"Let your hammer ring" : the legacy of prison labor in Black folk music
Folk singer and historian Jake Blount delivers a presentation titled "'Let your hammer ring': the legacy of prison labor in Black folk music". Jake points to Black culture, that originated at the point of the transatlantic slave trade, as the root of all of our nations largest musical exports. He shares a number of recordings that illustrate the ways these traditions, that started on slave ships, have continuously inspired musicians all the way up and into contemporary music. Jake Blount is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. This particular event is in cooperation with Ten Pound Fiddle.
