A time when we can sit back, put our feet up and reflect on the events of the past golf season. Even now I'll bet a few of those memories bring your blood pressure up a few points and make your pulse quicken, but still nowhere near the levels when stress, frustration and anxiety occurred during the golf season. These are only a few of the many things that add up to a lot of wear and tear on the body and the spirit. That is why it is so important to take the time to rest and re-energize one's self. We should invest the time and resources necessary to better ourselves so that we can improve our lives. I will use the example of a flowerbed to illustrate my message. Many of us have a flowerbed or two that was planted in the fall with spring flowering bulbs. The process probably went something like this. First, we evaluated last year's flowerbed performance by noting what performed well and what did not. Then, we developed a plan for next year's flowerbed that may have included new colors or varieties to replace those that did not perform well. Next, we implemented the plan to renew or amend the flowerbed that probably included tilling the soil and adding compost or fertilizer to re-vitalize the soil. Finally, you planted the bulbs which at first appear to lie quietly in the soil. However, they are actually developing roots and growing, so that when the time is right they can burst upon the scene with a wonderful display of color, texture and fragrance that will have a positive influence on everyone who comes in contact with them. We can draw a lot of comparisons about our lives and careers from that newer bed scenario. First, we should look back and evaluate ourselves both personally and professionally. Chances are that everything did not go perfectly last year. Maybe there was an incident involving mis-communication, a pesky weed, turf disease, a little league game you missed because you thought that you couldn't get away from the job, or that perennial "banana ball" that plagues you on every tee shot. Instead of putting up with these problems, why not come up with a plan to remedy, or at least improve one or two of these things? Sign up for a seminar or class in communication, attend the MTF conference, give your employees more responsibility, recognize that the course will be there tomorrow but your child will not, take a golf lesson and make a point to play more often. The point that I am trying to make is that we need to prepare ourselves today to be better able to handle tomorrow. We all should evaluate ourselves, develop a plan for improvement and take the steps to improve it. Education, time and stress management, rest and relaxation are all keys to our well-being. Make the time to grow and develop your own roots so that the next time a problem or conflict occurs you can rise to the occasion and shine. Here's hoping that everyone has a successful "growing season" and has a safe and wonderful holiday. Members who failed to attend missed out on something special. Plum Hollow is a beautiful course with large trees, rolling terrain, smooth greens and a perfect clubhouse for dining. A succulent prime rib dinner was topped off with a seasonal apple tart covered with ice cream and glaze. The management and catering/food staff was very attentive and extremely helpful. We thank all of the Plum Hollow employees and the grounds crew for making our meeting a very pleasant experience. Golf winners were as follows: It's not just well built, it’s also well rounded. Meet the Steiner 525, the ultimate in performance and versatility. Constant four-wheel drive and a fully articu lated frame make the 525 downright agile, and Steiner craftsm anship makes it strong and reliable. But the Rotary Mower real beauty of the 525 is its ability to do the work of more than a dozen different single-purpose machines. In a few minutes, thanks to its "Quick- Hitch" attachments, you're ready Trencher to mow, move dirt and snow, edge, blow, chip, aerate and more. So, if you're ready for a tractor that's as well rounded as it is well built, have we got a Steiner for you. Reel Mower Financing available through Dealers Credit, Inc. Only 47 members played golf, only 38 had dinner, and of those only 28 voted for G.D.G.C.S.A. officers. We all realize that this business can be extremely demanding and sometimes volatile but we must maintain a strong association so that we have control over our job, not the job controlling us. Every successful association has committed members who make a conscious effort to participate and strengthen its core. Attending meetings, golfing, education, and just plain taking time out for yourself is a vital part of this association, the future of golf and maintaining overall good health. All of us need social time away from work. When I attend a meeting I come away feeling good about myself, my profession, and how important superintendents are to golf and life itself. I often learn new ideas just from riding in a cart with a fellow superintendent, or what the course we are playing has talking during dinner meetings. Many of these ideas help to make my job a little easier. Just being among other supers and friends makes it worthwhile. Our by-laws require that every member attend at least two meetings