The Boer Sisters : Grand Haven memories
Dave Seibold interviews the Boer sisters, Cornie and Ruth, of Spring Lake, Michigan about their memories of living in Grand Haven and the surrounding area. Their grandfather came to Holland, Michigan from the Netherlands with the first VanRaatle group. Their father, John Boer, owned a furniture store in Grand Haven and was a licensed mortician. The sisters recall their early years on Washington Avenue and the days when the family first acquired a telephone, radio, and electricity. Cornie became the first kindergarten teacher for Spring Lake Public Schools and also owned and operated the Spring Haven Farm, located at the northeast corner of Fruitport Road and M-104, where Tennessee Walking Horses were bred. She gives details about her teaching career and some of her students. Ruth's husband Elmore Hoek was a dentist in Grand Haven.
