Oral history interview with Beth Mlynarek Kaufman, 2023 September 8
Beth Mlynarek Kaufman speaks about her experiences at Michigan State University as a baton twirler and one of the two first female members of the MSU Spartan Marching Band. Beth transferred to MSU from Western Michigan University in 1972 and obtained her B.A. in elementary education in 1975 and her M.A. in education in 1977. She shares how the passing of Title IX is what drew her to transfer to MSU and the opportunities it gave other women in sports. She details the challenges of being a woman in a male dominated group, and how some of the men protested and threatened to quit if women were allowed in the band. Beth reveals how after a short time, some of the men that originally ignored or protested her had become her friends. She describes her participation in the alumni marching and talks about some differences she's noticed in the band over the years. Beth is interviewed by her spouse Michael Kaufman who was also attending MSU when they began dating.
