be sure to arrive early. The keynote speaker and festivities begin at 8 pm sharp on Thursday, March 4, 1999. The conference tradition began 50 years ago with the Royal Canadian Golf Association organizing the event. The CGSA took over in 1975 and it’s now reached the point where it’s a major event, with top international speakers and fellow superintendents from across the country sharing their experiences. This year there’s a bonus for conference attendees. The Toronto Golf & Travel Show is being held at the same time at the old north building of The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC). Its entrance is off Front Street. We’re using the new entrance off Bremner Boulevard, which faces Lake Ontario. The Program promises to be both interesting and exciting, starting with the pre-conference seminars scheduled on Thursday, March 4. We have John Kelly with "Drainage Principles"; Pat Differ with “Creating a Balance" and Gary Grigg with "Golf Course Construction Management and Grow-in" sharing their knowledge with you. Also, a special one-and-a-half day seminar has been selected lineup. "Irrigation Auditor Training" by Dennis McKernan will be presented on Thursday, March 4 and Friday, March 5, 1999. the pre-conference for Our keynote speaker, Peter Urs Bender is one of Canada’s most entertaining and dynamic business speakers. A Safe Way to Dispose of Unwanted Pesticides Gregory T. Lyman Turfgrass Environmental Education Specialist Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Have you got some yellow ooze starting to show through that old jug of stuff (who knows what it used to be) in the back of your pesticide closet? In a crowded room, rarely do you get anyone to raise their hand to that type of question. Having some pesticides hang around a grounds maintenance operation is not uncommon. What is uncommon is the ease with which you can now dispose of the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program at the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA). these products, thanks to • Greens & Fairway Grade Fertilizers with Nutralene® • Quality Polymer Coated SCU Fertilizers • Combination Products • Granular Insecticides & Fungicides l ee Time is a registered I rudernark ol I Iu: Andersons. Inheriting old products, changes in the scope of the business operation, label changes and new products emerging on the market are a few ways that pesticide products can become unwanted, fall out of favor and get pushed to the back of the storage room. Clean Sweep Program The MDA has been aggressively building a mechanism to move old, unusable or unwanted pesticides off your storage shelves and into the hands of disposal professionals. We have conducted several Clean Sweep projects in the past five years for the green industry, but the system just became even easier. The Groundwater Stewardship Program has been establishing permanent Clean Sweep disposal sites and recently announced that a total of 11 will be operating in 1998. Seven are currently available for your call and an additional four will be open in the early summer. The System this yourself. Program costs are covered by Now for the incredible news. There is no cost for those operations that are considered end users of the products. These include ground maintenance, golf courses, athletic fields, municipalities, and homeowners. Those who are in the business of selling pesticide application services will be charged a nominal cost: around $1.00 dollar per pound. This is a fraction of the cost if you tried to arrange the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program, a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and services provided by the local cooperators. This includes unknown pesticide products - those packages which have no label. To take advantage of this system, simply contact the site that is closest to your operation, let them know what you have, follow their packing and transport directions, make arrangements to drop them off at the site, and then drive away with a smile knowing the environment and the industry. that you have helped your company, In general, green industry operations don’t have large quantities of unusable or unwanted pesticide products hanging around in storage sheds. More commonly, small amounts of a few products accumulate over time. This project enables everyone to easily dispose of those few jugs of product that you just don’t plan to use any longer, or those that have a big drum of "stuff in the corner. Make it work for you. A tip of the hat is in order for the MDA and the Groundwater Stewardship Program for this proactive approach. Persons interested in participating in the Clean Sweep program should contact the site coordinator at the location nearest to them.