per year. Every member should be able to attend at least four meetings, especially when it involves voting for your G.D.G.C.S.A. officers and this association. to offer, or the future of Election results were as follows: Szyndlar, President 2001 McKinley, Vice President 2001 Murphy, Secretary/Treasurer 2001 Abbott - Director 3-year term Shreve - Director 3-year term Any member with suggestions or ideas for education topics, meeting agenda or social activities may call me at 810-786-9550. And to mirror the conditions on the golf courses, the staff at Bay Pointe did an outstanding job providing their facility for the food and entertainment portion of the event in grand style. To those who were able to participate in the day’s events, and to those who were considerate in supporting the "Big Event" through donations of money, prizes and time, the Board of Directors of the Greater Detroit Golf Course Superintendents Association wishes to extend its gratitude to you for your support in making this year’s event a great success. Executive Secretary Kate Mason reports that approximately $28,000.00 in proceeds was brought in from your support this year. The funds will be distributed, as decided by the GDGCSA Board of Directors, to Michigan Turf Foundation, Turfgrass scholarships and more. Special thanks are extended to the individuals on the greens committees at the host golf courses donated for the event this year. Your support of the "Big Event" helps to improve the quality of turf for all those involved in the turf industry in this area. Your approvals are greatly appreciated. Special thanks are also extended to Golf Course Superintendents Rick Murphy from Bay Pointe Golf Club, Fred Green from Dearborn Country Club, Ken DeBusscher from Wabeek Country Club, Ed Hock from Walnut Creek Country Club and Fritz McMullen from Forest Lake Country Club. These gentlemen and their maintenance personnel did an outstanding job of preparing their golf courses for the day. Thank you gentlemen and your staff members for the time and effort you put into making this day the success that it was. Great job! Congratulations Dave, er, ah, Ace for the "Big Event Shot of the Day". A special thank you to Dr. Kevin Frank, a new Assistant Professor and Extension Turf Specialist for Michigan State University. It was most gracious of you to allow us to put you on the spot during the dinner ceremonies to present yourself and your immediate goals for your assignment at good old M.S.U. We hope your future with M.S.U. will be a long and rewarding experience for you and we wish to welcome you to the State of Michigan and Michigan State University. (Continued on following page) A Patch of Green - 9 - Winter Issue, 2000 The Big Event (continued) Gratitude is also in order for the volunteers who gave an enormous amount of their time to make this event the success that it has become. If you have ever been involved in helping with the coordination of this event, you know the time and effort that is committed in making the day a success. Last but not least, the "Big Event" would be something less than the event it has become without the effort put forth by Executive Secretary Kate Mason. She keeps the committee in line and on target to make this event the enormous success that it has become. Thanks, Kate. UPCOMING MICHIGAN TURFGRASS EVENT for the 2001 "Big Event" Planning is already underway. Golf Course Superintendents will be contacted to host the event in the near future. Already a final review meeting has taken place with the committee and improvements are being considered. We hope to see you back next year and we appreciate your promotion of the "Big Event" with your members and customers. Make sure your turf is protected from summer stress, too. Professor, Michigan State University M. Vargas Jr. INTRODUCTION It won't be long now before cold temperatures, snow showers and active snow mold growth arrives on golf courses. In southern Michigan the two most common snow molds are pink snow mold, or Microdochium patch, caused by Microdochium nivale, and gray snow mold, or Typhuia blight, caused by Typhula incarnata. Microdochium patch can be a problem throughout the fall, especially during wet falls like we are having this year. In addition to rainfall, heavy morning fog is also ideal for the development of Microdochium patch. The disease appears as small cooper colored patches in the fall and as pink colored patches in the spring after snow melt. While many people associate this disease with cold temperatures, the ideal temperatures for the development of Microdochium patch are between 55 and 65 degree F. FALL AND SPRING OUTBREAKS OF MICRODOCHIUM PATCH Fall and spring out breaks of Microdochium patch should be treated with one of the following fungicides: Chipco 26GT, Vorlan, Curalan, Cleary's 3336, Fungo 50, Systec 1998, Bayleton, Banner, Rubigan, Eagle, or Fore. Fall outbreaks of the disease need to be treated when it first develops to minimize damage. Severe damage that manifests itself in the spring can often be attributed to the early fall growth. Fungicides applied late in the fall will not stop the damage that has already been caused by early activity. Remember that the same environmental conditions that exist in the fall