  UTAFITlis a jOU11UU of the Fac1ilty of Arts and SOcial Sciences of the
  University of-Dar es Salaam, devoted to articles and research information on
  Tanzania and East Africa prinuuily, and on developments in,the Third World
  and els~whereingeneral.
          Our subject is to explain what takes place in our environment, why and
  how, the achi~vements and problems in various development efforts, and
  research insights into'possible problem~solvingalternatives.
          UTAFITI cuts across disciplinary boundaries and we would rather not be
  bound by the narrow confInes.of disci))li~. We thus have had articles on
 .tliemes and topics i~ geography, history, economics, technology, education de-
  yelQpment planningL social administration, .1it«rature, statistics, and ll:l~hto
 -mention only a few. People of different ideological stand-Points have ad
  occasion to argue out their positions and cases, and we do welcome such
  healthy debates. Naturally, thejournal has tended to lean towards the socialist
. line of approach, but even within that approacQ, there is no monolithic control
  of ideas and interpretations ..
    Infomation to Authors:
            Articles should be double spaced and not more than 5,000 words. In the.
     },ody of the text all para&raphs should. ~ indented by fiye, space~ and all
     quotations longer than 1Y:1lines,and not in continuous text should be indented
    ten spaces. Ouotations in continuous text should be in ~ouble quotation
      marks. Avoid more than three types of headjngs. Table, charts, graphs, and
      maps should be placed on separate pages and should preferablybe sent in original
      or camera-ready copy suitable for offset reproduction.
            AIfJootnotes and references shOuldbe numbered consecutivelythroushou1
    the article and placed at the end of the article. Presentation of notes and/or
    bibliography must be standardised as follows:

     are published after the decision of the Editonal Board, although the mclUSlon
     of ~y article does not'mdicate the Board's approval of the views expressed

     supplie4 to the author.
