Western Michigan at work. 1946-11-25
In this incomplete episode of "Western Michigan at work" Dr. Willis Dunbar takes a look at the Peter Pan bakery in Kalamazoo. He explains how company president Jack Schafer, despite struggling to get on his feet, paid the highest wages of any industry in Kalamazoo and eventually grew to include seven corporations across six different cities. Dunbar asserts that the continued success of Peter Pan bread lay not in its unique potato culture ingredient but in its advertising, claiming that a good part of its sales are to children that recognize and admire its branding. He elaborates on the entire bread making process that results in a production of eight loaves a minute. Jerry UnderKircher, the shipping manager, discusses how and where the bread is transported and bakers helper Berneice Vander Veen talks about her job in the plant and the various duties of a baker.
