A record-breaking attendance of more than 5,000 persons is expected. Conference Season’s Greetings from the Editor and Publisher WARNING! Beware of Winter Damage Winter is here and we should all be aware of the three dangers that our grass is exposed to during the winter. 1. 1 Desiccation - This is simply the drying out of the grass to the point where the grass dies. Desiccation is especially bad during open winters. The Southeast portion of Michigan is very vulnerable because of the small amounts of snow. greens exposed to wind, sandy soil mixes and thatchy greens with poor root systems are most likely to suffer. High You can help prevent this problem by covering the greens with thermal blankets - heavy topdressing or with brush. Some Superintendents circle the green with snow fence to help catch the snow on the greens. 2. Direct low temperature kill. This is most often associated with com pacted soils, poorly drained sites or low areas where the plants are sub in water followed by a hard merged freeze. This causes the crowns to become hydrated and then frozen. this situation occurs, you have to drain the standing water off the it freezes. Provide turf before When underdrains where possible. If ice should form and remain for thirty days you should become con the ice. } cerned and Punch holes in it - break it up - try melting it with black materials. to remove try 3. Ice sheet damage over unfrozen soil. When this happens, there is an odor similar to sewer gas associated with the melting process. The grass is killed from the inhibition of gas exchange and the build up of toxic chemicals and gases in the root zone and crown areas. Again - try to punch holes in the ice and cause the ice to melt. Begin this practice no later than 30 days ) after the ice forms. If you wait 60 1 days, you will lose at least half your grass and if the ice should stay for 90 days you probably will lose all of your grass.
