Independent bookbinder and artist Karen Hanmer discusses her artist-made books as physical manifestations of personal essays which interweave history, culture, politics, science, and technology. Hanmer describes her studio practice as unusually varied and says that she includes design binding, small editions of artists' books, larger editions of inexpensive multiples, and installations. She presents an overview of her work followed by an opportunity for the audience to examine a few of her books held in the Michigan State University Libraries' Special Collections. Hanmer answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by MSU Librarian Eric Alstrom and is cosponsored by the MSU Residential College for the Arts and Humanities.
