Isabel Bilz : Spring Lake teacher and librarian, part 1
Isabel Bilz recalls her memories of family life in Spring Lake and Grand Haven during the early twentieth century. She offers a vivid description of the area and the progression of time through the Depression into post World War II years. Isabel was born in 1913 in the family home on Washington Street in Grand Haven. She gives a detailed description of the east side of town where her father owned and operated a grocery store. After high school, she worked for two years as a receptionist in the Ottawa County Courthouse and was able to save enough money for college. At Western Michigan University, she graduated with a degree in education in 1936 and went on to teach in Fruitport and Spring Lake. Isabel became the first librarian in the Spring Lake School System.
