Changing the narrative : refugees and social workers in Germany
Johanna Schuster-Craig, professor in the Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages at Michigan State University, delivers a talk entitled "Changing the narrative: refugees and social workers in Germany." Schuster-Craig discuses how the German government, especially Prime Minister Angela Merkel, reacted to the influx of refugees into Europe from 2015 to 2017 and the opportunity social workers now have to change the public's perception of refugees. She shows excerpts from German television to illustrate how Germans perceive refugee migration and how negative perceptions are obstacles which refugees must overcome to get jobs and succeed in Germany. Schuster-Craig also talks about her 2017 research on German social work programs and says that such programs can solve social problems by focusing on training, job counseling, and youth employment. She answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck from the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations.
