As I am writing this, I am filled with emotions that run the gamut from relief to regrets. I can remember when I was first approached to run for the board, which I respectfully declined, mostly I think from the apprehension and uncertainty of the job. That winter I thought more and more about being a member of the board of directors. What would it take in measures of time and energy? I started to ask a few questions, and I think more importantly, I started to pay closer attention to our meeting structure and other functions. I could do some of those things that contribute to the big picture. I could be the indian and take directions from the chief and I felt that I had something to offer. I also hoped to take the opportunity to network and really get to know more superintendents. Why not run for the board? The following summer when I again was asked to run I accepted and had it all figured out to serve the one term, do my job and leave. After I was elected to the board I remember being kidded by some friends that they would me calling me Mr. President in a few years, and me strongly denying it with the words “Like a snowball's chance in Hell". Not me, no way, its three years and I'm out of here. That was 1995 and it truly seems like yesterday, and obviously things have changed. As I look back on my years of service to the association, I am reminded of a few of the changes that have taken place during that time in our association and also with me. Our association changed names and my hair changed colors. Our association is now better organized and more efficient and my scalp now has less wind resistance and more solar panel area. Our membership rolls have expanded, as has my waistline. I use to perceive myself as one of the younger members. But somewhere along the way I became one of the elder members. I went from being one of the indians to becoming the chief. I have learned and gained a lot from our association and I hope that I gave a portion of it back. I would like to thank the membership for allowing me the honor of serving as your president. Thanks to all the members of the board and the executive secretary for all their efforts in keeping everything together. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to have worked side by side with a great bunch of people. I guess it's true when they say that time flies when you're having fun. It seems that my tenure as president can be summed up in the words of Bob Seger. Please allow me the liberty one last time to use or misuse the lyrics of a song. "Here I am, on the road again." Meetings and appointments to attend to fulfill the duties of the office. "There I go, up on stage. There I go, playin' star again." I was given the opportunity to be in the limelight at several functions. "There I go, turn the page.'" My tenure is over and a new page will begin with your new president, Mark McKinley. Roehl by Paul Kolbe Peter J. Roehl, Owner of Maple Lane Golf Course and great supporter of the turfgrass industry passed away on October 8, 2001 from cancer. Pete was a member of the GDGCSA and the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation for numerous years. His grandfather, Major Roehl and father, Carl P. Roehl, were the original owners who established Maple Lane Golf Club in 1927. the superintendent profession in general. The 59 years of hosting our annual meeting, hosting the current Clarence Wolfrom Classic meeting, sending a yearly team to the Big Event and to The Invitational are only a few examples of his commitment to our industry. Pete was always supportive of our association and On September 26, 1986, the Roehl family donated funds to develop the Clarence H. Wolfrom Conference Room located in the Crop and Soil Science Building on the Michigan State University campus. Clarence Wolfrom was a superintendent for over 50 years and was instrumental in transforming the former farmland on the border of Sterling Heights and Warren into the present 54-hole golfing facility for the Roehl Family. Pete was a certified public accountant and a partner with the Doeren Mayhew and Co. accounting firm in Troy. He was a person who epitomized the philosophy of working hard, being proud of your work and enjoying the rewards of your work. Besides golf, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved his hunting dogs. He arranged annual fall pheasant and duck hunts on Pellee Island, which M.S.U.’s Dr.Vargas always started talking about by mid July. He was a member of Detroit Golf Club and served as president. There were many organizations that enjoyed the benefit of his services and camaraderie. This list includes his time as Director of Maplegrove Health Center, Director of Henry Ford Hospital, principal fundraiser for the Joseph Plonka Endowment Fund of Henry Ford Hospital, member of the Hundred Club (which helps the families of fallen firefighters and police officers) and a member of the Grosse Pointe Crises Club, which helps those in need. On October 17, 2001 the Michigan State Senate gave a special tribute in memory of Peter J. Roehl. Pete is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara, daughter Susan and her husband Grier, son Carl II, stepchildren Steven, Mark, Lori, and five step-children. Pete was a great friend to our