U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz announces the opening of formal relations between the Palestine Liberation Organization and the United States
Citing United Nations resolutions, George Shultz acknowledges Israel's right to exist in peace and security and renounces terrorism, and as a result announces the opening of formal relations between the Palestine Liberation Organization and the United States. He also names the U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia as the only authorized channel for the dialogue. He also clarifies that this action does not mean that the United States recognizes an independent Palestinian state and speaks about the U.S.'s desire for peace in the region and answers questions from reporters.
