I’m not great at “small talk" and so I never looked forward to going to gatherings where I didn’t already know people. So I wasn’t exactly looking forward to attending my first meeting of the Michigan and Border Cities GCSA 12 years ago. But am I glad I did. First of all, golf course superintendents talk shop all the time so all the “small talk” was relevant. Second, I learned a couple of really useful things at my very first meeting. Third, and by far the most important, I began to build some of the most important friendships of my life. My first committee assignment after I joined was “beverage boy.” I was in charge of setting up the hospitality suite in the Michigan Room at GCSAA. Boy oh boy, those suitcases I hauled up the stairway were heavy. In fact, I met some of my favorite people icing down beer in the bathtub of the Michigan Room. As time went on, I got more and more involved and so I was truly honored 11 years ago when I was selected to serve on the board of what is now the Greater Detroit GCSA. As I write my final President’s Message, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president this year. It’s been a privilege to follow in the footsteps of my predecessors. Joining this association and becoming involved in its activities has been one of the most beneficial professional and personal things I’ve ever done. I know that many prospective and maybe even some less active members struggle with the thought of going to a meeting where they don’t know anybody. All I can say to you, based on my own experience, is the struggle is worth it. So let me be the first to invite you to the “Superintendents Only” meeting at Forest Lake Country Club on December 4th and the Holiday Party on December 6th a the Greektown Casino. These events are my favorites because everyone has something to talk about.. I’m sure we’ll all have some anecdotes to share about how tough the past season was. The purpose of our organization as stated in our constitution is... “to unite the golf course superintendents of the Detroit Metropolitan area into a cooperative group for the collection, preservation and dissemination of scientific and practical knowledge and information. In other words, we exist to make one another better in our chosen profession. I know my membership in this association has made me a better golf course superintendent. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to give something back to this great group of people. Special thanks to Chantell Horton for again helping us with the new scoring system. Plans are already being made to run next year’s event. We hope to add some diversity and excitement to continue the fundraising tradition we have enjoyed in past years. A much appreciated thank you again to all the vendors, players, committee members, clubhouse staff and all those who supported our efforts this fall. Monday, October 7 started out as a typical, cold fall day, a bit unusual considering the past summer season we’ve had. But things soon heated up with the start of our 37th annual BIG EVENT. Host superintendents for this year’s event were John Cooney of Tam O’Shanter Country Club, Mike Mulkey of Edgewood Country Club and Rick Murphy of Bay Pointe Golf Club. Special thanks to Dale Bauer of Burning Tree Golf & Country Club who had also volunteered to be a host, but due to a reduction in players, their course was not used. Based on conversations back at the Bay Pointe Dining Room, all the courses were in excellent shape and our appreciation goes out to all the staff members involved in preparing their courses for the event. Special thanks goes out to Rick Murphy and the Bay Pointe clubhouse/ banquet staff for a great dinner and bar service. The BIG EVENT Committee members who helped with this year’s event include Mike Fouty, Scott Ford, Tavis Horton, Mark McKinley, Carl Metzner, Sue Shockey, Rich Locke, Jeff Fiserte, Jim McLean, Scott Trbovich. Mike Bay, Al Goethe and Tim Johnson. The success of this fundraising event could not happen without the experienced effort from G.D.C.S A. Executive Secretary Kate Mason. Thank you very much, Kate. How could anyone pass this up? A chilly start to the day gave way to a sun drenched afternoon, complete with fast greens, rolling hills, fescue, bluegrass rough, deep bunkering and an all-around pleasant experience. The Old Course at Indianwood is a links style, Wilfreid Reed design that is very well maintained and a treasure to play and see. Our host and Golf Course Manager Brian Schweihofer, his Superintendents Aaron Mitzelfeld. Tom Ryder, their assistants, and the maintenance staff had the Old Course in tip-top shape and playing, tough after deciding to place the pins in the same location as the 1989 Women’s U.S. Open (too bad be didn’t put us at the women’s tees also). These challenging pin placements combined with the fast greens required accurate shot making and a seasoned putter. Many times if you missed the putt, your next putt was longer than the one you started with. Three puns were common and many gollers were satisfied with making bogey and probably overjoyed with par. This year’s meeting was very interesting and informative. Although many issues and programs were discussed, a good portion of the meetings centered around the implementation of