President's Message In a discussion recently with a few other superintendents it was mentioned how many o f us do sim ilar projects and have very sim ilar duties and areas of responsibilities at the golf courses where we are employed. W e thought it would be a great time saver if we came up with a bulletin or hand out that would list the nondirect tu rf companies that we frequently use for our everyday operations. These would be listed under general titles i.e. electrical contractors, fence contractors, automotive suppliers etc. Possibly a short note behind the companies name listing what type of service they did for your business and your name would be helpful. Some may not need an explanation i.e. Joes Auto Electrical Service, just your name and the companies phone number. This sounded like a good idea to us. W hat's your opinion, and do you have any suggestions? If so please give me or a board member a call. W e welcome your ideas and its a chance to help your fellow association members. Thanks, Harry Schuemann W.M.G.C.S.A. 1994 GolfDay The Annual G olf Day for the W estern Michigan Superintendents Organization was held at Battle Creek Country Club this year. There was not an alternate course this year as in years past but this did not take away from the event at all. As you know the golf day is held with state turfgrass research dollars in mind and as in the past the proceeds were all donated to the M ichigan Turfgrass Foundation for on going research projects. This year a total of $7,000 was donated from the days activities. There was a morning and afternoon shotgun with a before golf snack and an after golf dinner for each group. The host club was very accommodating with the golf course in Editors Note: Please write me if you have any corrections or if you are interested in doing an article for us at: Western Views 1447 Hope S.E. Our compliments to the staff at Silver Lake Country Club in helping us make it a Great Day! Annual Fall Party The annual fell party is coming up fast! It looks as though it should be a good one. Steve Tedhams and many others have put a lot of time into everything from picking fee entertainment to selecting the evening’s entree. The party host is Spring Lake Country Club. The party will be held cm November 4th and if you haven’t received an invitation contact Steve Tedhams at 949-8330. See you there for an evening of fun and entertainment! W ESTERN VIEWS Mechanics Corner Gary Spahr C.G.C.S. at Cedar Chase G. C. had an interesting tip for us about the drive linkage cm the Jacobson LF 100’s that seem to wear out more frequently than desired. Gary has his crew lube the machine on other points as it’s called for in the service manual, but instead of the 30 weight oil that’s recommended in the manual they use a small squirt can o f the sprayable white lube grease cm the drive linkage each time the machine is washed off. Not enough to build up and collect dirt just enough to keep the linkage from binding up. He’s had good result’she has not replaçai a drive linkage all season! Amazing what kind of information you can pickup at a superintendent’s meeting.