industry and will be sorely missed. Vargas Jr. Professor, Michigan State University INTRODUCTION It is that time of year again when soon the snow will be falling. So that means it is snow mold time. In southern Michigan the two most common snow molds are pink mold, or Microdochium patch, caused by snow Microdochium nivale, and gray snow mold, or Typhula blight, caused by Typhula incarnata. Microdochium patch can be a problem throughout the fall, especially during wet falls like we are having this year. In addition, the heavy morning fog has also been ideal for the development of the disease. The disease appears as small copper colored patches in the fall and as pink colored patches in the spring after snow melt. While many people think of this disease as a really cold-weather disease, actually the ideal temperatures for the development of Microdochium patch are between 55 and 65 degrees F. FALL OUTBREAKS OF Fall and spring outbreaks of Microdochium patch should be treated with one of the following fungicides: Chipco 26 GT, Vorlan, Curalan Cleary’s 3336, Fungo 50, Systec 1998, Bayleton, Banner, Consyst, Spectro 90, Rubigan, Eagle, or Fore. If the disease is not treated when it first develops in the fall, it will continue to develop under the cover of snow, even if snow mold fungicides are applied late leads golf course superintendents to the wrong conclusion, that their late fall snow mold fungicide application was not effective in preventing snow mold development under the snow. However, the real cause of the problem was not treating the fall outbreak of the disease. the season. This often in the the greens. Some of WINTER CONTROL OF SNOW MOLD Preventive fungicide applications need to be made to the turf after the last mowing of the season. Three-way fungicide combinations are recommended for snow mold control on three-way combinations that have worked well in our fungicide trials are Daconil Ultrex-Chipco 26 GT at a full rate plus a rate of a PCNB product or Daconil Ultrex-Chipco 26 GT-Signature full rate, or Daconil Ultrex-Chipco 26 GT- Heritage at a full rate. Products like Cleary 3336 or Fungo 50 can be substituted in these combinations for Chipco 26 GT. Also, combination products like Consyst or Spectro 90 which are chlorothalonil-thiophanate-methyl products can be substituted for the DaconilUltrex-Chipco 26 GT in any of these combinations. Fairways are normally treated with a PCNB product because of the cost involved. SPRINGTIME CONTROL OF MICRODOCHIUM PATCH Remember that the same environmental conditions that exist in the fall will occur again in the spring. This will result in outbreaks of Microdochium patch in the spring, MICRO PATCH loss of turf because preventive which can be very damaging to the turf. Outbreaks of this disease will occur somewhere between the third week in May and the first week in June, as it has over the last 30 years in Michigan. Many golf courses have suffered severe fungicide applications were not made in the spring to control this disease. With the thought of summer approaching, it is hard to think about snow mold like Microdochium patch in May. Superintendents begin for controlling diseases like dollar spot, brown patch and summer patch, but forgetting about Microdochium patch can result in severe turf loss in the spring if preventive fungicide applications are not made. to plan TREATMENTS FOR WINTER SNOW MOLD PROTECTION Typhula blight only occurs under snow cover or other suitable covers, i.e. leaves or dessication covers. Because of the minimal amounts of lasting snow cover we have experienced over the past few years, Typhula blight has not been much of a problem. In spite of that, preventive fungicides still need to be applied every season because one never knows when the next winter with large amounts of snow will occur. Over the past several years our studies have shown fungicide combinations to be the best way to manage the snow mold complex on greens The best treatment for greens has been a three-way combination consisting of a half rate of a PCNB product, a full rate of Daconil Ultrex and a full rate of Chipco 26 GT. Because of the cost involved in treating fairways, PCNB products have been the product of choice. TIMING The snow mold fungicides should be applied after the last mowing is made, that way the fungicide will remain on the foliage throughout the winter. The last three years we have had warm falls and the turf has continued to grow into December. However, many people have a date in mind, like November 15, or just before they go deer hunting, to apply their late-season snow mold applications. While this worked well in years when cool falls occur, it does not work well during warmer falls. There have been no severe outbreaks of snow mold over the past three winters, regardless of when fungicide applications were made because we have had minimal snow cover. However, one of the these years a warm fall could occur, and If you put your last snow mold treatments on early and continue to mow, you will be mowing off the fungicide, leaving the new tissue unprotected. If a winter with heavy snowfall occurs, you could find yourself with a lot of snow mold damage when the snow melts in the spring. Members who failed to attend missed out on a fine day of