THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE GREATER DETROIT GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION IMER, 2003 & c s a £, Your golfers could probably care less. But you should know that no tri-plex greens mower performs quite like our new 2500A. A patented off-set cutting design eliminates "tri-plex" ring and gives your operators excellent visibility to the cutting units. We've also put in a new radiator system with stronger cross flow tubes to increase cooling performance. An enhanced lift/lower assembly increases the response to lifting and lowering reels. A new in-tank fuel pump allows for more reliable fuel delivery to the carburetor. And a new seat increases operator comfort and reliability. For as long as I have been on the Board of Directors, and I'm sure it precedes my joining, it's been a challenge getting superintendent members to run for office. Between Past President Mark McKinley and myself, we approached over twenty superintendents who we thought would make good candidates to seek nomination. Of those twenty-some requests we convinced four men to run for the three positions. In recent years we sometimes were only able to get just enough candidates to fill the open positions. The Board would like to give the membership a choice in our annual elections, but putting together a full slate of candidates is becoming very difficult. The first time ! was asked to run for the Board I declined. My reason for not running was that my daughters were still in school and any spare time I had was devoted to them. I love my daughters dearly and enjoy spending quality time with them, but the truth be told, the real reason I chose not to run was that I was a little intimidated by the idea of serving on the Board. I had served on the Education and Golf Day Committees prior to being asked to run for election, so I was somewhat familiar with how those aspects of the association worked, but wasn't sure I possessed the qualities needed to be a good Board member. When asked to run the second time, I agreed partly because I was a little more confident of my managerial skills but primarily it was because I felt I had an obligation to give something back to the association. I had enjoyed the benefits of the hard work of Board members for years and I thought it's time I did my part to contribute to my local chapter. These past few years I have spent as a member of the Board have been some of the most rewarding of my career. It's been an honor to work with people who are dedicated to serving our profession and are willing to give a little of their time to help our association. There is a resource, which up to this point we have not utilized to it's full potential. That resource would be the Affiliate. Some of our membership's hardest working and most dedicated people are our vendors. Having served on committees with them I can honestly say they pull their own weight and then some. I believe the time has come to consider nominating an Affiliate to the Board of Directors. Our bylaws, as currently written, allow for Affiliate members to serve on the Board as long as a majority of the entire Board is GCSAA Class A or SM members. If this requires a bylaw change to allow Affiliates to vote at the Board level, I would support such a change. At a time when we are searching for individuals to participate on our Board, I believe it's in our best interests to utilize one of our untapped assets, the Affiliate member. The Golden Fox was in great shape and proved to be very challenging. Eric Niemur C.G.C.S., Director of Golf, and his staff should feel proud of themselves as everyone spoke very highly of the great golf course conditions. Eric is in his fourteenth season at Fox Hills, and has been Director of Golf for the last two years. In 2002, Fox Hills was voted Golf Course of the year by both the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association, and the National Golf Course Owners Association.
