Oral history interview with Kenichi Arita, 2015 August 5
Kenichi Arita was born in Akitsu, Hiroshima and graduated from the Hiroshima University School of Medicine in 1974. His father was a hibakusha. He worked at the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital and Atomic-bomb Survivors Hospital and was involved in giving medical check-ups to hibakusha in the U.S., South America, and Korea. He talks about his thoughts and experiences while treating U.S. and Korean hibakusha, including the different medical systems and issues with communication overseas hibakusha have with local doctors. He discusses issues surrounding collecting data on hibakusha, including its perceived value, and how different doctors and specialists regard the effects the bombing on hibakusha's health. He also talks about studying second-generation hibakusha and other issues concerning the treatment of hibaksha in order to improve their quality of life.
