The story of the year : 1961
This radio program includes excerpts from the original news stories that aired during the year. The program focuses on the murder investigation of Carol Gee, age eleven, and Margaret Chambers, age twelve, who were found shot dead in a Holland ravine in May 1961. A warrant for the arrest of sixteen-year-old James Scott Stephens of Saugatuck was quickly issued and a search for the teenager ensued. Stephens had left a note in the home of his step-father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kerb, telling of the accidental shooting and his plans to head west. He was soon captured hitch-hiking in South Dakota, was convicted of the murders and sentenced as an adult. He was to serve a term of no more than forty years.
