We learn from our successes and our failures. Unfortunately, our failures lead to termination of employment. Failure by the superintendent to meet the owner’s or members’ expectation is a common occurrence, as well as personality conflicts . How many superintendents have been privileged to retire or advance to another position on their own accord? Over the years I’ve seen colleagues losing jobs without warning from management . Your confidence in this profession is understandably lowered. Your career goal should not give ^ management the options, but give us the options in this profession. Through the efforts GCSAA and their Professional Development Initiative (PDI), it will start the process of working toward this goal. It’s up to you and your input to make this endeavor a success. The PDI will be a self-analysis of your career, and what you have to do to achieve the goal. It will evaluate your strong points and your shortcomings for a job. The GCSAA will offer classes or advise on what classes to take. The goals of the PDI are to: - Increase salaries - Enhance job security - Intensify recognition as a key member of the golf course management team - Market credentials From October, 1999 to May, 2000, members of the Member Standard Research Group (MSRG) will visit GCSAA chapters to discuss the proposed classification and continuing education program. This time will be important because the MSGR will not be selling the project, but will be listening to the membership and collecting questions and concerns, so the PDI can be adjusted to what the membership needs. This off-season, take advantage of the GCSAA education opportunities - get online and give the GCSAA your views of PDI; they want to hear from us. I would like to congratulate Roy Szyndlar on his election to the presidency and to new board members Bob King, Dick Matthews and Terry Poley. Get Your Seed Tested at the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s Seed Testing Laboratory by Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, M.S.U. Dr. John N. Rogers, III and John A. Hardy into this The turfgrass industry has grown tremendously in the 1990’s, with new construction and renovation in almost every facet. In many areas, technology has expanded to support this growth and our management sehemes have more options than ever. One exception to this rule may be with seed quality, as seed industry regulations and intense competition have cut deeply industry’s profit margins. More recently, there have been stories of seed lots contaminated with weed seed with little to no notification from the seed label. Obviously, this is frustrating and quite costly, leaving you wondering where to turn. Our suggestion is to remember the basics and consider seed testing. The importance of a seed test can be equated to that of a soil test. A soil test at the beginning of any project saves both headaches and dollars down the road. The same goes for seed testing, because it too is inexpensive when compared to all the corrective measures that must be taken when a contaminated bag of seed has been planted. The purpose of this article is to make you aware of an independent service in Michigan to take your seed to before (and after) you make the seed application. This is the Michigan Department of Agriculture Seed Testing Laboratory, a state owned and run lab, on the south side of the Michigan State University campus. This lab, and the full-time staff of five people, is fully equipped to analyze turfgrass seed to detect and identify most contamination issues. They have the ability to perform both purity and germination tests. Steve McGuire, who is assisted by David Johnston, heads the lab. Both are certified seed testing anajysts. Interested persons should contact the lab at 517-337-5084 for prices, turnaround times and special test requests. For the next two years the lab will be located at the MSU Field Research Lab (while renovations are being made to their existing building), but will still be open for business. There are several reasons for independently testing seed. One of the most important tests for contaminants is for common and noxious weeds, which, if present in turf seed lots, can pose a long-term and expensive management problem. Also, the seed test can establish germination percentages. This can be helpful if there are questions on seed age. Finally, you should always save 0.5 lb. of seed from each lot as insurance. This will provide a point of restitution should there be any issues. Plase consider using this important service in the future.
