In this installment of "Western Michigan at work," program 111, Dr. Willis Dunbar talks about the Durametallic Corporation. He describes H.P. White devised a method of metallic engine packing in Kalamazoo under the name New Era Manufacturing Company, and after Charles C. Hall joined the company in 1917 and reorganized it in 1924, they adopted the name Durametallic Corporation. During the way they were not called on to change production, so they continued to meet the high demand of metallic seals and packings. Newer employee Lou Collins talks about his training course in the factory. Veteran and final assembly worker Dick O'Rourke talks about their safety record and how brightly colored machinery indicates various hazards and moving parts. Shipping clerk Leslie Bowsher who hasn't missed a day in 13 years, talks about an average day in shipping and what products are shipped out.