PDI, the proposed dues increase, the candidates for office and the possibility of moving GCSAA Headquarters from Lawrence to another city. The following is a synopsis of the two and one-half days of presentations. A packet with more detailed information will be distributed at the Forest Lake meeting on December 4th. If you cannot attend this meeting and would like an information packet, contact Kate Mason and one will be mailed to you. In addition, all the information presented at the delegates’ meeting is being made available on GCSAA’s web site. GCSAA Financial Discussion This presentation centered on the need for a dues increase. The main points for a dues increase were: • GCSAA has been operating at less than break-even for the last two years. • The Future Program Accrual Account has absorbed those losses. • Loss of income from investments. • The tenant that was leasing the second floor of Headquarters went out of business shortly after 9/11. No current • Past history has shown that a 20% increase has been the norm and done on the average of every five years. Last leasing prospects available in the short term. increase was in Fiscal Year 97-98. • PDI is not directly related to proposed dues increase Professional Development Initiative (PDI) • Official date of implementation: July 1,2003 • The first renewal cycle for everyone (except CGCS) will be prorated • Selection process will occur in May, 2003 • Randomly select members to determine which cycle they will be placed 3 year = 3 points (min. of 1.2 must be education points) 4 year = 4 points (min. of 1.6 must be education points) 5 year = 5 points (min. of 2.0 must be education points) • PDI Pilot project: Nov. 1, 2002 - April 15, 2003 Purpose: preparation for processing all necessary paperwork for various scenarios that could occur when the additional Class A standards are required. Measures of Success for Pilot Project: "Resolve systematic or policy issues for implementation "Identify processing time requirements "Define internal staff responsibilities "Identify the organizational reporting mechanisms "Members of the Chapter Relations and Membership committees will serve as “actors” for the Pilot Project "These individuals will be provided with case scenarios and asked to complete various processes • PDI and Education Goal is to provide accessible and affordable education through: "Local Chapters "E-Learning opportunities "External educational opportunities This is just an overview of the key points for the implementation of PDI. To get more detailed information or have questions answered visit the GCSAA website at www.acsaa.org or contact me or a board member and we will do our best to answer any questions or concerns that you may have regarding PDI. Although this is not a new topic, not many people were aware that a move was being considered. It was revealed that a resource group that was made up of member superintendents was put in place 10 months ago to determine the feasibility of a move. In addition, a consultant has been hired to help facilitate this process. The primary criteria for considering a move is: • Long-term benefits to the members • Long-term growth and positioning of the association Included in our packet were the following statements relating to the primary criteria for a change in location. The leadership of GCSAA believes today that to maximize the visibility of the association in the golf community, to continue to broaden the scope of membership services, and to continue to solidify its leadership role in golf requires a re-examination of the benefits to the membership of moving GCSAA to a high-traffic, golf intensive region. A higher association profile has tangible benefits in expanded member services and serves to elevate the awareness and understanding of the role of the golf course superintendent. Any relocation must bring long-term financial and growth benefits to the association and its members The criteria that has been established for the "ideal location” is accessibility, climate and strategic partnership. Included in our packet were the following statements relating to the “ideal location”. A strategically positioned headquarters is one that facilitates high accessibility for constituents, most importantly members. Enhances the ability of the association to conduct business in terms of more direct interaction with the leaders of the game and more flexibility to conduct events that require outdoor venues, including research. The feedback from the delegates was mostly positive and the overwhelming majority felt that a move should be considered. Because of the positive feedback from the delegates, the board felt that in order to move forward with this and have the most flexibility and leverage to negotiate a deal we should consider amending the Articles of Incorporation by eliminating Lawrence, Kansas as the primary place of business for GCSAA. What does this mean? Under the current language in the articles of incorporation, because Lawrence Kansas is the primary place of business of GCSAA, any deal negotiated would have to be approved by a 2/3 vote of the membership. Traditionally, all voting matters are handled at the annual meeting. Under this scenario, a deal could be negotiated in July and the prospective city could