William Riddell, a doctoral student in the History Department at the University of Toronto, presents, "A leak in the ship of State : the Sailors' Union of the Pacific and the imperial labor politics of Pacific annexation, 1897-1900," a look into the development and organization of the Sailors' Union. Riddell examines the relationship between American expansion in the Pacific and the battle of the Sailors' Union of the Pacific to prevent the spread of "unfree labor" in the new territories and answers questions after his talk. He is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck.
