Western Michigan at work. 1949-01-25
In this episode of "Western Michigan at work" Dr. Willis Dunbar takes a look at the South Haven daily tribune. He explains that while South Haven is the smallest city in Michigan with its own newspaper, the Tribunes 3000 strong readership is actually more than the amount of homes inside the city. He shares the personal history of its current owner Dan Rooker and how despite his position, even he sometimes has to perform the duties of a newsboy or janitor. Dunbar tells how a large share of the editorial is dedicated to local problems and how the newspapers advocacy of various city improvements and referendums helped award it second place in a nation wide contest for best newspaper support and results. Wayne Fritz, a local paper boy, talks about his job and how he is saving his $5 weekly earnings for college. Business manager, Dan Rooker, discusses the newspapers annual farm, vacation and Christmas special editions.