have to wait for 6 or 7 months for an answer. The board feels that this could hinder them in making a timely deal. At this year’s annual meeting in Atlanta, we will be asked to vote on a change in the articles of incorporation to remove Lawrence, Kansas as the primary place of business for GCSAA. This means that a yes vote will empower this board or future boards to make a deal with a prospective city without coming back to the membership for a vote. The board has promised to present the details of any potential deal in a concise, timely manner; however, if we vote yes to amend the articles of incorporation we are essentially approving a move at that time and we are trusting that the board and senior staff at GCSAA will be acting in our best interest as an association. There is a lot of speculation that Florida is the targeted site but according to the board and Steve Mona, no location has been targeted and Lawrence, Kansas is still considered a viable location. There are several cities that meet the criteria and the next phase is to start targeting some of those areas. Steve Mona also mentioned the possibility of getting a better deal from Lawrence to stay put. A Patch of Green - 13 - Winter Issue, 2002 Candidates for GCSAA Office As with past elections, the candidates for President and Vice-President are running unopposed. Both candidates for Secretary/Treasurer are at the end of their terms for Director. The loser of the election for Secretary/Treasurer will more than likely be nominated from the floor for another Directors term. There are three Director positions available. The slate of candidates is: For President: Jon D. Maddern, CGCS Elk Ridge Golf Club Atlanta, Michigan For Vice-President: Mark J. Woodward, CGCS Dobson Ranch/Riverview Golf Courses Mesa, Arizona For Secretary/Treasurer: Robert J. Maibusch, CGCS, MG Hinsdale Golf Club Clarendon Hills, Illinois Timothy T. O’Neill, CGCS Country Club of Darien Darien, Connecticut For Director: Gary K. Carls, CGCS Sunnyvale and Sunken Gardens Golf Courses Sunnyvale, California Ricky D. Heine, CGCS The Golf Club at Star Ranch Austin, Texas Mark D. Kuhns, CGCS Baltusrol Golf Club Springfield, New Jersey Other Items of Importance • Compensation and Benefits Survey will be sent out in January 2003. This year you will be able to complete the survey online. Results will be sent out in May 2003. • At this year’s conference and show on Thursday, February 13th the Trade Show Floor will be open to members only. • There was a presentation made on the Board of Directors travel policy because of the backlash of the Ryder Cup trip. The delegates were satisfied with the information provided. If you would like detail on this policy, contact me or any board member and it will be provided. • GCSAA is negotiating with the National Golf Course Owners Association in an attempt to combine our trade shows. The goal is to have two separate conferences going on at the same time with their own identities but have a joint trade show. There was a lot of information given out in two and one-half days and it would be difficult for me to write an article that contained all of the information that was presented. Please plan to attend the Forest Lake meeting on December 4th where a presentation will be made and the topics will be discussed in detail. If you have questions or concerns regarding GCSAA, feel free to contact me and I will do my best to get you the information that you need. The Beards have provided a gift of stock, valued at approximately $100,000, to establish the James B. and Harriet Beard Endowed Graduate Fellowship at MSU. Once fully funded, this endowment will provide graduate fellowships for doctoral candidates conducting research in the fields of turfgrass science and management. “This endowment serves as a tribute to both James and Harriet for their many years of dedication and hard work in turfgrass science and management,” said Doug Buhier, Chair of the MSU Dept, of Crop and Soil Sciences. “The students who benefit from this fellowship will carry on their legacy of in-depth study and exhaustive investigation.” Dr. Beard’s influence within the turfgrass industry is the product of his extensive research as a professor in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at MSU, from 1961 to 1975, and at Texas A & M University, where he was a professor from 1975 to 1992. He has been Professor Emeritus of the Turfgrass Science Dept at Texas A&M since 1993. With Harriet Beard’s support, Jim Beard produced hundreds of scientific papers and three of the most definitive texts in the field of turfgrass science and management. Through his organization of the First International Turfgrass Conference in 1969, he extended turfgrass science to the world. His influence continues today as president and chief scientist of the International Sports Turf Institute. A committee has been established to solicit donations for the James B. and Harriet Beard Endowed Graduate Fellowship, with a goal of raising $350,000 to fully fund the endowment. Information on contributing to this fund is available by contacting Josh Merchant, MSU Development, at (517) 355-1217 or by email at mercha32@msu.edu, or Kay Patrick, Michigan Turfgrass Foundation, at (517) 321-1660 or by email at mtfturf amsn.com.
