Turning out the lights in Janesville : autoworker lives in the wake of a plant closure
Dr. Sharon Kennedy, retired vice-president of Blackhawk Technical College and freelance writer, delivers a talk entitled "Turning Out the Lights in Janesville: Autoworker Lives in the Wake of a Plant Closure". Kennedy talks about the General Motors plant in Janesville and looks closely at general assembly workers and skilled trades employees who, after being laid off, had to return to school to learn new skills for new jobs outside of GM. Kennedy also describes the challenges faced by aging workers, their reluctance to return to school and how schools reached out. She answers questions from the audience. Kennedy is introduced by John Beck, professor of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series co-sponsored by the Lansing Stewardship Community/Motorcities - The Automobile National Heritage Area, the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum. Held in the MSU Museum Auditorium.