golfing and an elegant dinner. Lochmoor is a course with large trees that line the fairways and require some accurate shotmaking. We were spoiled at dinner with a three-course meal of Filet Mignons and Salmon as the main course. The management and catering/food staff was very attentive and extremely helpful. We thank all of the Lochmoor employees, Mike Jones, his assistant and the grounds crew for making our meeting a very pleasant experience. Only 54 members played golf, and of those, only 33 were eligible to vote for G.D.G.C.S.A. officers. We all realize that this business can be extremely demanding and sometimes unstable but we must maintain a strong association. Every successful association has committed members who make a conscious effort to participate and strengthen these meetings so I can socialize, gain valuable education, meet other superintendents and have time away from work. We all need social outlets and the monthly meetings can provide some relief to a rather demanding profession. its core. On October 1, 2001, Golf Course Superintendents Rick Murphy of Bay Pointe Golf Club, Mike Edgerton of Meadowbrook Country Club, Paul Dushane of Knollwood Country Club and Don Knop of Great Lakes Country Club hosted the 36th annual Big Event at their golf courses. The day was perfect, the golf courses were in excellent shape and the event was, again, enormously successful. Appreciation goes out to these gentlemen, their staff members and to all of the individuals at the clubs who were instrumental in making this day the success that it was. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Jon Schreve. Jon had volunteered to be a host Superintendent, but due to circumstances beyond his control the players who had signed up to play at Lakelands Country Club were moved to other venues. Jon, his staff and the members of his club were disappointed that they were unable to host the event (due to a low number of requests to play there). Thanks to all of the host Superintendents for your loyalty and your efforts in making the 36th Big Event another in a long line of fundraisers to brag about. Once again, the food preparations by the Bay Pointe banquet staff was superb. Rick Murphy, please pass along the appreciation the Greater Detroit Golf Course Superintendents Association Board of Directors to these individuals for a job well done. The dinner was great. of the committee The Big Event Committee members who worked so hard to make the Big Event an enormous success deserve a lot of credit. Kate Mason, the Greater Detroit Golf Course Superintendents Association (GDGCSA) Executive Secretary is the driving force behind the scenes, making all of this possible. Kate makes sure that everything is in order, keeps tabs on any and all issues, and most importantly, she keeps everyone on It's a massive undertaking and she handles all of it, year in and year out, superbly. Thanks Kate. Special thanks also go out to Co-Chairman Rick Murphy for getting his golf course in shape for the event along with taking care of arrangements for food at all of the sites and for taking care of the microphone duties as this year’s emcee. Great job, Rick. The other hard working members of the committee included Mark McKinley, Sue Shockey, Ron Abbott, Dave Ashburn, Mike Bay, Jeff Fissette, Scott Ford, Tom Gill, John Gray, Tavis Horton, and Bill Jackson. Last year, Dave "Ace" Ashburn was the proud owner of the stroke of the day, an ace on the 16th hole at Bay Pointe G.C. This year, the stroke of the day goes to Mr. Robert Grutza who is a member at Lakelands Country Club. Here is the play-by- play of this outstanding stroke. During the banquet, after the golf was completed, the GDGCSA was collecting monies for a 50/50 raffle, half of which was designated to be donated to the New York Relief Fund to aid in the efforts taking place in New York to assist those who have been devastated by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. As the night wore on, the pot kept growing until it reached a level of approximately $3,400. Tickets were drawn at the conclusion of the ticket sales for the 50/50 raffle winners. If you were not present at the event or have not heard what happened, you may be wondering what this has to do with hitting a golf ball. It has nothing at all to do with that type of stroke. It was after the winners of the 50/50 raffle were announced that Mr. Grutza, a former fireman, asked to make an announcement. Bob proceeded to the podium, where he announced that he was going to match the GDGCSA donation with a personal check written in the amount of $1,700. Thus, the stroke of the day was struck with a pen this year, instead of a golf club. Awesome, Mr. Grutza, just awesome. Cheers and tears followed this announcement. We're going to have to work awfully hard to outdo this year’s event in the coming years. Already, work is underway the 2002 Big Event. Golf course superintendents have been contacted and Kate Mason is anxiously awaiting approvals to host the event next year. for Thank you one and all for your support of the Big Event this year. Hope to see you again next year. RESOURCE ISSUE Dear Superintendent Members, We trust you will find the following pages of this issue to be of great help to you in the next year.
