Western Michigan at work. 1950-08-01
In this episode of "Western Michigan at work", Dr. Willis Dunbar discusses the pulp mill in Espanola, Ontario that supplies the Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment company. He claims that Espanola, once a desolate ghost town, is now a thriving and growing city today thanks to their business with KVP. After the war, he recalls, the Canadian government used the nearly abandoned town as an internment camp for prisoners of war. After much rebuilding and investment from KVP the city was able to produce up to 350 workings tons of pulp each day. Dunbar explains how the economic strength of Espanola comes from the five different plants that work together to make the final product. There is a bleached plant crack mill, newsprint establishment, paper-making plant, hydro-electric plant, and an electrolytic plant that manufactures most the chemicals needed in the process. Dunbar then describes, in great detail, the process of transporting lumber and turning it into pulp.
