Try regular agricultural lime on fairy ring. I has a bad fairy ring on the 9th green which was cleared up within a week by following Bill’s suggestion. I hope you enjoyed our joint meeting here at Waccubuc on August 25th as much as I did. I look forward to another meeting here sometime in the future. Sincerely, A1 Moore Superintendent, WCC October, 1981 Dear MGCSA Member: “ It’s That Time Again’’ The time of year is here whereas the Reaching Out Com mittee are soliciting your help again for the unfortunate in our community. There was a meeting of the Committee on October 6, 1981 and it was decided that we should run this article through the Tee to Green again as a reminder to all of our members. We are looking forward to hearing from you, praying that you will take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to check those closets, basements, attics, etc. Our campaign last year consisted of toys for toddlers. This year we are asking for the same, but not limited to toys. We will accept clothing in good condition and other small items such as typewriters, record players, games, etc. Last but not least, monetary gifts. You may call anyone of the Committee Members nearest you for a pick-up. I would like to thank those Superintendents and their wives and friends for their donations: Jim Fulwider, Orlando Castarello, G. Mullane, S.M. Kotowicz, J.H. Musto, W. Carriere, N.M. Gagliardi, R. Morhardt, C. Wistrand, Steve Cadenelli, Terrance Boles, and all of the committee members. Please make someone else’s holiday season a little brighter this year. FERTILIZER SEED CHEMICAL CONTROLS OF SNOW MOLDS Richard W. Smiley, Cornell University The time has arrived when we must once again consider protecting high-value turfgrasses from the ravages of winter diseases. Typhula blight (gray snow mold) and Fusarium patch (pink snow mold) are the dominant winter diseases in New York. Experience has shown that these diseases often occur together, and the dominance of one over the other, at any one location or on a particular green or fairway, may shift dramatically from year to year. About three dozen control studies have been performed in the state during the past decade; the pertinent results of five such studies are pre sented below. Four of the tests reported here were conducted by my research group (primarily Melissa Craven Fowler), and one was by Dr. Daniel Marion’s group at the Community College of the Finger Lakes at Canandaigua. Snow Molds Near Buffalo and Utica Seventeen fungicide treatments were evaluated for control of Typhula blight and Fusarium patch on a ‘Penncross’ bentgrass and annual bluegrass tee at the Brookfield Country Club, Clarence, and on a ‘Penncross’ bentgrass nursery at the Higby Hills Country Club, New Hartford. Fungicides were applied on November 10-13, 1978 to 3 x 12' areas of turf, with a self-powered boom sprayer which delivered 5 gallons/ 1000 ft2 at 80 psi. At Clarence and New Hartford, snow covered the plots for 71 or 90 days, respectively. Considerable winter desiccation damage occurred prior to the first persis tent snow cover at New Hartford, and was evaluated in the spring as a color rating. About 80% of the disease at Clarence was Typhula blight, and 20%, Fusarium patch. Chemicals which controlled Typhula blight at this site included Daconil 2787, Chipco 26019, Bayleton, Cadminate and Caddy. All compounds con trolled the light incidence of Fusarium patch. Typhula blight was the only disease on the plot at New Hartford, although Fusarium patch occurred elsewhere on the golf course. Cadminate, Caddy, Daconil 2787 and Bayleton best con trolled Typhula blight in this plot. Fungicides were applied on November 17, 1979 to 3 x 18' areas with a selfpropelled boom sprayer which delivered 5 gallons of suspen sion per 1000 ft2 at 80 psi. Snow covered the plot intermit tently during December and January, and totally for 53 days in February and March. Assessments of disease were made on April 2nd. Most fungicides provided satisfactory disease control at the We’ll H an « LA R C E R H site, due in part to the moderate level of Typhula blight. The results are summarized below. Other tank mixes were also tested, but are not reported if any one of the components, at the same rate, provided control by itself. Excellent disease control was achieved with high rates of Daconil, Chipco 26019, Caddy and the thiram-containing fungicides Bromosan and Spotrete. Lower rates of Daconil were effective only if the sticker Exhalt 800 was combined as a tank mix. Selected treatments are listed below. The percentage of diseases turf area was assessed on April 25, 1978. Winter diseases are typically severe in the Adirondack Mountain region. Fusarium patch was the predominant problem on this green although Typhula blight was present in very small amounts, as well as in larger amounts in other area of the golf course.
