Western Michigan at work. 1951-03-09
In this episode of "Western Michigan at work," Dr. Willis Dunbar discusses the Valley City Milling Company in Portland, Michigan. He recounts that they were the fourth in the nation to make commercial feeds for livestock and date back to 1884 in Grand Rapids, Michigan where it stayed until the mill burnt down and moved to Portland. Dunbar details the variety of feeds they produce at the Mill, the elaborate process by which they are made, and how both the grains and finished product are safely stored. He invites the companies Vice President, Fred Rowe Jr., to explain how a scarcity of materials during the war paved the way to the rapid developments in poultry feed.
