Science and sonnets
Karah Smith, Melissa Klamer, and Salvatore Antonucci from the Digital Humanities and Literary Cognition Lab at Michigan State University, deliver a talk entitled "Science and sonnets," explaining where, how and why data is presented in graphic form. Smith discusses the creator's bias in decisions about the graphics to use and how the data is visualized, and uses numerous examples of data visualized in graphics. Antonucci explains a study looking at MRI imaging of the brain when people are reading poetry and other literature and engages the audience in an exercise to demonstrate the technique and charts the data produced. Klamer displays the results of other data from previous sonnet readings. They answer questions from the audience. The speakers are introduced by MSU Librarian Amanda Tickner for the Visualization community seminar speaker series.
