Oral history interview with Elizabeth Pillar, 2003 July 28
Elizabeth Pillar discusses her service in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She talks about her motivation to join the corps and her preparation to join. Pilar recalls the segregation in the armed forces at the time and how she only saw one black nurse when she first arrived. She describes how hot and humid India was, the uniforms women wore in the war, and the general attitude towards women in the service. Pilar shares the time she thought she was in danger, when in reality it was just a party, and how she found her husband during the war. She recalls her Chinese patients, the low number of surgery related deaths, and the importance of talking to patients. Pilar claims that if she were that age again she would do it all over. Elizabeth Pillar is interviewed by Kathryn Cavanaugh.