will occur again in the spring. This will result in outbreaks of Microdochium patch in the spring, which can be very damaging to the turf. This disease outbreak will occur somewhere between the third week in May and the first week in June, as it has every year since I have been in Michigan. Many golf courses have suffered severe loss of turf because preventive fungicide applications were not made to control this disease. The basic problem seems to be that as the warm weather of summer approaches in May, many golf course superintendents forget about cool weather diseases like Microdochium patch and begin to think about summer disease like dollar spot, brown patch and summer patch. Don't let this happen to you! Remember, Microdochium patch can cause severe damage to the turf in the spring if preventive fungicides applications are not made. SNOW MOLD TREATMENTS FOR WINTER PROTECTION. Typhula blight only occurs under snow cover or other suitable covers such as tree leaves or desiccation covers. Because of the poor snow cover we have experienced over the past few years, Typhula blight has not been much of a problem. In spite of that, preventive fungicides still need to be applied every season because of the difficulty in predicting when large amounts of snow will occur. Over the past several years our studies have shown fungicide combinations to be the best way to manage the snow mold complex on greens. The best treatment for greens has been a three-way combination consisting of a half rate of a PCNB product, a full rate of Daconil Ultrex and a full rate of Chipco 26 GT. Because of the cost involved in treating fairways, PCNB products have been the product of choice. TIMING The snow mold fungicides should be applied after the last mowing is made, that way the fungicide will remain on the foliage throughout the winter. The last three years we have had warm falls and the turf has continued to grow into December. However, many people have a date in mind, like November 15, just before deer hunting trips. While this works well in years when cool falls occur, it does not work well during warmer falls. There have been no severe outbreaks of snow mold over the past three winters regardless of when fungicide applications were made because we have had minimal snow cover. However, one of these years a warm fall could occur, and if you put your last snow mold treatments on early and continue to mow, you will be mowing off the fungicide, leaving the new tissue unprotected. For maximum protection, time your applications after your final mowing event. A Patch of Green - 11 - Winter Issue, 2000 The new Rain BircPSwing Joint is changing the shape of golf. Reduce pressure losses by 50% with Rain Bird Swing Joints We didn't improve an age-old swing joint design by cutting corners. We did it by improving corners. Rain Bird Swing Joints feature an exclusive swept elbow design* that smoothes the sharp corners found in traditional swing joints. The result is an improved flow rate that saves money by allowing smaller diameter swing joints and a single-piece enlarging outlet to be used with many larger rotor heads. The design also improves structural integrity, reducing the costs associated with fatigue-related failures. Does it enhance your career or keep you informed of issues surrounding our profession? Or is it a medium in which you are able to voice your concerns, opinions or ideas within our profession? To be honest, for me it has been a professional group I belonged to because everyone else belonged, so why shouldn't I? Although it is great to belong to both the local and national associations, just being a member doesn't benefit anyone. To really benefit from what the association can offer I think it is important to become involved at some level. First, involvement creates more awareness about issues that the profession faces. Interaction with superintendents at association functions and meetings you wouldn't otherwise attend allows those issues to be discussed . Second, involvement also creates more networking. In any industry we are limited by our outlets for problem solving and receiving advice on issues; networking through involvement will increase this. Third, becoming involved in the association could help you become more organized. College athletes will tell you that their best semesters at school were during the season. Association functions, being a committee member or serving in an elected position promotes organization and time management. Fourth, when you become involved you are giving back to the members who have served before you. For me it, has been Gary Thommes, Steve Cook and Kevin Dushane. The members before me have given their time and energy to make possible what the association offers today. I have worked for these gentlemen during my career and part of my thanks to them is to become involved in the association. in involvement the association Member creates opportunities, whether it is networking organization, issue awareness in the industry or giving back to those who have served before you. It brings you closer to what role the association plays in the golf course industry. The more involved everyone is, the stronger the association becomes, resulting in more benefits for everyone.
