G C SA A Team Wins International Tourney While attending the Second British Turf Symposium October 5 in London, a team representing the Golf Course Superintendents of America (GCSAA) finished first in the Second International Greenkeepers and Superintendents Golf Tournament. A s s o c i a t i o n Team members were Palmer Maples team captain, Decatur, Ga.; Jr., Charles H. Fatum Jr., Stamford, Conn.; George W. Prieskorn, Brighton, Mich.; and Thomas C. Hamilton, Dallas, Texas. The GCSAA team scored an 89 in the three ball better ball, 36-hole tournament, played October 6 at the Walton Heath Golf Club in the South London suburb of Walton Heath and Epsom Surrey. Second place was won by the Republic of Ireland with a score of 81, followed by the Canadian team with 80. Others countries compet ing in the tournament were Scotland, England, Wales, Belgium, Europe and Northern Ireland. 8 The basis of the competition was the Stableford system, based on a point scale: the best team member’ s score for each hole was given one point for a bogie, two for par, three for a birdie, four for an eagle and five for a double eagle, with the greatest number of points winning. A four-month drought followed by just before the six weeks of rain tournament made for some unusual course conditions at Walton Heath. Grass was sparse in some areas because of the earlier lack of rain, while in other areas heather grew two to six inches high as a result of recent rains. Maples said, “ On some holes, the heather made play difficult for our team members, but the greens, although softer than what we are used to, were easier to play. We played excellent team golf, though, and everyone had a birdie on at least one hole.” Continued on Page 14 1977 GCSAA Golf Tournament to be held in California The 1977 GCSAA Golf Tournament will be played on the magnificent Monterey Peninsula in California on Feb. 3 and 4, immediately before the Portland Conference and Show.
