  PETER DELIUS is Associate Professor of History at the University of the
  Witwatersrand. His many writings on Transvaal history include The Land

 BILL FREUND is the Professor of Economic History at the University of Natal,
 Durban and has written Die Making of Contemporary Africa.
 RICHARD LEVINE is a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of the Wit-
 watersrand.
 FRANCIE LUND is a senior researcher at the Centre for Social and Develop-
 ment Studies, University of Natal, Durban.
 ALASTAIR MACINTOSH is attached to the Institute of Natural Resources,
 University of Natal, Pielermaritzburg.
ANNE VAUGHAN is a researcher at the Institute of Social and Economic
Research, University of Durban-Westville.
JOHN WRIGHT is Associate Professor of History at the University of NataL
