U.S. President Barack Obama nominates General David Petraeus to take command of troops in Afghanistan
During a press conference in the White House Rose Garden, President Barack H. Obama announces that he has accepted the resignation of General Stanley McChrystal. Obama says he is nominating General David Petraeus to take command of troops in Afghanistan. The President declares that the Administration remains unified in its commitment to victory in Afghanistan and will continue to train and equip the Afghans to assume security duties in their country.
